It's Christmas Eve 1941. I decide to send out some PT boats in the Philippines to keep him honest, hoping to bag some Marus. Sadly, he has a lot of light forces still assigned there apparently - but no matter, the PTs charge! 5 PTs are lost in exchange for 3 DDs each getting one torpedo each, two of them now heavily damaged.
Sounds like a good exchange, says the ruthless Mac.

Aside from that fairly quiet, though these US dud torpedos on their subs are getting really irksome to watch. The Silent Service would have racked up about 15-20 kills by now by my reckoning if they had torpedoes that worked.

Top ace is an AVG pilot over Hengchow with 15 kills. Second from top is another AVG pilot over Hengchow with 10 kills.

...the top 10 is dominated by the AVG over Hengchow, in fact. Nates = good practice!

I think the Malaysian campaign is pretty much going my way so far given the ultimate outcome is not in doubt. I've been lucky in that he has been lax in stationing Bettys on Malaysia to pin down any transports - he's seen my fast transports at least twice by Mavis patrol now, but doesn't seem to realise whats going on. He has Sallys and Oscars positioned on Malaysia to grind down my ground forces instead.
This is surely a big mistake on his part. Though I suppose an early-ish evac of Malaysia will mean he can proceed to other targets in good time.

Burma worries me, I see the Imperial Guard and one other unknown unit, figure a division, in theatre now approaching Rangoon. And I have... almost nothing, just a handful of Blenheims and Fortresses to stop/slow him. The Chinese are on the way but they won't be in theatre for literally months. I am mentally writing Mandalay off, unfortunately. I will harass with bombardments and fast transports aimed at cutting supplies, but this is no more than irritation it seems to me, and costly irritation possibly at that.
I still have not committed any of my Indian armoured units to Burma, that might be a mistake I suppose. But I'm hanging fire yet to see what the score is later in the war. Akyab has seem a few tankers/AKs pop in with supplies and fuel, I might attempt to hold Akyab with that armour and some Malay units possibly, but I'm aware its a potential deathtrap (and Dacca is good enough pretty much) and am undecided.

The US is slooooooooooowly getting its act together. But its painful to wait for the giant to awaken. The USN is suffering from a lack of DDs and a lack of sealift. Impatient to see Airacobras stationed at Port Moresby but it just can't be done it would appear. At least not safely, Jap subs are on the prowl in that area and I am short on escorts. Very short.

Well, the combat report looked hideous as Bettys and Nells out of Bangkok do what they do best.

The actual damage wasnt very nice, but was not nearly as bad as the combat report implied.
Any evac of Malaysia by surface ships is history. I got 2 base forces out though, which is good. Gonna have to use Lodestars to evac the rest - to Sumatra, unfortunately.

The RN is regrouping at Trimcomalee to lick its wounds. Assuming it gets that far. The AVG is providing CAP for the escape but at least some RN ships will be in Betty range for another turn. AVG morale is good but fatigue is 20+ now, but they are flying anyway before they get a rest.

Moulmein is surrounded and surrenders, the troops there a writeoff. A bad day.
Two DMs are torpedoed off Midway, and I need those DMs badly to mine the Central Pacific, so thats even worse.

Oddly enough CLs Dragon and Durban now have lots of damage that wasn't there last turn, so it looks like they were Bettied after all. One of them has float 70 and likely will not make it, the other one should though. CA Exeter is still not showing any damage so I guess that cruiser at least really did get off scot free.

The AVGs top ace at Hengchow now has experience 99!

Not much in the way of new plans. Shifting around some transports in Australia with a view to gathering up baseforces in pointless locations (...Tasmania) and putting them where they might be of assistance (Brisbane, currently with aviation support 0 due to an oversight on my part.).

I'm tempted to prod at Baker Island at some point to remind him I'm here, which is the very tip of his Empire in the Pacific. But given his CVs sortied from Truk a little while ago... might be foolish.

Today sees another PT boat raid on an enormous convoy of his unloading at Vigan. One PT boat is lost in exchange for a torpedo into an AK and another into an AVD.
...all I can say is, PT boats kick some serious ass. I should've started these raids earlier.

The IJN bombards Rabaul, he is finally moving south. Only cruisers so far. The Aus navy is at Port Moresby now, some US cruisers are rendezvousing there. Repulse is almost at Sydney but will be being fixed for a month and so cannot be used to intervene at this early stage.

Deadlock in Malaysia still, the crawl up to Burma continues. Rangoon's RAF HQ has evacuated over land, with a single Bde. The remainder will fight, delay... and die. The RAF in Malaysia is spent - there is one stringbag left. Dutch torpedo bombers are moving into range now to keep the pressure on.

Another bad day. The KB appears - off Noumea. How it got there past the Catalina screen I dont know, but there it is.
Half the Aussie navy gets wiped off the face of the earth. I saw his CVs leave Truk but I figured he was finally moving on Rabaul, I didnt expect him to suddenly teleport past Rabaul and hit Noumea. Ah well, such is life. The main forces are at Port Moresby and Auckland so its just as well he didnt he didnt hit PM or I'd be really scragged.

A gamble shock attack at Manila fails, as a 2nd division turns up on the day they attack.

And the Dutch torpedo bombers dont fly.

In short, bah.

The PT boats at Manila are given orders to sortie again, all air assets in Malaysia are gathered at Singapore and set on naval attack, the US CVs thank their lucky stars they are at Auckland and not Noumea, and a lot of single AK TFs are raised in San Diego to resupply all this little islands in the Pacific I still hold, one 7000 supplier each.

The promised attack from Singapore goes off without a hitch. The AVG tags along to make sure that his fighters dont interfere, and he eats torpedo.
Thunderstorms at Singers predicted, but I'm planning on having another crack at those APs while I have the chance regardless. And then rest probably.

Elsewhere... reconnaisance noticed a cruiser/AP force headed for Amboina from the east. It has taken me two days to bring 8 Dutch torpedo bombers to Amboina, but they are now there. Better, my light forces allocated to the DEI are waiting for him - Houston, Tromp, Java et al. Four DDs are speeding to Amboina at max speed to reinforce, but I dunno if they will get there in time. I suspect the Japs outgun me too, recon spotted 2 CAs so thats more firepower than I got already.

But I will fight regardless. The torpedo bombers might be able to finish off stragglers, and a surface fight will stop him from bombarding.

My PT boats might be at Vigan too next turn. Between Amboina, Vigan and Singers I expect an eventful new years eve. [:D]

Bit of a HoI2 induced timeout, but we're back!
Amboina goes badly. The Dutch torpedo bomber pilots (morale 94) sit around in their windmill while the Japs annihilate the Dutch/USN force trying to protect them. Bah. Though Kongo takes heavy damage from 8" shells fired from Houston before she sinks. I know Kongo was really a battlecruier not a BB but thats not very impressive. Maybe fog of war?
The PT boats get surprised and butchered at Vigan.
Incidentally I was surprised in every surface engagement today. The one at Amboina annoys me, as the incoming task force was tracked by naval search planes for 2 days before the engagement itself. If the admiral was not killed aboard Houston, I would have put him up against a wall and shot him for incompetence myself.

He draws his navy back from Malaysia now. The reinforcements are presumably on station now, which means Malaysias days are numbered. Lodestars are evacuating the Georgetown refugees now the navy cant get close.

Burma - he began to siege Rangoon on 1/1/42

China - Yenen fell due to my own incompetence, rest stalemate, supply situation good so far - lots of supplies flown in from Mandalay/Dacca/Ledo, almost a daily aerial Burma road

Amboina gets reinforced. The Dutch pilots in their torpedo bombers continue smoking dope and playing with windmills instead of putting torpedoes into Japs to my -extreme- displeasure. I hate it when an enemy move is telegraphed well in advance and assets moved to make him pay - and then those assets just sit on their arse and let him get away with it.

Much sub action today also. Mavises are on ASW duty based out of Malaysia now. Clearly the continual attrition is annoying to him. Excellent. [:D]

Some decisions of strategic import are finally being made, rather than me responding at a tactical level to what he does.

A squadron of Fortresses which were at Batavia are moved to Dacca, so there is a heavy bomber strength of about 40 Forts there now. This is to inflict pain on him in Burma.

A Kiwi brigade - maybe two Kiwi brigades if transport capacity permits - is being scraped up at Auckland and sent to Lunga. Two US CVs will escort. A bit risky I suppose, but I know where the Jap carriers are - in Truk, with baby KB east of Amboina. A submarine screen is in position south of Truk and Catalinas at Rabaul should alert me if they sortie. The US CVs won't be lingering, soon as the Kiwis are away they are pulling back to Auckland.
A small Aussie brigade is being scraped up from Brisbane to be parked at Gili Gili as well. I'd love to move some Aus divisions to Rabaul but political points do not permit.

At a tactical level - USS Narwhal got hit by Kates on ASW duty 60 miles from Truk and is on 70 flotation damage. Rabaul might be too far away...
and a US CV is sailing from San Francisco, without escort, to Pearl Harbour. There aint no DDs around, and none arriving any time soon, so unfortunately she's going naked. The waters there seem safe, but who truly knows.
The AVGs ranks are getting thinned, although the kill ratios are pretty incredible. I might have to have them pull back to India for R&R and replacements. The one third of the AVG in Singapore is doing fine but Singers has been quiet now he has them bottled up.
The unit at Lae recon assures me is an SNLF unit, so I need not be paranoid about bombers being based there just yet. 20 Hudsons now at Port Moresby should suppress the small airfield there even if bombers do appear.

Been a delay as my opponent has been basking under the Maui sun, his debt to society paid in full.
Lucky git.

At Amboina he has the luck of the gods. Bad weather stops the torpedo bombers from taking off. The T.IVs have had a window of about 3-4 days to punish him now, and they have proven absolutely woefully inadequate, either they dont take off or rain stops play. The Martins and Catalinas have been pulled now, I'm gonna leave the T.IVs for a round. He did a deliberate attack that got nowhere, I assume he'll stand em down tomorrow and let their disruption from landing fade a bit.

Aside from that business as normal today, various plans coming along but nothing new.

SS Shark is pulling back btw, no need to really tempt fate.

Oo Oo Oo things are going on!

Catalinas at Rabaul spot two Jap TFs, one just leaving Truk, and one BB TF only 180 miles away. Looks like something significant is going on - presumably the invasion of Rabaul.
Given Rabaul has not been reinforced, I imagine it won't be lasting very long.

Port Moresby has 20,000 supplies and has been reinforced with 2 Aussie tank brigades. A problem in that theatre is aircraft, currently the Aus airforce is all there is - and Hudsons and Wirraways are of marginal value especially against ships.

2 US CVs are still at Auckland where transports are playing around, they are gonna stay there for a while it would seem. 2 US CVs vs the KB = two sunk US CVs. If he gives me a chance though I'll still dump those Kiwis on Lunga.

Elsewhere BB Mutsu is sighted just north of Borneo. Looks like he is moving on Pontiniak perhaps. Torpedo bombers are moved to hopefully put a fish into something expensive, but its only harassment really at this stage of the game.

There is a lot of Allied force being concentrated around Canton Island, Bolos and fighters mostly, with a division, coastal batteries and a big CentPac aviation unit too. A single US CV and a fairly sizable cruiser force are in the area too.
In the fullness of time I'm going to remind Baker Island that its in Fortress range, maybe get him to divert some resources to the Central Pacific.

Not much of interest combat wise today, Malaysia and PI are getting slowly squeezed to death in the Jap vice but I am helpless and they are just gonna go under in the end no matter what I do.

Of greater interest is the fact that Rabaul was bombarded, as calculated - and all Jap TFs in the south pacific have disappeared!

Bugger. The Catalina pilots are disciplined for losing the KB, again! Panic attacks in Auckland as the CVs stay put, more panic attacks in Noumea as some transports lingering there head for the Aus coast where there is some LBA - dont want a replay of the End of the Aussie Navy after all. The subs diverted to mine Lae and Rabaul are very near now, and put on full speed. Port Moresby gets reinforced with some Beauforts.
The funtoys should be laid in a few days. Be great if it happens at the same time as invasion - ok, 12 subs worth of mines isnt so hot but you never know. Maybe he didnt bring a sweeper, and I'll take what i can get.

AKs at Akyab get mullered by Betties and Zeroes flying from somewhere so far distant they are off the screen. Luckily they had disgorged their contents, but it does mean no more transport missions to Akyab.

Ominous quiet elsewhere. Subs surround baby KB, I dont think he realises just how many I vectored onto him - at least six or seven.

He better not sail east.

No sign of the KB or those BBs who bombarded Rabaul. Rabaul currently has 8 Beauforts and a squadron of Catalinas there, very bare.
There is no Allied naval search capacity between Rabaul and Auckland. If he goes straight south past Lunga I'll not see him till he hits New Zealand, if he keeps on going that way. So I'm blind, in short. I might possibly move those US CVs out of Auckland even, if I don't see the KB for a few days.

I don't like not knowing where his carriers are. I was incautious before and lost a lot of cruisers as a result, this time it'll be CVs getting lost if I am foolish.

Baby KB - least so I assume. Snapper keeps going for DDs though. I'd larf if his CVs did a runner and left behind some of their escorts as a hunter-killer TF. That'd be just typical.
Tempted to have some cruisers rush this TF, its not moved for days. Might be able to force a surface engagement. If Baby KB moved on I'd get away with it too.
...but my risky cruiser tactics have resulted in the loss of almost all Allied cruisers in the region, I'd hate to have my US reinforcements to the DEI promptly nuked by CVs.

Missed a day, but only because nothing of interest happened during it. Just some skirmishing in the air and recon, nothing more than that.

Today, though... the KB showed up and nailed some TKs at Noumea. (And narrowly missed those AKs I had leg it a few days ago - the panic is rising as there are 45 Fortresses on board those AKs, I hope to god they slip away).
I dont think it is the full KB mind, only ~200 aircraft. Maybe he has split up his CVs?

A wolfpack of 12 subs surrounds Amboina and his suspected aircombat group. I want something expensive.

And in other news BB Kongo sinks near Truk, to my amazement. Kongo ran into my cruiser force at Amboina and devastated it, but took about half a dozen 8 inch shells from CA Houston (now sunk). Apparently Kongo is pretty flimsy for a battlecruiser, because those half a dozen shells did it in. Kongo didnt go down alone either, CL Jintsu sunk near Truk yesterday too, another victim of those deceased US cruisers at Amboina.
...the naval kill score is now only 2 to 1 in favour of Japan, with 3 Jap BBs down.

Canton Island bristles with aircraft. Shame its only got a rating 3 airfield, too small for Forts... Suva is about to get a base force originally intended for Noumea, and then we'll have some hopping from Canton to Suva. I also got a single engineer aviation unit, a small one, intended for Espiritu Santo. My blindness in the South Pacific annoys me, I want to finally get some Catalinas down there, and with the support required.

The Jap CVs at Noumea are headed east towards Suva. About the last direction I would have expected. Probably the direction I like the most (except north back to Truk of course).

Not sure why he did this. Looks like it was a raid. But given I think he split the KB up that seems a bit risky on his part, raiding with a smaller CV force. But then it is only Jan 42, I guess he knows I'm not going to attempt to seriously contest him.

The British nuts are in a vice at Malaysia - the non Singapore units will surrender, I predict, within 4-5 days. As Singers will be decidedly bare after that, I don't give the place much more than a week after that.
I don't mind. His aggressiveness has cost him 3 BBs, which he wont be getting back, and gained him just a few weeks of time. I'll take that exchange.

I suppose he did it to make sure Noumea was clear so I couldnt disturb any Rabaul invasion. I would have thought Noumea was too far to intervene anyway.

The only things that will be intervening, assuming they get to do so without being flattened by BBs/airfield attacks, are 16 Beauforts and 30 odd Hudsons. Not enough.
