Welcome to Vietnam!

Post by Wild Bill »

We want to welcome all of those who find a fascination for the epic fighting that went on for nearly 12 years by US forces in Southeast Asia.

SPNam will be based on the earlier Steel Panthers III game. It will, however, be on a squad, single vehicle level and can be played from a platoon to a regimental size battle.

The campaign editor will allow you to make campaigns, say for example on the 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) or the Blackhorse (11th Armored Cavalry Regiment).

Many features and weapons peculiar to that war will be included. We plan to incorporate some of the sweeping changes to be implemented in the soon to appear Steel Panthers World at War, plus some more new ones.

The game will cover the French-Indo China phase of the war and will continue until 1975, when South Vietnam finally fell to the forces from the north.

It is going to be a tactical level game that will give you a feel for the fighting in Nam. It is one you don't want to miss. Look for it soon after the publication of SPWAW.

So if you have any questions or comments, this is the place to bring them.

I'm looking forward to this game. Question; will this game be a add on to the SPWAW, or a different rework of the SPIII game? Also what if anything has been done to the way helicopters work? IMHO helo could make SPIII games very unbalanced.

Thanks for the effort

Thanks Foley. This will probably be a stand-alone game just as SPWAW. You'll need a disk to run it, probably SP2 or SP3, but that is a requirement from SSI.

The disk won't run the game, but is the key that unlocks the door so you can play it.

Helicopters will be addressed. Just as in SPWAW, attack aircraft now don't reveal everything, the same will be true with choppers.

They'll still be lethal, but not the battle deciders they were in SP2 and SP3. The idea here is to give a more realistic feel to the helicopters, their pluses and minuses.

So yes, that issue will be addressed and hopefully fixed to your liking.

Another reason for me to drool. If I remember right from another forum we'll have CIA secret warriors in Laos, Brown Water Warriors in PBRs....

Yes, yes, yes, Sappers, I mean real mean NVA sappers, tunnels, mad minutes, fletchettes, and a ton of things peculiar to Vietnam. I am hoping we can really make it have a "Nam" feel. I think we can.

I'm really excited about this one...WB

What 'sides' can be played (apart from the obvious ones that is)? Presumably Viet Cong, NVA, USMC, US Army and ARVN.
But what about Cambodians, Khymer Rouge, Australians(yay!) or any of the other (admittedly small) nationalities present?

By all means, and Korea had two full divisions there that fought fairly well. So yes, there would be a representation of all of these countries, French too for the period of 45-54.

Instead of the standard briefing screens, will we get the Five o'clock Follies?

At last someone's doing the French Indochina war!!

I'd love to see:

Foreign Legion infantry
Foreign Legion paras
Colonial infantry & paras
Moroccan and Algerian tiralleurs
Vietnamese colonial infantry & paras
The elite "Korea" battalions that were with GM100
Those ridiculous M-24 tanks
Air support with F6f's and A-26s with NAPALM
The specialized riverine "dinassault" units..
And Viet-Minh sappers...infantry...artillery

Recreating the 1953 parachute drop-with actual paras!!-that put GAP-1 up against the Viet-Minh 148 Independent Regiment on DZ Natasha during Operation Castor, the opener for Dien Bien Phu...

How sweet it is...

Stupid question. Is this another free download or a commercial release?

Why was SPWAW produced for free?

SPNam should be a freebie too. This was done in agreement with SSI. They would only let us do the game if no money was made from it.
And we wanted to do it. So that was the price we paid (G)...WB
