Bestest Valentine's Ever

Matrix Games and Simulations Canada combine and completely remake two classic NATO vs. Warsaw Pact wargames into a new classic. Based on the original wargames “Main Battle Tank: North Germany” and “Main Battle Tank: Central Germany”, Flashpoint Germany is a new grand tactical wargame of modern combat. Every aspect of modern grand tactical warfare is included, from advanced armor, air and helicopters to chemical and tactical nuclear weapons. Step into the most dangerous war.. . that never was.

Bestest Valentine's Ever

Post by themattcurtis »

The wife and I are getting smallish presents for each other this Valentine's. And since she knows what I like, and is too swamped with work to try and surprise me, she's taken the route of "just tell me what you want this year."

So....on Friday....I'll be a'DLing Flashpoint Germany!!

I'm all kinds of excited. I've been wanting to beef up my modern wargame collection. Yeah, I'm a WW2 buff but I have the CM series, SPWAW, Uncommon Valor, Strategic Command, and some old Campaign series stuff, so it's time to branch out as my only other modern game right now is Tacops. Which is sweet, but I want another title.

I do have a coupla questions (not to beat anything into the ground):

I read on another board that a 1.01 patch is coming out to address the AI's tendency to run over its own mines. Is this still scheduled for sometime over the next week?

And is there an ETA on the update to address infantry?

They're not deal breakers, as I'm going to get the game with the assumption that the developers will make good on their commitment to add these touches to the engine. But I'm still curious as my gaming budget is limited and I wanna make sure I'm makin' a smart move.

Other than that, just wanted to say Hi. I'll be looking for pbem opponents with enough patience to break in a noob and I have a tendency to post everything as an AAR (part and parcel of writing for a living).

Regards
Matt

The 1.01 patch is looking good, I think releasing it within a week is still likely. It does address the AI minefield issue along with a host of other minor bugs and a few new features.

Infantry in this game is done according to the design, in that the game is about mechanized modern combat so the infantry squads are rolled into the mechanized infantry platoons and get additional weapons and abilities when stationary/dismounted. The new update makes them a bit tougher to kill when dismounted and adds the (dis) that should have been in the unit inspector for each weapon that's only available for dismounts (in other words, you don't get to use them while the APC is rolling along at 40kph).

With that said, we do plan on separate infantry counters at some point, but I can't promise when that will be or if it will we part of an update or an expansion or sequel oriented more towards infantry combat. That all remains to be decided.

Regards,

- Erik

Glad to hear that infantry are covered in some fashion. I can wait on separate counters as long as the mechancis of the game represent the idea that they're there.

And yeah, the woman's a keeper. 1.) she's surrendered any hope of getting rid of my wargames 2.) she's got the same sense of humor as me (which tickles us to death even if other folks get overwhelmed and 3.) at 30, she's kept her figure from high school!!! Thank God for the local gym[&o]

OH NO!!!! [:D]

I've cleaned up my act since my frosh year of High School (4years of wrestling to acquaint me with weights, 60+ extra pounds on my frame to hide the ribs, wire rims to replace those flexible plastic monstrosities my parents gifted me with, no more zits, the braces are ancient history and a reeallll short hair has replaced the white man's fro that used to send the girl's running). I look like anyone else, now. But when we look back at our yearbooks we both realize she's the kind who never would have spoken to me, or stopped her boyfriend from tossing me in a locker

But I fooled her, didn't I ??? Fooled her into saying "yes" and then got her pregnant --- TWICE

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

JEEEZUS I can't wait til the reunion. Where'd Matt go, huh? huh?

I too am glad to hear the mech infantry is being changed to model it as a more tougher target after its deployed and / or dug in. I think a separating counter for the grunts when they disembark their wagon would be nice but I'm really not complaining. As I've been saying in my other posts: I'm liking this game the more I play it. Its encouraging to see the developers are continuing to improve what it think is a great start.

By the way, Do you have a list of fixes for this patch?

I told my wife before we had kids: "I either throw dollar bills[;)] or wargame...period. Now at 40, and two kids, she is starting to lose her figure a little [looks over shoulder] but on our 20 year[X(] anniversary i got an Alienware PC[:D]. Women like ours are rare indeed, now if she would just stop nagging me to stop buying Matrix
products and go play Golf i'll have it made[:'(].

What a nice thread!

Yes, the minefield issue is well taken care of. It probably wasn't noticable before but friendly units slow down drastically when crossing known minefields and at this scale there are often clear lanes left through them etc to use. Accidents still happen of course but it is supposed to be reasonably safe. It is still jarring to see though in the game. I changed the movement cost weightings now so that units will always go around known minefields unless there is absolutely no other alternative. Even to my eyes it looks a little more intelligent.

Erik claims I have fixed a "host of minor bugs" but I wouldn't call them bugs so much as "incremental design improvements". For the first time in quite a while I am not under the gun to just finish it and can entertain the idea of fiddling around a bit to make the little things go just a bit better. Before I had to rigorously exclude everything unless a playtester complained or it was a crash bug otherwise the game would *never* have shipped. Now I have my freedom again.

An example of what I am talking about is that I noticed that while artillery barrages have 3 possible intensities, the list of animations is winnowed down for brevity to usually just one or two misses if no hits are obtained. I'm in the process now of changing that to 1 miss for harassing (0x) fire, 2 misses for suppressing (1x) fire and 3 misses for neutralizing (3x) fire. That way the defender can see how much weight the attacker is attaching to that particular mission - possibly very important info and one that staff on the receiving end try to pay careful attention to in real life.

Cheers all, Rob.
