Massing air units in a few HQ's

Post by Robned »

I've always played as the Axis and massed my air units in the HQ's with the highest leader rating. Thus I've got about 6 or 7 HQ's that I use, the rest just sit back unused well behind the lines. I also mass the ground units this way. I figure let me take advantage of the stong leaders. I keep the HQ's well garrisoned with ground troops to avoid shatter. What am I losing by using this approach??

You are loosing supplies and order points (?). Each HQ only has soo many supplies and order points. When you order a unit to move, you need some points, attack, some points, air strike, some points. If you mass all you units in a few HQ (a-la Russian) then you get fewer actions per turn and fewer options than if you used all your HQ.

Also, If they Russians ever do an air strike at you HQ, you'll looose many more planes.

That's how I do it too...

What you want to do is have most of your HQ's near the front, close enough to do special supply. Switch your units to the secondary HQ's, give them the special supply, then switch them back to the fighting HQ--the one with the good leader and the air support. The disadvantages are that you're less likely to get reinforcements because you'll have more units further from HQ, and you may run out of OP points just from movement and attacks.

Yes, I know it's "gamey" but I think it makes up for not having a more general air superiority model (i.e. nearby air units intercepting raids on other HQ's).

By concentrating your air units in one HQ you reduce your losses in the event of an air raid, because you'll be able to stop the bombers from reaching the target.
