Projectile cannons
Projectile cannons
Talking to Pheagey last evening, I have thought of a new concept for weaponry on turret design ships.
What if we putted autocannons or mass drivers in those double,triple or quadruple barrels instead of energy weapons?
Perhaps even the Zolon shields wouldn't stop them as they'd qualify as fighter launched missiles for game purposes.
In fact, not even PDB guns would have stopped them and the ammo would be cheap (chunks of metaln at the very least, as not aerodynamics are needed in vacuum...
Think about it guys!!![&o]

... and most important...
... don't ge complicated with too much physics here. I mean something simple like directors calculating where the ship will be at a given moment and firing those projectiles (wich can be armour peircing as well...). Perhaps the could work like "beefed-up" space fighter rockets, on a larger scale!

RE: ... and most important...
The only real problem with mass drivers is the reaction. As the shell gets bigger, the guns lose the turret. Then the ability to move up/down. Soon, the ship will have to be built around said mass-driver.
Good idea though, and the pd would, depending on how they track targets, have an easier or harder time with it.

would not want annoying things like facts and the laws of physics busting it down eh:)

You could alwas have those pesky laws kick in on "realistic" only ya know. But that would be a pain to implament, and we don't want that do we? [;)][:D]

RE: Projectile cannons
Diab,
Creating them is simple. See the pics. For a ship the size of my Yamato, I put each projectile at 0.5 tons, with an outrageous acceleration. (70+ klicks in under 4 secs.)
I went for a relative balance with stock SS ships. I only have one turret up.
See the next pic for more info.

RE: Projectile cannons
In this shot, the target is a Spectre class, head-on, with full shields. The damage is about 10% after one salvo of two projectiles (imagine the punch coming from all 16 guns [:D]). The effects have been lined out for now as I can't imagine what a hypersonic, magnetically charged half-ton ball would look like coming out of a barrel that big. There's no explosion, no trail, nada. I think.
The reaction of the target ship is awesome. I went to orbit cam on the Spectre and watched as my basically invisible shots went home. Went right through the shields and hits with an awesome CRUNCH and physically knocks the ship off course. I messed around with this (rapid salvo action) and literally forced the Spectre to go belly-up in relation to me. Needless to say, he died quick.
The intermediate explosion is my PDB finishing off some incoming torps.
Anyway, ask and ye shall receive.

RE: Projectile cannons
It would look like a hypersonic .5 ton ball duh.[8|] The magnetic charge would make a cool effect in the nebula though. I would assume that the firing mechanism is combustionless, so no firing effect needed. All you really need to draw is the projectile itself.ORIGINAL: Dragonlead

EDIT: Out of curiosity I decided to see how much KE that thing is putting out.
KE = 1/2 (M * (V * V))
KE = 1/2 (500kg * (17,500m/s * 17,500m/s)
KE = 76,562,500,000 joules
KE = 76,562,500,000 watts
KE = 76,562,500 kilowatts
KE = 21,769,263.58 tons
KE = ~21.77 megatons
For a comparison, the absolute maximum damage a photon torpedo from ST does to it's target is 32 megatons.

Duken,
You got me on the math. I was a military history major for a reason!
In your opinion, is this a comparable level of oomph? Understrength?

RE: Projectile cannons
Honestly, that was all google and the windows calculator. The oomph is probably too much for Starshatter, blowing a Spectre away with a salvo or two. If the 16 guns each have two barrels, they would do 160% hull damage; if each gun has a barrel, it's still doing 80% hull damage.ORIGINAL: Dragonlead

excuse me for butting in [;)]
If you are trying to even remotely approximate RL[:D]
Your accelleration is way over the odds (yours is 17500ms)
something in the range of 2000ms to 7000ms velocity is probably more "realistic"
Of course Mass Drivers/Rail guns dont accellerate once they have left the weapon.
So if you are using the missile/drone def you would have to cheat a average accell rate over the life of the projectile to end up with that sort of velocity midlife for the shot(or someother point)
Of course if this is Sci-fi so any thing can happen[:D]
But SS stock ships have atleast "some" relation to accurate physics

RE: Projectile cannons
Appreciate the feedback. There are only 16 guns in 8 double-barrel turrets. I did a full conversion (as opposed to the test, where I only had four turrets up). I took a Courageous-class cruiser at 74km. He got 5 full salvoes (16 rounds times 5 salvoes) before he went belly up. The neat part about these mass drivers is the effect they have on the target ships. Beams and bolts do not deflect the ship's movement, unless you get a lucky hit on a flight comp or something. These KKV MOVE THE WHOLE SHIP! The first cruiser I killed got spun 360 degrees before he died. It was awesome to watch!![:D]
I took out his other two ship mates as well and it took 2 minutes 40 seconds to do it.
I do compensate to some degree. Given the split front design of my ship, the port side guns have only a 2 or 3 degree right traverse and the same is true on the opposite side. This means that I can only get a full broadside dead ahead. Once they spread out, it reduces my effective "throw weight". Also, the turrets traverse VERY slowly. It is possible to miss. As the captain, you have to make sure the turrets are tracking before you toss your spit balls.
Again, thanks for the feedback.
