EUB vs Sprior - see who gets his banana straightened

Post by EUBanana »

It's Groundhog Day in the Pacific! The Japs strike Pearl Harbour yet again, only this time instead of Nimitz the poor Americans have me in command. heh heh heh...

With luck we should be doing a split AAR so I can pour out my heart here (and you lot can advise against my insane ideas too). The plan was no moving TFs that were not already at sea so not much happened on turn 1. Allied damage control is on, Jap sub doctrine is on, first turn surprise is on.

Not there is much to pour at the moment it being turn 1. Pearl Harbour gets Kido Butai'd and two BBs go down immediately, about the only unusual thing seems to be he's really going for Singapore in a big way. And he pays, as the Ise catches five stringbag launched torpedoes at Johore Baru. SNLF units (presumably) pop up all over New Guinea as well.

RE: EUB vs Sprior - see who gets his banana straightened

Post by EUBanana »

A high tempo of operations continues. The KB is sticking around at Pearl - wise on his part, there are perhaps 12 operational aircraft at the naval base and morale is too low for them to do anything but cower. At the end of a devastating day at Pearl 5 US BBs are in the Jap bag. A few US destroyers and PCs sortie on ASW missions to deal with the ring of subs around Pearl, a PC gets torpedoed but a couple of Jap subs catch a depth charge. And its a long way home...

The bright spot is near Singapore, where the PoW and Repulse sally forth with Churchillian pugnacity into the teeth of the Japanese invasion! (the BB Ise, incidentally, is confirmed sunk). As Johore Baru was practically on their doorstep the Betties can't keep them away, and the first real battle of the war turns out to be BBs duking on each other WW1 style. Marvellous. The PoW and Repulse are on 2 and 3 sys damage respectively despite taking some heavy calibre Jap rounds from Kongo, so they survived their encounter with Kongo et al no worries. And then they got amidst the landing craft, and 1600 Japs died. Winston is happy.

The Malaya based air force has to stand down for a day, unable to keep up the pace. As I tend to be the ballsy sort the PoW and Repulse are coming back for more at Johore Baru with a bombardment mission, though as they were set to retreat to Batavia and they are now some distance from Singers I suspect it'll happen the day after tomorrow, rather than tomorrow. They do have a 20 fighter CAP at least.

There are four Jap divisions in Malaya now as far as Allied intel is aware.

Nice one matey. There were good reasons the Japs landed at Khota Baru ... I'm surprised that Force Z did so well against the transports though, with me they usually retreat after encountering opposition. Which admiral was in charge?

Hi,

why did you form TF with the damaged BB's in Pearl ??

Cuz it implies in the book that being in port while being attacked means they are at their most vulnerable. The TF was still docked at Pearl, just as a TF rather than disbanded.

Apparently this was not the smartest move. Ah well, you learn by doing.

Doesn't really bother me too much though, aside from the points going in the Jap bag of course.
Assuming the PoW and Repulse can survive until the Betties appear in Malaya and so their position around Java becomes untenable, I'm sending them down to Brisbane where they can operate under better air cover than the Dutch can provide. If its one thing (the only thing) the RN is not short of, its battleships. Better than having them rot in Trimcomalee.

Leach. I did look for an aggressive but competent RN admiral, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing.

I set Force Z on a surface combat mission rather than bombardment in the hope that this would make them more persistent, as it was really the surface forces (still with troops aboard) that were the target rather than the landed troops.

I did include all the damaged light ships in the sortie, Mauritius, Jupiter and so on, so Force Z was a bit bigger than usual maybe.

EU,

Betty's start the game in Malaya. All he has to do is set them for navan strike and you are toast. Best to speed run POW and Repulse south to around the Timor area and pound anything that comes to play in the south. Away from the Betty's.

As long as they live, he has to move cautiously in the SRA.

Also, form a bombardment group up using the slow BB's in India and have them loiter in the Rangoon area. The moment he gets to Tavoy start hitting him. That will slow him down alot and add to his fatigue levels. Continue doing this until he deploys Betty's up there to stop you. You can also use CA's if you want the speed. 2 groups work the best, you can round robin him.

Good advice, 2nd, I will do that with the slow BBs in the Indian Ocean.

I was definitely over aggressive with Force Z, as the PoW ate torpedo today. I'm a bit disappointed as it was only a one off a small flight, but she went down anyway.

However! I am more than happy with Force Zs efforts. They met the enemy head on yet again, 3 BBs vs 1 BB and 1 BC, and gave more than they got. A tiny number of Nells turned out to be the death of the PoW post battle, which disappointed me (where was my smegging CAP? it would have butchered 9 Nells), but not too badly. One torpedo sunk her. ONE. I am most upset.
A Jap BB got a ripping by the PoW before she went and will be in the yard for a while, so thats a 2nd BB the Brits have knocked out in Malaya in exchange for all this pain.

The Pearl Harbour Val/Kate storm has ended. ASW efforts continue, as I got convoys of goodies from the West Coast heading there, escorted by whatever flush decks I could find. However, I want my hunter killers to get as many as they can before these convoys even arrive. They seem to be doing a good job so far. The US CVs are heading for a rendezvous at Christmas Island.

Something else of note this turn is a little raid by 4 US DDs against his convoy unloading at Borneo. They didnt do much, no torp hits sadly, but I hope they'll psychologically slow his advance somewhat, limit him to where his Betties are.

Repulse is in reasonable nick still. She's going down to Brisbane where she will become the US BB presence in the South Pacific, as Pearl was so devastating and the US is short of BBs now. By the time the US is ready to seriously move she'll have been in Brisbane for some time hopefully.
All other Philippine/Dutch/Force Z units are forming up around the south end of Java, where they will harass any units that get ambitious.

I fear I have too much of a streak of the charge of the light brigade in me - C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre!
Ahh well. Watching the outnumbered RN take on those Jap BBs and put the hurt on in gallant surface combat while outnumbered is what keeps me going. ;)

I would counter attack Lunga ASAP. Do not give him the chance to build it up. It was probably only a SNLF that landed there, so a RCT can take it back.

POW is a torpedo magnet.

I'll try, but it'll be a while. I suspect his CVs have backed off towards Truk, and I imagine they'll be going down there for the Next Phase.
Odd that he bypassed Rabaul and Shortlands, after all, no?.

RE: EUB vs Sprior - see who gets his banana straightened

Post by EUBanana »

Quiet turn. He has designs on Yenen, but they seem to be holding well. I'm keeping an eye on his supply lines, with the intent of using a third of a Chinese corps to cut them if he gives me half a chance. The AVG has been split up, one third in Mandalay, the other two thirds in China, and a few Chinese bombers are being directed towards Yenen to see what they can do.

All is pretty quiet elsewhere. One of the Darwin INF units is being scraped up for a possible early counterattack at Lunga, the Aus navy has been concentrated at Brisbane for support when it happens. Likely one fleet carrier spotted NE of Philippines, likely one CVL between the Philippines and Borneo. ASW efforts around Pearl have been intensified, anything with a depth charge launcher is being directed to use it. An AS and some supplies/fuel head for Dutch Harbour with the intent of making it a sub base for subs striking at the Home Islands, though Manila seems safe for a while yet. Speaking of which, Allied subs are finally in position, making the waters between the Philippines and Malaya hopefully a dangerous place now, and a few more scattered at chokepoints around the Philippines.

The RN in Trimcomalee, a handful of CAs and an old BB, head towards Rangoon to implement 2nd ACRs suggestion. As they aint doing anything else.

You might want to watch any RN ships near the Burmese coast. Nell o' Betties can reach there from Saigon with torps.

I'm being fairly cautious with them I think, they are being set to loiter about 300 miles NW of Rangoon. Probably too cautious for them to do any good even.

What is the range of a Betty anyway? IIRC, as I dont have the DB to hand, its 8 hexes ish.

Quiet-ish turn. The Silent Service goes into action as predicted, net result today, Sculpin in Davy Jones locker, two Jap APs get torpedoed. Sadly the torpedo hits didn't look particularly devastating, I reckon they'll live.

I'm kinda at an impasse now as far as plans are concerned. The US is still slowly getting its act together. The Chinese are still waiting to see what develops. The vice is slowly tightening around the Philippines but I think they'll last a while yet judging by his progress. Malaya is still developing, but 4 confirmed, 6 suspected Jap divisions, doesn't look good.

I keep spotting Glens flying over Pearl. These, I assume, come from a Jap sub-spy. Hunter-killer ASW TFs and Catalinas are on the prowl.

Think - how can I hurt him? Your units are not all useless.

Don't do anything reckless though.

Recon and search are all important. Your level bombers can do a lot worse than concentrating on these tasks rather then actually trying to bomb anything for a while.

Alright, I have a cogent plan finally for somewhere after looking at the map. First Allied plan of the war, rather than sitting tight and taking opportunities as they show. Even if it is an evacuation. [:D]

His forces in Malaya are concentrated in the south, in an obvious attempt to cut Singapore off early. However, he has nothing at all in the north. I suppose I could march all the way to Burma, but thats a long way, and I'm sure he'd react.

The Malayan Commonwealth units are going to start heading north. They will be able to stick to the roads and thus move at reasonable speed, and I aim to concentrate them at the northern border of Malaya. From there, a motley assortment of 10 light ships scraped up from Java and the remnant of Force Z, CLs and DDs, will evac them to India.

Hopefully he won't realise whats happening until its too late, he hasn't been reconning in that area and the engineer units will stay so he sees little green boxes in the appropriate places.
He will hopefully continue his plans on Singapore, so the 4-6 Divs he has committed there will remain tied up there - his advance will hopefully not be speeded up by the absence of Malayan forces. And I'll cadge a few extra Bdes for the Burma/India campaign.

Place part of the AVG in Rangoon, use them to LR-CAP you round robins to bombard him at Tavoy and Mouliem. Force him to bring some Zeros up there to face you.

After the 1st bombardment group goes in, send the slow BB's back to port. Only use the fast CA's and such. You can base them out of Rangoon in 2-3 ship TF's and just keep hitting him.

Once you start pounding him on the coast, start watching Rahliegh next to Mouliem. It will be just a matter of time before a division or 2 pops out from there ans says hello. Do not allow your self to get cut off. Just pound the coastal units as long as you can.
