How I found Matrix

Post by mogami »

Hi, I really enjoyed playing CWGII and was looking forward to CWGIII. It was on one of the site tracking CWGIII progress that I found a link to Matrix Games. At the time Matrix was planning a Napoleonic game so I came over to check it out.
Both the Matrix game and CWGIII were cancelled. But I began playing SPWaW and the Matrix version of Pacwar.
I had become some what fed up with playing CWGII online because other players felt it was perfectly ok to use limbered arty and their General units to block retreats of enemy units. ("Hey it's allowed so it must be ok")
After I began playing SPWaW online with Tankhead I stopped playing everything else except PacWar PBEM.
When 2by3/Matrix began posting delvelopment of UV I was busy doing the first Mega Campaign for SPWaW (Desert Fox) By the time I checked out progress they had already formed the beta team for UV. I began following it. (Actually I responded to a question from 2by3 concerning fuel use in the game)
Been hooked ever since. When I got my copy of UV I played it for almost 48 hours without sleep against the AI.
Over time I have drifted away from SPWaW and PacWar and played UV and now WITP most of the time. (But I still helped with Watchtower and Screaming Eagles Mega Campaigns)
I really can't stand to even look at PacWar anymore. SPWaW I would play if I had a good online partner and more then 24 hours in a day.

I would be very excited if anyone began CWGIII project again. (I'd make sure you could not use Limbered Arty and Generals to block enemy retreats.

Gary Grigsby's Warship/Battlecruiser.

A modern turn based tactical warship combat game for WWI and II would be just lovely.

I have the two games (via an Apple IIe emulator) but while I was able to monkey with them to improve certain flukes, only a remake can truely fix all of the bugs in an otherwise golden apple of a wargame(s) (for one i cant fix the armor penetration formulas)

Hi, CWGIII was to be the campaign game where the players controled production and decided where to move. CWGII Campaign had you fighting the historical battles. The results were supposed to carry over from one battle to the next but I never saw where it did anything. COnfederate units I wiped out in one battle were there for the next.

There are a few old board games I would love to see made into video games. Across 5 Aprils was a good one, We the People, 1775, and the Siege of Jerusalem. X-Com absolutely has my vote be touched up so it could play on Windows XP. I hope that game would not be remade as the other titles in the series were just horrible especially the last one. Also, I am surprised no body has mentioned this one Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. That was by far the funnest I ever had playing a flight sim. Yes the flight model sucked and the damage was not realistic, but that campaign simulator was unbeatable. Those 3 dynamic campaigns it had made me play them over and over again. I really wish Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe could be touched up so it could play on XP. SWOTL gets best all time flight sim in my book[&o]

thanks,

I just thought of some more titles.

Flight of the Intruder: Played the hell out of that one ..back before Super VGA was out.
Archon :Old C-64 FPS/Chess game.
Master of Monsters: Old Sega hard to explain.
StarShip combat Sim: Old FASA game board game ...but since its Star Trek related the lisc would be excessively costly (thanks Viacom!)
Into the Fire: Sierra's Babylon 5 game which got pulled after 70% completion. Which was about insane since B5 was still playing and had decent ratings at the time.

Age of Rifles sounds like a good one.I've only played the demo, but now that DOS is dead i can't even play that.

I think i also remember the Wargame Construction Kit.That came out a long, very long, time ago.Being a little kid holding the box in my trembeling hands by what it described, wishing i had a real computer to so i could play it...instead of a commodore 64....though Word Zapper wasn't bad[8|]

For me, Liberty or Death hands down. I loved the game.

How would you update it?I loved that game, but things being what they are,you would have to seriously upgrade the graphics.Though i would still play it if i could kick my old Sega back to life. The best part was Bayonet attacks and ambushes, from cav and guerillas, though the actual combat only played one role in the game.It was very deep for its time all things considered.

Yea, I`d love to see American Civil War on the same scale as WITP..Maybe the South would be winable if the player could control production, and mass armies insead of trying to garrision every little community under the sun..Could be totally awesome--if done correctly..

Its not quite the same, but there was a PC version. I love it very much, and it and PTO were the reasons that I regretted selling my old sega. Imagine though, Liberty or Death with 2005 graphics. Ah, to dream.

Wasn't there an old pre-Harpoon game called North Atlantic 86 that covered the convoy war in the event of a European War? I would love an updated Harpoon or something that covered that genre. I have played the most recent updated Harpoon, but something that is more turned based to make it PBEM playable would be better. Something like a PacWar meets War in Russia. Covering the land and air and naval side of a 1980's European War would be a great game.

I'd like to see a new Harpoon game with some new and better graphics.

I'd also like to see a new "Carrier Strike": take command of a carrier battlegroup; actually get into the hanger and load ordance; choose the type of strike planes for attacks, etc... all with new graphics...
Drinking a cool brew; thinking about playing my next wargame....

Yes, it was called 688 Attack Sub by John W. Ratcliff. You were the commander of a Los Angeles Class Submarine. It was fun, and I have it sitting on my shelf today. I do not remember it being all that detailed. It was more or less, here are your orders to play the battle and sink some stuff. It had great graphics for the time. On the back it shows the graphics and says, "688's stunning 3D graphics blow everything right out of the water." The requirments were 16 color EGA, DOS 2.0, or 256 Color VGA.

LOL it's good to see that OLD games never die, they just don't work anymore.

Speaking of which, how many computer games do you all own total? I have a case that holds 100 cd's it's all full, then another rack that holds my 16 top games it's all full, then a closet full of commodore 64 and Amiga 500 games it's full. lol
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

I just counted 63 for which I still have the game boxes (plus downloaded games).

I'd have many more to count, but about 5 years ago I lost my house and finally threw all my Apple II and MAC wargames into the dumpster so I don't have that closet anymore like you do [;)] I've started unloading some of my old DOS titles too I just gave away the "Perfect Trilogy" (the Perfect General series) to an impoverished co-worker who has an ancient PC and only runs DOS and WIN 3.1 titles. He also got both of my "Aces" flight simulators (Aces Over Europe and Aces over the Pacific). Kinda hated to part with them, but IL-2 and Pacific Fighters pretty much relegates those old titles to the dustbin of history.

My old Piczo site seems to be gone, so no more Navajo Nation pics :(

That musta been rough. I've thought of doing that, even thought of dumping my 10 year subscriptions of PCgamer and Computer Gaming world into the trash, but, I can't, I just can't do it. lol

I might someday be the only person in the world with a commodore 64 and commodore 64 games and they'll put me on CNN and ask me all kinds of questions and I'll be famous and Donald Trump will invite me to play Apprentice and I'll win. lol rofl Course I'll be about 80 then, lotta good that job will do me then. haha

Far, far, too many. And that's long after all the Amiga and DOS stuff got slung out. Maybe twenty in the "installed" category, another forty in the "may well play again at some stage" category, and two drawers (maybe another 100) full on top of that that I really ought to get rid of.

Great thread:

I loved the road war games, There is something there that would make a great new game.

Post apocalypse world.
Build a gang.
Choose and recruit on a need scale.
scavange for needs.
Build an empire

What else do you need for a great game????????

And forgot to add:
Find any road form of transport and fill it with weapon crazy maniacs. (could do this in the old versions but just think what could be done now! ( custom jobs)

Thinking of a 2D battleground like Jagged Alliance2 - how cool with 2 buss loads of radiation loaded crazies with shotguns, the odd AK and .22 air guns - bearing down on a flat bed truck with a badly mounted Lewis gun, some home made Brown Bess's and a crate of Molotov cocktails.

From a side road we see a guy on a moped with a crazy grin with a monkey on his back clutching a bunch of Bananas - is he for real? or are the bananas smoking?

And what are they fighting for?

An old Tyre depot with 40 new tyres (only 14%) of which are usable of to your gang. Some medicine. Some food. A few porno vids and a complete tool kit with captive elite engineer.

Roadwar was an idea way before it's time!!
