Red or white with that, do you think?
Serve whichever one you used to deglaze the crispy bits from the pan, of course.

There are two different things being discussed here:

One is cannibalism by starving people. The Donner Party (early California pioneers) did that when they were trapped all winter in a valley with no food. They ate the bodies of those who had already starved.

The guy on Chichi Jima who executed and ate prisoners is different. That wasn't starving people doing in desperation something to stay alive but an individual choosing to behave in a foul manner.

I don't see the two as having much to do with each other.

"Would you like light or dark meat?"

And let us not forget the immortal "Packer Snacker" at the U of Colorado, named after that famous gourmet Alfred E. Packer.

As described by it's historic practicioners in the South Seas, the preparation of "Long Pig" is generally described as an open pit barbeque. Obviously to do it right, you need a goodly supply of "Bora-Bora Masterpiece" sauce and a long handled brush. Delicacies such as the plams of the hands and soles of the feet should be reserved for officers. And Beer would be the appropriate drink of choice. Side salads are optional....

Might have happened. In fact, I am almost sure that it did happened. Possibly the Japanese ate each other as well. Starvation is a horrible way to die. Does not really matter. No less brutal than the extermination of six million jews, or the Japanese experiements on humans in Asia. Not to mentions the tens of thousands of helpless civilians that died on Okinawa. Some might say the Atom bomb as well.
