Order of Battle Correction

Post by Iron Duke 42 »

I just purchased BIN and opened the "Overlord Scenario", and immediately noticed an error in the starting units for the Allies. The allies begin with just the Paras on the map at the start of the game. The US has 6 units shown, 4 with the 82nd and 2 with the 101st Abn. Unfortunately, one of those given for the 82nd is the 325th Glider Regt. (closest to the beaches in the NE). This unit should be shown as the 502nd PIR of the 101st Div. not the 325th Glider Regt. of the 82nd. Yes, I know the 325th was a glider regiment with the 82nd, but it was not involved in the first wave of the parachute drops. Also the 502nd of the 101st was involved, and is conspicuous by its absence, not to mention the placement of the 325th corresponds to the drop zone for the 502nd. I highly recommend that this be corrected in the next patch. For those of us interested in historical accuracy, it brings into question other aspects of the game when something as important as the Order Of Battle is incorrect from the beginning.

I'm still very much looking forward to starting my first full game, as I think the game system, from what I've seen already, looks great.

Duke,

What you're seeing is a live drop of 6 PIRs & 325 GIR. Units will not be in the same location every opening[:D]

Suspect your 502 PIR took a bad drop and is accounted for on the KIA list[X(]

327 GIR of 101st Airborne arrives by sea movement as it did historically.

JSS,

Thanks for your response. After posting my e-mail I actually sat down to start playing the game. After a couple of starts, I noticed the starting positions and conditions of the Paras was never the same and came to the conclusion you provided. I was about to post a retraction when I saw your reply, for which I am grateful. Like I've said I've just started with the game and have much to learn. But I am enjoying it immensely so far. [:)]

I will say they still have an error in the OB. Not represented at all is the 401st Glider Regt. Which was also attached to the Paras for the Normandy operation. As the 401st was actually divided between the other two Glider Regts., maybe this has been taken into account by increasing the strength of each of the other GIR's. Again, I haven't gotten into it deep enough to be certain.

Again, I thank you for your response and look forward to future correspondence. Happy gaming!!!![:D]

A final note on US glider regiment organization for Normandy. These units were only 2 battalions strong intially because of the shortage of gliders. Both the 325 and 327 regiments were "rounded out" for Overlord by the breaking up of the independant 401 regiment, and they stayed as 3 battalion units for the rest of the war. In the 327, the 1/401 battalion was allowed to keep its number, and it appears under this id in later reports by the 101 airborne division, even though it functioned as the "third battalion" of that unit. In the 325, the 2/401 took on the identity of the 3/325 for the rest of its service.

Well, that clears it up for which I thank you. I've always been a big believer in historacity over simplicity of game play in Historical simulations and my faith is restored here. Happy gaming. I'll look forward to future communications.
