stuff to do while we wait for WiF

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

stuff to do while we wait for WiF

Post by Chaplain »

Just finished a week-long game of WiF Global War with the new CL's and Convoys. Great fun. Managing the tankers vs. regular convoys during builds is a new challenge, as well as a new opportunity for the Axis. The merchant cruisers are alot of fun. Can't wait to get my gaming group into CWiF.

I'll be close to the head of the line on buying CWiF when it comes out, but in the meantime let me encourage folks to try HOI with the CORE mod, if you haven't already. Play it onthe 'Slow' settings and its much more of a turn-based experience than anything approaching RTS. No fancy graphics. Tons of detail. Inspired by WiF. Great forum.

While I am waiting for CWiF to come out, I thought I would build a three storey house out of matchsticks.

Then I might mow every lawn in Australia with a pair of scissors.

Then I might learn a new language and write a novel in it.

Etc etc etc.

Still waiting. [>:]

I'm playing the CWiF demo.

There is no longer a Poland.

Belgium lost 50% of thier army during a attack during a storm turn.

France lost its bombers trying to strategicly bomb Nurenburg and lost a Mech Corps before blizard conditions set in.

Back to the "Phoney War".

Axis losses Zero.

...and then I'll have children, watch them grow, and teach them to be patient so they can wait for CWiF to come out once I'm gone.

I've owned HoI2 for less than a week, so I can't make an evaluation of the AI, but this game is really cool. Lot's of detail but not overwhelming. I'm a huge WiF fan and HoI2 is right down my ally. I'd recommend it while we wait for cWiF.

I played Hearts of Iron the first version when it first came out but I found it to far to easy and the research system confusing.

Played it too, found it too easy to win.

HOI2 has a simpler and more satisfying research system. You assign country-specific "teams" to research projects. E.g., France might assign Renault to do something on armor, or Japan might assign Kure shipyards to develop new destroyers.

As for being easy to win: try Japan on the Very Hard difficulty setting. Or try France on any difficulty setting. Even as Germany, it's no longer so easy. Also, once you've figured out how to exploit the AI's weaknesses, there is multiplayer.

HOI2 isn't perfect -- real-time isn't my thing -- but it's a good game.
