About the game :(
Wow I have loved Grigsby's games for a very long time and this one takes the cake on detail. It is truely a masterpiece of detailed historical recreation. Great detail, nice graphics, sound, love the map. I loved the 1st one they made years ago and played it many times. I loved War in Russia. Both at a perfect level of play. You didn't have to get into the nitty gritty of detail play to enjoy the game. Just set it on autodo and just play.
Too bad this new version is unplayable unless you have no life WHAT SO EVER!
There has to be a balance between detail and playability and this game is well beyond the red line. Its rediculous. I almost fell asleep waiting to make sure Captain Smith recorded his 2nd kill, while bailing out and being captured. I was expecting results from his interigation and where he would be placed in a POW camp so I can set orders for the prisoners to break out.
I set the turn to 3 days.
I played one turn of the tutorial and it took me 10 minutes with the graphics on and .1 speed.
I turned the graphics off and it took me 5 minutes a turn at .1 speed.
If you love monster games then I think this is it for you. But otherwise forget it. I think it will take as many weeks as the real war to play this monstrosity of a game. I wish I could get my money back.
Is there anyway to DUMB it down so I can play it as fast as the original? So maybe I can enjoy it like the past games?
How do you people find the time to play this game.

RE: About the game :(
The first few turns are the biggies...after that, it's mainly maintenance and the odd operation or two. Getting the machine rolling in the first few turns is a big undertaking. I'm detail oriented though so I love it.

1. Better to press the Done key (if animations temp on), sometimes ESC takes you past key results report.
2. Hit PF5 to start animations during Deliberate/Shock Ground attacks. Key info at the end of these attacks tells you the changes in assault values for your troops due to supply, terrain, leadership, fatigue, etc.
RE: About the game :(
Just wonder what sort of a computer is being used, on my old clunker a turn took 25-30 mins to run through, now its about 4 with a new machine ( 1.4 also really speeded it up for me)
Big seas, Fast ships, life tastes better with salt
RE: About the game :(
It is definitely a monster.
I have my hands full with just one PBEM. But, this makes the immersion level higher. Only 2 sides. It is a long war. Every day is important. You feel for the loss of every pilot, every ship. Especially when you are playing Japan. I usually spend 1-2 hours / turn, first turn was something like 10. I also find myself thinking about my strategy during driving to work, when bored, etc.
Its a very good game, strategy really matters. You can make your own strategy, then execute it. [&o]
Logistics is a nightmare though. Moving all those troops, managing escorts, repairs, upgrades, production, prep points, OMG. I could live with a little bit less detail.

And I watch every combat replay! Thats the fun part in my opininon.

I presume you don't use animations if you run thru a turn in 4 minutes [;)]ORIGINAL: herbieh

You understand what you're missing in Ground Combat (Deliberate/Shock) doing so, right?

i only watch the combat replays if there is a major beating of my enemy...that i know of [he starts complaining of me cheating in his email, hey enterprise just intercepted your CA tf nothing new]
the escalated quickly...
RE: About the game :(
You can skip what you don't want to see via F5, just there's a very useful bit of info in the message bar of animation Ground Combat only, at the end of ground combat (after all those BB messages), that tells you the computed (as opposed to unit displayed) assault value of you and your opponent's combined attack/defense force. This tells you how close you really are to winning/losing an attack on the ground. Very useful in China, and other major assaults (Clark Field, Singapore), because the # of troops there can be misleading (several divisions of 'paper' high assault strength may be reduced to nothing by lack of supply, support, fatigue, disruption, etc.). When you've completed examining all the ground attacks you care about, F5 to get thru the rest.ORIGINAL: janushm

Hi, I've been looking and looking for the feature that lets me put together a raiding force to raid a POW camp and break one of my pilots out. What screen lets you do that? Was that part of the latest upgrade?
You must beguile and confuse the enemy, disappearing and then reappearing at places and times inconvenient to him.
RE: where is the break prisoners out feature?
No, you can not do that. Have not even heard that idea tossed around.

What you need there is a fan based mod to link WiTP with MOH:Pacific Grunt! Mount POW rescue operations or assassination missions.

RE: About the game :(
I am new to WiiP, but not to wargames. Had original War in the Pacific board game from SPI back in late 70's. Have played a lot of HPS - Panzer Campaigns, especially.
Now for my questions. I am playing the South Pacific (May'42 to Feb'43) as the Japanese against the AI (a few times it has taken a large bite out of my Aircraft and CV's). [:@][:@] I have to ask about all the supply ships what is the difference or specific uses for AP, AK, AO, PC, etc. I know how to use warships, but these little guys ...[8|][8|] I have tried to form a Replenishment TF and have failed to re-fuel my large ships (DD's can transfer to TK/AO and back to original TF, but not large ships). What about using barges?? What do they really do??
I like the challenge of this game and its complexity. I will probably be playing this one for most of '05 and until I can beat the AI will not try a real human....[:D][:D]
Finally, if these types of questions have been addressed in another thread, please direct me too it. There needs to a thread that can be found easily about these types of questions that us "newbies" can find. Trust me, I'll be back with more ???

RE: About the game :(
Not hard to explain.
AP= are transport ships for troops
AK= are transport ships for supplies and Tanks or resources
TK= are tankers, they can carry fuel or Oil
AO= are tankers a bit more armed. Can carry oil or fuel
PC= are small escort boats
Barges= well, they're usefull to resupply the little islands with the CS convoy system, or to resupply bases that are in the front line of fire( usually the enemy planes do not care so much about barges, so you can deliver a small amount of supplies without high risks)
For the replenish TF i can suggest you to form a normal Transport TF with TK or AOs. Load fuel, then set to non-retire and "do not unload". It will act exaclty like a replenish TF but without the game limitations of this kind of TF
Hope that helps

RE: About the game :(
To break it down even further (rules of thumb for me anyway):
1. 3 sizes AP: 1500/3000/4500.
Use 1500 for quick landings where you expect enemy presence in air/sea. Less loss for you if any hit/sunk.
Use 3000 for medium risk landing, and 4500 for low risk landings. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule here (convenience, pressed for ships for key landings, etc.)
2. 2 sizes AK -- 3500/7000. Use sizing as appropriate to risk as described for AP above.
3. TK -- 9000/16000. Use 9000 for most refueling uses, loading Oil in 'hot' zones. 16000 for fuel between major fuel centers, or oil transport in safe zones.
4. PC/PG. For the Japanese anyway, the PC is more focused on Depth Charges, while the PG is more focused on Anti-Air. Use appropriately.
You can pretty much tell the usefulness of other auxiliary ships by noting their armament/speed for the task you have in mind. One special note, for ASW patrols APD/High Speed MSWs make good force, high experience helps as does good leadership.
Have fun!
