I only really use RAF Wellingtons (or occasionally Blenheims) on night bomber raids as I view them as strategic and they often outrange fighter support in daylight and get massacred as they seem to try and get through un supported.

I will rarely use USAAF Liberators or Fortresses for one off raids at night against heavy cap critical locations but never in a long term campaign as they do more damage in daylight.

Martins and Chinese bombers bomb whenever they can in whatever way they can but to be blunt I cannot afford the supply to replace losses or to operate them unless at great need so I tend to use them as supply haulers to augment my Dakota Fleet

But do you encounter heavy op losses/fatigue when bombing at night at very low altitudes?

Since night bombing is screwed up and highly accurate, plus the night fighter bug is still around, me and all my opponents have a house rule about night bombing. Only Blenhiem IF can night bomb.

PLus AA at night is basically useless. I have packed every AA unit Japan owns into a base with excess support, an Air HQ, LCU HQ, Naval HQ, 20,000 supply, base has radar and I still only damaged 4 allied bombers flying at 6,000 feet at night. And he pounded the base to dust.

Night anything is totally screwed up where the air war is concerned. I did the same little test during daylight and shredded the bombers with IIRC 20 destroyed and 50+ damaged with morale in the low teens down from 99.

But wasn't the night bombing issue been re-worked in v.1,40? We had an house rules exactly the one you described, then my opponent told me that the old problems have been solved and we agreed to start use the night bomb feature.... There's a slight problem for Night-CAP, but pressing Esc button it seems to work fine and it doeas not crash anymore or freeze.

Not sure, I have not played in about 2 weeks or so. Really no time left.

Everything seems to be the same from my point of view. AA is basically useless at night, fatigue levels seem to be the same, accuracy is phenominal at night, and I have never trusted night intercepts since the 1st crash I had. Plus the Japanese do not get true night fighters until mid 1943 or so.

yes it was re-worked, and the damage is lower then in 1.3.

Generaly speaking, Allies inflicting more damage since their LB had bigger bombload than japanese "baby" LB. I agree with that 100%.

However, i'm little bit suprised with low ops losses during night bombing.

In the Battle of Britain (ascendant of UV/WiTP engine - at least for air combat, autor Gary Grigsby), german bombers often crashes on the ground while they lands (returning from night bombing).

Also, in WiTP, AA is not efficient at night. So, we have to live with that and hope our enemys will not switch their completly airpower on night attack bombing. [;)]

mine is doing exactly that:-)
Do you think that the tony will be a good ( and saying good i mean being able to inflict at least some damage) night interceptor?
I'm R&R a lot on tonies and i'm really putting my hopes in this model...
If this night struggle will continue i'll adopt the best defence: ATTACK( thinking of bombing with 8 BBs chadupur under the cover of 50 zeros from Rangoon).......

I doubt. Mogami said, "Fighters without radar are pretty hopeless at night. Allied fighters as well. What makes a fighter a night fighter is radar. Helps if the base (or CV) also has radar.", and thats how it works in the WiTP. So my understanding is no matter how good fighter you have it will remain useless until:
a) is not equiped with radar
b) if defending hex hasn't got radar.

In history also. German night intercepters were useless until they eqiuped with radar (i think it was called Lichtenstein). Japanese failed to equip their fighters and it understable why didn't achive significant results.

Secondly, 2ACR said "PLus AA at night is basically useless. I have packed every AA unit Japan owns into a base with excess support, an Air HQ, LCU HQ, Naval HQ, 20,000 supply, base has radar and I still only damaged 4 allied bombers flying at 6,000 feet at night. And he pounded the base to dust."

I wish he will put some additional input was the base equiped with sound detector or radar type 13. I think first Base force equiped with radar comes in december '43, so im not sure if "ACR reffers to radar or more likely sound detector.

Also, do not know if Base force with sound detector upgrade to BF with radar type 13 and when?

so, probably the best thing to do (especially early in the war) to bombard enemy base with BB's.

Oh, i've hijacked this AAR.... and, glad to see strategic bombing in China (resources) rocks!
[:D]
I will ask my frend is it worth it and let you know...

You did not hijacked this thread!!! One of the most interesting thing of AARs is to discuss your strategy with other people...if not it's like talking to a wall:) So please, feel free to add comments and tips whenever you like!

I'm sure i've put in Rangoon everything i could( some AA units, 2 AirHQ units, 450 air support with sound detectors and all these stuff). the bombardment issue with BBs is a risky game. I have to detach those priceless ships from the Batavia siege and send them is the jaws of the enemy. Chandupur will surely have tons of mines and CD guns, not to say of the huge mass of bombers placed around that damned area.....but unfortunately i do not see any other ways to stop this massacre!
One could be try another retaliation by night, falling from 7,000 fts to 5000....i'm gonna try but i doubt that i'm going to be satsfied.....[:-]

Dont worry about mines and CD guns. Just set bombardment task force "no bombard escort" option and DD will stay out range CD guns and mines - well it should work, but...

Bombardment TF's done good job in my pbem game with "no bombard escort". Not a single DD was hit by mines or guns. Even more, my opponent send B TF with escort of DD Tavoy, and my mines stay silent for three times.

Danger is coming from air. If he have torpedo bombers (Beaufort is especially dangerous, but they SHOULD be in PM or somewhere near) with fighter cover than you will need lots of aircover. Just remember, the further is LR CAP form your base, the lesser is number of your ac on LRCAP.

Maybe it's a good idea to form two Bombardment TF's(B TF) one of them containing fast BB (30 knots), followed by B TF with "real" BB (Nagato...25 knots). Maybe you will be lucky and enemy wont spot your fast B TF, so you can destroy some ac on the ground. Next turn Nagato&co can finish the job. It is not likely, but with some luck...

My opponent is smart enough to have moved his bombers inland to Dacca. last night was raining both over chadupur and Dacca, so i saw the news "air mission canceled on Dacca and Chadupur", which means he has bombers in Chadupur, Dacca and Diamond....that's not a good news for me. Those liberators from Diamond hit hard again my defences at Rangoon. Another sleepless night for my pilots ...and their morale is falling down. now that 4 of mine BB are comming back to Singapore from a trip to Batavia i'll see what to do

Two more days in this damned war passed by without any change( no reports this time).
Deep in the middle of March.
Another two nights of struggle for the aviators at Rangoon. No way to stop the iron rain. Had to move back two daitais of zeros: they had 7 and 10 planes with 24 and 21 pilots available[:(]
At Mandalay the fight has begun. Will last for long i'm sure.
At Batavia we keep on bombing in order to burn some supplies left to the defenders.
KB1 is sailing slowly towards Truk.
3 BBs and 4 CAs made their way towards rapair shipdocks: need to low those bad red numbers!
Nothing more to report: quite boring turns

Tonight was my last attempt of retaliating with night bombing. While my AA sucks, his works pretty well, shooting down 4 of my nells, while the other one was shot down by a Buffalo[:(]......
His bombers drained my zeros daitais. I have to move them back to Singapore in order to replenish their numbers.
It's a pity, but i must let the skyes over Rangoon to his bombers: no way to stop them
while this night warfare goes on, in China the activities rose up again. The whole western china is going to be assaulted by my brave troops. At Mandalay i'm trying to flank his positions, keeping his troops busy in the city center.
Batavia won't last that long.
Studying a plan for timor and PM....

The Siege of Mandalay

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

My LRCAP from Pagan manage to put some hits on his bombers trying to sow down my advance through the Burman city of Mandalay. Some more zeros are coming to give a help to those brave oscars. I'm waiting for a retaliation at Pagan, so i put some oscars on CAP today...let's hope he's not comming with his damned night bombers......

Are there any Chinese troops in Burma? :) Also, great job cutting the road! It seems to me by the numbers that he hasn't commited all his forces to burma (probably left some to defend in India, which is good for him but better for you)

Hi alikchi,

no, at the moment i have not fought any chinese in Burma till now. They can always be at Lashio or back next to the trails that lead to India, but i do not think so.
Thanks! it was a pain to see those worderfull guys being paradropped behind the enemy's lines and watch them , without being able to do anything for them, opening the way trhough the jungle , attacked by the malaria and by enemy planes, with no supply and no support at all....

In Burma he has now 37 units( around Mandalay) and 20,000 men ( probably the 18th Uk div) Stuck at Akyab. I guess he left one division in India and that's all. I can be wrong off course, but i'm pretty sure he doesn't have much left there...

Now that Java is going to fall easily in my hands, i must start to think at what next.
Darwin is prooving , with his AFs , to proove a problem in my southern defensive perimeter. His ability to night bomb everything he wants with no problem will force me to abbandon every single AF in range of his 4E bombers ( At rangoon i'm experimenting this shame!). So Tarakan and Ambonia are not safe AF for my air divisions. I really think i'll need to take Timor by April. 2 Divisions should be enough i hope. Once there, i'll build up some AFs to level 4, but i'm pretty sure those AFs will be useless with the previous statement about night bombing. nonetheless i need to push forwards south my perimeter in order to defend Sosarbjia and Java from his Bombers.
Once Java will be conquered 1 division will be redeployed in the PI, one in Singapore, 2 will remain at Java, 1 division will guard Timor, while 1 division will go for another mission. I made up my mind and decide to go for PM by the beginning of MAy. What's happening at Rangoon can happen at Rabaul, and i cannot let him gain the the air superiority so easy in the Bismarks. So i'll use one division, the south sea det, 2 base forces, 1 engeneers bn and some arty units for the operation against PM. At PM at the moment there are 33,000 fighting troops. KB death star will cover this operation with some BB TFs in close support. If i manage to take PM it will be really hard for him to put a foot in NG or in the solomons.
Still have to plan this thing...but i'm pretty sure i'll give it a try

What d'u think?

Struggle for Mandalay

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The situation in China is getting a bit faster. My northern army is approaching Chungking which should be sourrounded and attacked within 2 weeks, while my planes from Changsha keep on pounding his resources.
In Burma is trying to avoid the envelope around Mandalay. Now a regiment of th 18th UK div arrived at the sieged city, but the forts are crumbling down quite fast and my cap is doing a good job against allied bombers.
The solomons are getting reinforcements. Few more units arrived at Lunga,Wewak,Lae,Buna and Shortland. I'm quite sure he's ready to start to night bomb Gili Gili, but, as long as i cannot do anything against it, i'll live with this problem.
My KB1 is slowly arriving at Rabaul. Should be there within 3 or 4 days. Then two new KBs will be organized and will sail southwards, looking for a carrier battle, while i'm organizing the upcoming invasion of PM.

RE: Struggle for Mandalay

Post by String »

With night bombing you might as well have hit some jungle several miles from the airfield. Getting to the target during a night with no moon means basically flying with a map and a stopper and then guessing when you are over the airfield. Provided that the AA guns and such don't open up from the base. Even then one can only guess the location of the airfield. Frankly i'm amazed that the early ww2 bombers could hit anything smaller than a large city ..
