3 UV and 2 Witp games going on, had more but a few guy's dropped in WITP.
Most of the hard core players are slugging it out till the end though .
I will still play UV for years to come as long as there are newcomers to play
who have an interest....
And there is no better training software for WITP than UV.....

Still have 2 PBEM games going, both reaching a climax

Problem is Wobbly has gone to get married, nothing worse, play for 6 boring months of dodge and weave, then when we finally grapple, real life gets in the way.
We will finish it though.

UV is like a appetiser, a snack , before the WITP main course.....

You won't have to worry as if he got married UV and WITP should take
care of that silly little marriage thing quickly.

I have one game going too even though I have WitP (I'm Rogue's opponent).

The thing I like about UV is that you can do a turn in about 10 minutes once the initial turns get going.

How long does a WITP turn take?

It is a shame they can not break WITP down into theatres for different players to do...
So you have a central pacific admiral, south pacific admiral and an overall commander doling out resources and running the supply game....
To quote from Evans/Peattie`s {Kaigun}

political and strategic mistakes live forever". The authors were refering to Japan but the same could be said of the US misadventure in Iraq

Actually, if I understand you correctly, there are some PBEM games going that do just that. There's one that's a 3 on 3 game. Only time will tell if 6 people can keep going for a whole game. In fact, they already had to replace one player.

As for how long a WitP turn takes, I guess it depends on the person. It takes me about an hour per turn after the initial couple of turns, but I realistically could do it in a half hour if I focused a little more.

Well you can do that by assigning theaters to the AI to manage. However, the AI is so limited that most players are reluctant to do this. Biggest thing is that although you can assign production and supply to the AI-it does a pitiful job of it, so you really must micromanage this aspect of the game as well. It really gets hard and detailed and I think this turns a lot of players off.

The whole project was indeed a massive and ambitious undertaking. There was just bound to be problems.

Once you are into the flow of the game and everything is going mostly as planned
then it takes longer to run the combat turn than the time to micro adjust things.
As offensive and defensive actions are played out then it takes time to move divisions
and task forces around to set up your next objectives.
Genarally 10:00 - 35:00 mins AVG for turns with the occasional 1 - 2 hours of heavy
rearangement.

The Auto convoy system works OK if you keep it small and manageble like picking
several bases to have it run supplies too and then make your moves from those bases
so you could set it up like a UV system were say Truk gets the supply from Tokyo and
you divy it out from there, except you will have a dozen places like that.

UV is a much more enjoyable and playable game than WitP. While WitP has some nice features, it is much too ponderous and slow[>:]. I wish [&o]Matrix would spend more effort on the AI portion of the game.

Agree, I owned UV and WITP, and I'm still playing UV, which was at the beginning already heavy to handle (If you've got a real life/job/family outside) in terms of rules, aspects, time user... I'm dissapointed by WITP which is to difficult to play, to slow, overwhelming even for hardcore wargamers like me..... and I don't have 2 years at disposal for that.

I hope next opus from 2by3 on this theme will be not to far from UV interface and spirit.
A+

I'm retired, but don't have the time for WitP. That's too bad.

WitP is an awesome achievement. But it's success is likely it's biggest liability. Too great a scale, too much detail, and campaigns that could take...well....years to play. How will we feel about the game, it's graphics, AI etc. in 2 years? While difficult to predict all you have to do is think about games you've owned and played for more than 2-3 years consistently.

I love UV and WitP, and play against AI as much as I can, as well as PBEM. But opponents are sometimes difficult to find and keep.

I still play lots of UV - it is STILL an excellent game.

I hope Matrix releases the source code (under Matrix supervision) so that gamers can continue working on the game. New features, etc can only help increase UV sales...

The one thing I like about UV is that it is smaller in size and is perfect for games that a person can complete in their lifetimes - heheh

As for releasing the source code:

A few dedicated gamers (with a Matrix Non-disclosure Agreement) could basically work on UV for free. We could then try to implement as many bug fixes and add as many new enhancements as possible, and add more features to the campaign editor.

Basically, Matrix would get an improved game (at no extra cost to them), which would help increase sales of the game over the long run...

Just fired up another campaign game today as the Allies vs the Japanese AI:

Scenario 19, very hard, with 70% force allotement for me, and 200% force allotement for the Japanese.

Currently, one month into the game, the Japanese are giving me some real whup-ass...

And I'm loving it [:D]

I'm also reading Costello's "The Pacific War" while playing...

Still can't beat this game for sheer fun and entertainment.
