LOS question

Matrix Games and Simulations Canada combine and completely remake two classic NATO vs. Warsaw Pact wargames into a new classic. Based on the original wargames “Main Battle Tank: North Germany” and “Main Battle Tank: Central Germany”, Flashpoint Germany is a new grand tactical wargame of modern combat. Every aspect of modern grand tactical warfare is included, from advanced armor, air and helicopters to chemical and tactical nuclear weapons. Step into the most dangerous war.. . that never was.

LOS question

Post by Rogue187 »

is it just me or is the LOS confusing? I know that certain terrain types block LOS at certain distances but sometimes I will have two tanks in the same type of terrain (usually mixed) and one guy sees the bad guys while the other guy just sits there. I just got the game so maybe its a noob thing. Just wanted to know reactions/solutions to this problem. Thanks.

Most games greatly simplify spotting and state that if the enemy is within a certain range and the terrain is favourable then it is spotted without further effort.

Flashpoint has a somewhat more detailed model which goes on to include the current orders of the unit (some are less "tactically aware" than others) and things like fatigue and combat stress. Similar units in similar terrain might not necessarily have the same spotting range.

Further, target units have a 'spottable range' in the sense that they can be small and obscure and just won't be noticed from as far away as larger units. It depends on how many vehicles there are, whether they are moving or not, current orders, and probably some more things - memory fails me!

I would suggest that you check the rules under sighting range and spottable range and see what is written there. These rules all came from the core SimCan design and were a case where having a computer to do all the minute calculations really was an improvement over the old board game manual calculations.

Cheers, Rob.

Thanks Rob. I guess it will take some getting used to, I am still trying to read all of the rules. 114 pages takes a while to print out. I am guessing from your posts that you were involved in the creation of this game. I am not sure how many people playing this game play World War II Online, but is the sound of the Bradly main gun the same sound effect as the Vickers?

Yes, I was a little involved. Didn't do the sound effects though. I just begged and pleaded for 8 months and then suddenly they were there! Generally I am very happy with them but I don't actually know their provenance.

They are all standard wav files though so you can substitute any others you like and use them instead if you prefer.

Cheers, Rob.
