Gates of Troy Review: 3D Avenue

Post by JosephL »

3D Avenue just posted their review of GOT.

An excellent overall score of 8/10. Here are some clips from the review:

"Slitherine software has created not only one of the best representations of history in a video game, but also one of the toughest."
(Props to the folks at Slitherine!)

"Gates of Troy is a great game which combines three of the most popular series around today; Civilization, Sim City and Command and Conquer. The fact you also get to check out some historical campaigns, especially the Trojan Horse, really improves the game to a level that makes it a great strategy title."
(Well, I take being compared to the above mentioned titles as a compliment, but is it really accurate? Still, a big compliment in my book :-)

Take a gander at the full article here:

Very nice - Civilization is who we see ourselves competing with but up to now have only had people talk about RTW because of the battles. We'd have had much better reviews without the battles as it would have been reviewed as the strategy game it is & not an RTS without any real time control.... cos its not an RTS :)

The same people that tell us our graphics are awful are praising wargames like HOI for their graphics. I have nothing against the HOI graphical style & think it suits the game well, but why is it worth 8/10 and we get 4/10... because it was not reviewed as a strategy game.... Oh well!

I'll be honest. When I bought the game and downloaded it, I really wasn't thinking of it as a "Civilization" type game, but was expecting more of a battle oriented game. I was initially even a bit dismayed when I just jumped in and found that I didn't have total control over my armies once battle was joined.

Of course, I hadn't read the manual!

Within an hour I was appreciating the game for it's depth and for the realism of the tactical "pre-planning" battlefield setup with the kind of limited battle control that commanders of that era actually had (Attack! Rally!.. oh, shit.. RUN!) [:D]

Then came the appreciation of the civilization building and diplomatic aspects.

I'm really not surprised that some reviewers mis-categorize the game and let that distortion affect their ratings.

I'm just glad that I bought the game (thanks for the $19.95 pricing!).
Love & Peace,

My old Piczo site seems to be gone, so no more Navajo Nation pics :(

Heh my "is it accurate" comment was more in reference to Command and Conquer than Civilization. I just didn't see the parallel :-)
