3 vs 3 PBEM starting

Post by AmiralLaurent »

Hi all,

a new Pacific war will begin shortly. For once the Japanese War Minister has decided to deleguate some authority to his theater commanders while the Allied powers are also divided.

The Japanese team is composed of DuckHunt (an Army general tasked with the main Southeast Asia offensive), Hoplosternum (who spent more time in Imperial Military School learning Allied tactics than Japanese) and AmiralLaurent (an Admiral that participated to the Tsuhima Battle in 1905, didn't want to lead the CVs but now had them under his command, as most of the Pacific).

On the other side, we have a British commander (String), a Chinese-American and a "rest of the world" (Bill Durant and DirtyHarry500.... I can't find anywhere on the forum or in my mails wich command they choose).

Anyway command boundaries may change during the game (and commanders too)

Game will probably start slowly. Objective is one turn a day. We will probably need some weeks to reach this cruise speed.

Edited:

Short (oral) reports of the first (historical) turn seem to indicate really good news for Japanese. PH was hit hard, with two BB reported sunk, and few Japanese losses. And Wake fell on the first day.

Hi Harvey, well that was not the plan. I hope our PBEM will go faster than this one but I currently have still no Net connexion so the game will start slowly. I will mainly mail (from work) to my team partners what I want to change after the first turn.

With some luck, our PBEM may start this week-end. I received the new modem (for Voice on IP included) this week, so figured it was OK but the network is not ready.

I am thinking of a propaganda-oriented AAR, with some posts "Now it can be said" describing the strategic choices, blunders and misunderstandings inside teams... some time after they happen.

The other choice should be to have separate IJN and Allied AAR.

Right now the Japanese team is an united team. A main plan has been approved and then each of us has refined and changed it in his own area, so needing upgrades on the main plan. Execution will show if the main plan will survive these "minor" alterations.

Bill Durrant West Coast, Canada, North Pacific, SWPAC, Oz and NZ

We are raring to go[:)]

Hi, To make it more realistic the forum will issue orders based on the AAR that MUST be obeyed. (like politicians issuing orders with no clue of actual events or conditions)

You seem to have an opinion of politicians as high as me....

Well, Japanes politicians have allready done their major mistake (starting the war) and the Allied too (understating Japan military power).

The first two turns have been played and nothing out of the ordinary has happened, the usual landings in SRA and the rest of the pacific. Allies lost Tennessee and Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor, KB is seen retreating towards Tokyo.

Sounds very interesting. I hope to here Stilwell bitching and moaning, and MacArthur kicking up a storm at the prospects of Fortresses being sent to Dacca. [:D]

At least he has something to do! The poor sod in command of the west coast gets to ferry supplies and broken ships abck and forth.

Can I ask - how do you delimit assets? By what region they are in? So if a supply tf sets out from LA it is under whoever has Sopac until they cross a certain line, then they are the SWPAC's problem? Or do you have dibs on which forces are under your direct command, regardless of where they are?

More details on the first operations

Post by AmiralLaurent »

The first turn was a historical one.

Pearl Harbor raid used no torpedoes but nevertheless two BB sank after exploding, two PT were destroyed, 5 BB, 3 CL, 2 AV, 1 DD and 2 SS were damaged (reported at least in fire). Cost was around 20 Japanese planes.

Malaya and Siam landings were attacked by British planes, that lost several planes to AA fire and score no hit.

Clark Field was hardly hit by Japanese planes, that lost only one Zero. Batan Island was stormed north of Luzon and easily taken.

In Central Pacific, Wake Island was also taken in a storm landing without much losses.

The next day saw the first Allied reactions.

As said before, Kido Butai retires from Pearl Harbor area towards Japan. Two BBs sunk for low losses is good enough.

In Philipinnes Island, a Japanese surface TF bombed Cagayan airfield, Mindanao, during the night but without success. US submarines arrived off the landing beaches but were repulsed before attacking. Some aerial skirmishes took place over Clark Field in the morning with small losses to both sides. In the afternoon, a raid against Manilla harbour hits several ships but several Zeroes were shot down by P-40s. Egal losses were suffered by both sides. Two afternoon raids hit Clark Field and destroyed about ten planes without opposition.
Philipino reinforcements arrived in Legaspi and helped repulse a Japanese deliberate attack. North of Luzon, the 48th Div took Aparri while a fast transport bring 400 troops to Lingayen that was easily taken.

In Malaya, British bombers attacked ships off Khota Bharu but were decimated (especially Vildebeest) by Oscars and Kates flying LRCAP over the beachhead. Nells returning to bomb Singapore airfields were met by a heavy CAP of Buffaloes and P-40, as part of AVG has flown there. Both sides lost 25-30 planes. Japanese losses include 18 Nells and half-dozen Zeroes....
Troops continue to land in Khota Bharu. Only land activity is innacurate artillery fire from the Allied side.

In Pacific, Guam is now under Japanese control and the poor MSW Penguin is scuttled here (as usual).

To reply to Luskan: on the Japanese side, divisions are operationnal and not geographical. I have Kido Butai under my command right now but it may change if one of my partners has a plan that is agreed by all of three and it may return in the future to Pacific under another command.
We agreed to change some units from one "command" to another, so several players may create TFs and load troops from the same port.

A dogfight between a Kate and a Vildebeest would be funny, but yes in that case it was finger trouble and Mogami is right.

9 December 1941: a bloody day

Well I lied. The Kido Butai wasn't retiring after all, just taking a day rest. It returned SW of Pearl Harbor and found a target-rich environment. In the morning, the CA Indianapolis was surprised east of French Frigate Shoals and exploded and sank after 5 torpedoes hits. A convoy was found west of Hilo and attacked by two waves that sank 1 DD, 3 AK and 1 PT and damaged other ships.
In the afternoon, a raid was launched against PH but 12 Vals and all the escort attacked a DMS TF south of it, scoring two hits. Other bombers (150+ of them) were confronted over PH to a small CAP (a dozen planes) but lost a dozen of planes. CPT Welch, G.S. of 45th FS, shot down 9 Kates aboard his P-36 Mohawk !!! Surviving crews heavily damage 1 CL and 1 DD and also hit another CL and 2 DD. They were part of a FT TF.
Flak losses were slight during the day and no Allied plane tried to attack the Kido Butai.

In PI, I-124 torpedoed during the night a fleeing MSW SW of the islands. During the day, 24 P-40E shot down a dozen unescorted Betties over Clark Field, bad weather at Formosa grounding Zeroes. An Allied convoy trying to escape ran into a Japanese surface TF off Legaspi and 1 TK was heavily damaged and 4 AK more or less hit until 6 PT surprised the Japanes ships. All torpedoes missed but the Japanese admiral was so upset that he let the merchants escape to concentrate on the PT, that were all sunk in two battles. No Japanese ship was hit.
On Luzon Island, Vigan was taken by Japanes troops.

In southeast Asia, the day began with a good news. Dutch submarine O20 tried to enter Camranh Bay port at night but hit a mine and was damaged.
In the morning, IJAAF planes attacked Kuantan and were opposed by Buffaloes and Wirraways. 4 Oscars and 6 Buffaloes were shot down and 5 Vildebeests destroyed on the ground. At the same time a Zero sweep from Saigon met the whole AVG and Buffaloes over Singapore. 8 Allied fighters and 7 Japanese were lost.
Force Z was still anchored off the port and a Nell raid was launched in the afternoon to attack it. They met 40 P-40B and 24 Buffaloes waiting for them. The 14 Zeroes of the escort did their best to protect the bombers and died while doing so. Only one returned to base. They shot down only 4 Buffaloes but managed to cover most bombers, only 4 falling to the CAP. 25 other turned back and the 3 remaining attacked the Repulse, losing 1 plane to AA fire and missing.
Day finished with another good news. Khota Bharu, that has been bombed during the night by Kondo's BB, was taken by the first attack of the 18th Div and some Hudsons were captured here.

In China, Chinese fighters shot down two Japanese planes over Changsa but lost 4 I-153.

Allied fighters successes today (over Singapore, Clark Field and PH) have raised concerns on the Japanese Command, as show increased radio intercepts. The main plan going on but forces would be dispatched between commands to react to the Allied defense.

The British and ABDA commands are pleased to report that the Japanese are getting their noses bloodied! However they do express concern over the airstrikes by japanese carriers off Pearl Harbor.
