Not understanding something here

Post by chicagocubs21 »

First of all great game! Plus its free! Can't get much better than that. I loved playing Panzer General in college and glad that there is something else out there to play.

Okay, I just had my first battle. It was defend/delay against the Italians. With my armor I could not shoot at Italian armor and the same goes for my anti-tank guns. I could only shoot infantry. This was during my turn. During the Italian turn I was given the option for my armor, AT, and artillery to shoot at the Italian armor. I would choose yes at first but then I started to choose no thinking that I would be able to then shoot during my turn. That didn't work. What am I missing here?

I am sure that it is somewhere in the manual but I can't locate the topic. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, I strongly recommend using the scenario tutorials, and read the manual. Yes, it's a tough slog, but this game does have a steep learning curve. I've been involved with it for several years and am still learning.

Welcome aboard, but beware--once this game gets into your blood, you'll never let it go. [:)]

Without knowing the battlefield conditions, I would guess that the units you were trying to fire on were out of range or out of line of sight of the unit trying to fire.

During your opponents turn, you have the option of firing on his moving pieces. This is called OpFire. There is a setting on the preferences screen to allow the AI to always fire for you, instead of prompting you if its ok to fire.
The gnome zaps a wand of death. (Nethack)
Don't get hurt! (XCOM: Apocolypse)
Incoming firepower has the Right of Way!
Fire at Will (or Wesley)!

When you have the unit you want to fire with selected, it will report at the bottom of the screen how many enemies are seen. If this number is 0 then you won't have targets to fire at. Press T to open up the targeting screen. Press N and P to cycle through targets. Press F to fire.

If unit has enemy seen but reports 'No Targets', then the targets are out of range. Sometimes you will notice that a tank can't fire on infantry with its main gun because it is out of HE shells. I have not heard of ATG's and tanks not being able to fire on other tanks during your half of the turn but then being able to op-fire.

If something truly screwy is going on, I would recommend deleting your preferences file. This file sometimes gets corrupted and can cause a whole host of problems with game play. It is located in the save folder inside your main SP:WAW folder. The file will be recreated when you start the game again and you will have to reset your preferences.

If none of this works, we can see about you saving the game and mailing it to one of us to try to figure out what is happening.

click on the unit you want to use, then right-click around the unit, what hexes are darkened are out of your line of sight like behind a hill, or behind a forest, so you cant fire there.
