Seems like they have the guns for it. Also APD's are not allowed as well....

Yea, I'd like to use my original Lexington & Saratoga as a Bombardment TF with their 8" guns, Enterprise & Yorktown can come along for close in support with their 5" guns [:D]

Yes, it's too early in the morning for me to be posting [X(]

You can't torpdeo a Base?[&:]
Reminds of an old McHale Navy episode where a torpedo is fired from a sub, runs up the beach of their island and blows up the cache of "supplies".

Hey,
I don't see why Tanaka's question would be so funny. [:-]

AV are more or less converted civilian ships,
but CS are Scout Cruisers and looked like light japanese cruisers,
with DP guns under turrets.
They were made for patrol or DD task forces reinforcement,
I don't see why they could not attack / bombard along with DDs and cruisers.

This is obviously true for APDs (japanese APDs are nothing else that old DDs).

Whoops, wrong question ...

What do you mean specifically? Both APD & CS can be put in a bombardment TF.

As to the merits of getting in close enough to use 5" guns and take counter fire from 6" shore batteries with no armor ... well, to each their own.

Well, a Japanese submarine DID bombard Sydney and Newcastle in Australia during WW2 (no - I am NOT advocating that this be added).
Information about my WitP map, and CHS, can be found on my WitP website

IJN subs also bombarded the west coast of US on occasion (shelled a refinery early in the war, iirc).

I don't count the time my father's ship accidentally shelled San Diego during AA practice and then left port in a hurry (steaming over a telephone/telegraph cable and destroying it in its haste) This went down in the "official histories" as an IJN sub attack - true story![:-][:D][X(]

PS - IJN subs were also known to shell "island outposts" such as Midway. They also shelled Hawaii (Hilo and other places, iirc).

EDIT UPDATE: I checked with my father - he says the city struck by their AA practice was Ventura, California not San Diego. He also says the Navy "did a nice job in covering it up."

Hi, A real long time ago it was one of the features I asked for. I had visons of driving the Allied player nuts shelling isolated places.

It WOULD be cool! Well, maybe in 10 years when they release WITP 2!

I think it would have sucked given the bombardment model. Too many bombardments as is. US were going to use Narwhal to bombard the Emperors coastal residence but decided it might make the Japanese even more bent on death for the Emperor.

thats just it. they can be put into a bombardment task force but they do not do anything. check the combat report. only the bbs, ca's, cl's, dd's participate....

Thats why I asked what you meant ... they are not coded as a valid ship type to do bombardment.

does this mean they will be coded to do bombardment??? [:)]

PG boats can be put in a bombardment taskforce as well but do not bombard either even though some have guns as big as destroyers....

Don't know, might break things like the AI who has a tough enough time figuring out what ships to use for what.
