naval artillery

Post by Hrothgar »

Could anyone sumarize the artillery abilities of naval units? I know they can take out strongpoints, etc., but can they be used in any other way? They don't seem to show up as available artillery for support, nor, I think, can they be used for barrages. However, when I have a ship selected, and I place the cursor over an enemy combat unit, I get an icon showing an artillery piece. Once, while this icon was displayed, I clicked, but nothing seemed to happen. I haven't seen this icon in the manual, so I have no idea what it symbolizes.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Only destroyers and destroyer escorts can provide shifts in combat and their range is rather limited. All ships can attack strongpoints. The green icon showing the artillery piece means that ship (usually a battleship, monitor or heavy cruiser) can provide interdiction. The effect of interdiction is to increase the the cost of moving units or tracing supply through the interdicted hex.

I must confess though that once the land battle moves out of the range of all the naval units I am at a loss as to what to do with them. [8D]

Thanks. Do you apply the interdiction by clicking on the hex? Is there a graphic indication of the interdiction, as there is with other types of interdiction?

Yep. A hex under naval interdiction has the green disk with the artillery icon. Roads and crossroads are probably the best targets. Don't forget that some of your heavier land artillery units have this ability too. And it can't be supressed like air interdiction can.

Thanks a lot, Platoonist! That answers my questions. Now I'll be able to make better use of my naval assets.
