Demo Battle

Post by YankeeDoodle »

I was looking for B5 mods and stumbled onto this game. It looked interesting so I got the demo..and what I immediately noticed was the potential for custom missions. And so it became a matter of setting up a battle. I reworked a Destroyer Duel. I did several incarnations of it changing the ships around to try new stuff and such. Of course I had the best time with the following combo.

1 Orion CV (Yorktown)
4 Broadsword DD(Porter,Simms,Lardner, Farragaut)
4 Berrents class FF(Helms, Simon, Nicole, Somme)

vs

1 Dragon CV(Kaga)
4 Wolf DD(Tone, Kongo, Ise, Fuso)
4 Tiger FF(Yakaze,Hakaze,Okikaze,Mogami)

Dante System

The stage was pretty much set for an enjoyable Carrier battle, and christ it was. I forgot what the Kaga's fighters were nor did I really care when I set it up, I believe they were Raptors. About 24 of them and 12 Cobra's. The Kaga's squardons were Zero and Kate. While the Yorktown had 24 Stormhawks and 12 Cobras. I hadnt really adjusted the range on any of the ships there only the added ones and so we saw each other pretty quick and conducted a quick probe just to get the range. It took about 15 seconds before the range and scope of the other battlegroup was determined but when it was I immediately set about sending the Destroyers forward. I dispatched Nicole and Helms to screen for the Destroyers while the Somme and Simon were held back to screen for the Yorktown. My first intention was really space superiority so when I had a chance I dispatched 4 Stormhawks to escort the Yorktown, and had every other fighter deployed to intercepting enemy fighters, or out on Patrol in which case they'd intercept enemy fighters on their own.

The dogfighting lasted for a good five minutes. I hadnt paid close enough attention to the battle when I realized I made a critical tactical error. The enemy was using its Cobra's to attack my Destroyers. And I had forgotten all about my Cobras. When I finally get my Cobra's into space the Larder and Helms had been hulled while the the Farragaut had taken heavy damage. Meanwhile the Ise, and Fuso were taking damage, and the Cobra strikes I dispatched were doing their jobs.

Unfortunately I need to make sure to pay attention to the Flagship more often. The Yorktown was getting pounded by fighters and a pair of Cobra's which went right by the main fight. My PDL was doing all it could to hold off the enemy fighters but I only put 4 Stormhawks and they didnt have the missiles remaining to take care of all the enemy. Meanwhile the Kaga jumped out of the system and my own fleet was still taking a beating although enemy fighters were being mopped up. Couldnt say the same thing about their Destroyers The Fuso and Ise were gone as well as the Mogami but it had cost my another Destroyer and my last screening Frigate. At this point I dispatched the last two Frigates to try and keep up with the Battle. But with 2 enemy Frigates left and 2 enemy destroyers I figured it was time to turn tail and run. I turned the Carrier 180 degrees and kicked up the engines to full power meanwhile recalling whatever flights were left. About 16 Stormhawks and 8 Cobras. Christ does it take a long time for those fighters to get back on deck. Then again when doing like 400 in speed no wonder they have to catch up and then land. Of course there were accidents here and there..but when the last Cobra was on I jumped to the Janek system to go Kaga hunting..I figured they had sacrificed a good portion of their fighters in the Dante system where my last Destroyer had been destroyed and my Frigates were now the focus of attention. They jumped out before they could be destroyed as well and rondevoused with the Yorktown at Janek. I decided it was time to end the battle there as frankly I wasnt going to win and I was way to tired to do at least an hour of hit and run attacks to wipe out the last of the escorts and then go hunting for the Kaga. But this is a demo I will keep replaying until that pesky Kaga gets it.

Very interesting indeed! If you love large fleet engagements, try some of my missions on SSC, like return of the king, carrier Vs BB, Brutus Caesar must die, etc...
Loved your account of the battle, though![;)]

I DLed the full version of SSC and jumped head first into the campaign even though I got all the single player/multiplayer missions from the site/ Christ was this game one really well kept secret. I'm surprised more folks havent heard of it before. I'm hooked into the Campaign though so I havent touched the mission editior again except for when I wanted to point up to Captain so I can get my hands on a Cruiser Squadron.

Indeed! This game is awesome and now you see why I think BBs are missing! They open so many possibilities, specially for large fleet engagements.
If you want to move up quickly in rank, go to SSC and download the rank advancing mission. It will help you to get favour with the admiralty in a quicker way![;)]
