AI Landing while being attacked?

Post by Paradox »

Okay this may be just me but I think it's a huge mistake to have fighters locked up in the circuit when enemy fighters are either attacking the the carrier or attacking their fighters while they are waiting for landing clearance. Even if they are 'Bingo' fuel or 'winchester' they should still try to protect themselves. Recovery can come later if necessary. But to just sit there anf be picked off by the enemy because you're waiting to land seems wrong in my opinion. If it was me I'm breaking formation and attacking. They do still have guns available to use in defense right?

Anyone have a take on this?

Also how many mines are in a minefield? I noticed that if you send out fighters to attack a minefield that only one of the icons disappears. And you can't have two or three groups of fighters attacking at the same time because as soon as that one icon drops the other sorties turn back and head for home even though there are still icons for that group still active? Anyone know what that's about?

Well, I have no idea about an immediate solution, especially regarding AI behaviour, but the solution to this problem MAY lie in a new ship type, which would be useful in many cases: a tug, well maybe two a small one (maybe LCA) and a large one (Capital Unit).
Those could be used to recover fighters and to tow capships, for example disabled via engine shots.
They could also be used as cargo carriers.
Unfortunately docking procedures are currently not possible, and simply "pushing" ships around is damaging both vessels, which would be fatal for a fighter that has been in combat and has run out of fuel.[:(]

You are right that a Tug would make sense and be a great asset. Also I wouldn't want to be the poor slob that ran out of fuel either. LOL!

yeah altho if i rember right you still have your thrusters so in theory you could land i may have to try that [:D] altho thats for a player not AI, ai would probebly just sithere and spin.

Tugs for recovery of Fighters would be great as well as the ability for fighters to break of their landing corse when they are under attack.

Just tested you can land with the manuvering thrusters and a lot of time. kinda funky landing backwards with no fuel i landed backwards as thats the way my ship was drifting at that time and dindt want to loose speed by turning

Yes it is silly, as defending the CV and themselves should be a priority, instead of laying there in the "fighter jam" waiting for their turn to begin the approach!
At the very least they should park themselves near the nearest PDB gun!

How many mines? As many as you like. When they say there is "minefield A" for instance, all mines in that "mine squadron" (minefiled) will be called A1, A2 and so on...).
The procedure is the same as for creating a fighter squadron.

As for AI behaviour (fighter and capital included), there are some issues regarding the way they act. Some of those points have been raised before.
Let's wait for version 4.5 (wich seems to be coming soon) to see if they have improoved AI behaviour.

Another thing that pains me is that there are no escape pods, neither for fighters nor for capital ships.

Yeah...you know...the other day I was flying in my trusty F36 or whatever its called...I got jumped by like 3 flights of bad guys and BOOM...I reached for the eject handle, but nothing...now I'm permanently pushing up daisies...[8D]

Paradox,

When it comes to attacking mines, this is what I have found helpful. I presume that because you can order multiple flights around you are the carrier commader.

First, only send a package of 2 fighters with rockets. I don't know why, but a four-ship will always turn back after the first mine is down. Second, it helps if you have that ship selected in the orbit cam view and give it some additional guidance on which mine to attack next. I would NOT recommend giving it any target in a different mine group. This seems to upset the pilots somehow. Also, remember that the rockets fire in salvos, so you don't get many shots with them, but they will also engage with guns. The short and medium range missiles will also be emplyed against mines as well. However, once any member of the flight goes Winchester, they return as a group.

Hopefully this will help.

What do they do, come back and attach you?[;)]
