Hopefully you can shift assets to the Baker Island area really quickly after Mouse Trap is done. Then you can strengthen your defences there. :) watch out for those B-17s though.. they can be murderous to your APs..

LAE DRAMA

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

My worst nightmare became reality.
From Cooktown today 200 b-17s took off and annihilated my full-of-planes- Lae AF
57 planes were destroyed on the ground.
only 2 planes shot down by zeros and just 3 by flak.
At 5,000 fts those monsters are unstoppable.
Runaway at 73 damage. Moved back all the bombers at Rabaul and moved 2 more zero daitais. Hopefully tomorrow it's going to rain so i hope i'll have some time to recover the runaway. now 55 zeros should be on cap tomorrow...let's hope it's enough at least to cause some damage.....But Mouse Trap has not started with the best wishes[:(]
What if 200 heavy bombers get over my Fleet? Disaster..... but now i'm too far beyon the red line. Gotta go on and hope

RE: LAE DRAMA

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Is there a way to stop 200 fortress in May 42 for Japan? Till now my zeros prooved not to be so effective against those monsters. And now my fears for the invasion fleet are growing up. 100/120 carrier based Zeros should always be on CAP above my ships, but if he brings his 2 CVs and if some more medium bombers will be in range from cooktown the danger i will have to face will be great.
Now he can obliterate Buna and Lae exactly like he did with Gili gili and close those bases.Without any close air support it's going to be damned hard to knock down PM.....
I gotta say that the temptation of halting operation Mouse Trap is deeply present in my mind, but I have just viewed what he can do with his unescorted bombers to my bases and i really cannot let PM grow up and ruin my days at Rabaul.
I know that when and if i'll take PM he will pound it to dust, but better PM or Lae than Rabaul.

Probably i'll begin to use some betties and nells from Rabaul in order to keep PM under pressure.

Was my mistake, i know. I had noticed Cooktown grown up to level 5 and thought " oh, that can be a problem" but did not do anything else except for putting my 27 zeros there on 80% cap ( less than 10 took off BTW) and for my 30 oscars only 40% cap....i should have transfered more zeros there, but i was just saving them at Rabaul in order to be able to transfer 3 fresh zero daitais when th invasion will be close to PM..... However 9 zeros out of 27 it's 33%...i was just hoping for something better. Now i'm sending as fast as i can some AA there, but the AF is already pretty damaged and cannot do nothing more than putting there 50 active zeros, hoping they can at least inflict some damage ( but if i was him, tomorrow i'll strike Buna and not Lae )

Any suggestion?[&o]

2nd day of PAIN

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Fortune has turn her head away from the Empire.
Clouds all over south pacific but obviously not over Lae.
Another huge strike of fortresses and another plane grinder. No cap at all. The AF wasn't repaired during the night.100 planes destroyed on the ground with more than 40 zeros[:@]
What a bad day.
And to add another pain for the Empire, the convoys are messing up .
I really need something to boost my morale.

i guess that Lae wasn't overload with ac (size 4 x 50 ac = 200 planes allowed without penalty)?

Do you have Air HQ located in the base? enough supplies? Otherwise, dont know....

Sneak in some transports to get the remainder of your air units out. Once this starts there is no happy ending.

This is going to be the worst period for Japan since the beginning of the war....and nw i have also to think at Tarawa that risks to be isolated

Having an Air HQ is necessary in every base where you want to base more than 100 planes.

And having some transports standing next to big bases (that are under heavy range only, so don't apply to Lae) is allowing you to save airgroups from closed bases.

Also you have to send more fighters and less bombers in forward bases. 50 Zeroes will shot down a dozen B-17 (including damaged planes crashing on return) and reduce the effectiveness of the bombing.

the last 21 planes destroyed

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

At Lae the last plane has been destroyed. a total of 241 planes in 4 days. One of the most terrible period for the Empire.
I tried to catch those b-17s on the ground at night, but my brave bombers did not achieve any result....really really depressing.

The HUGE armada in the meanwhile has bypassed Rabaul. Now, with a lot of problems, it's heading towards Gili Gili Cape. 40% CAP for the moment over my ships. Every day this % will be slightly encreased

Hi, If you bomb Cooktown while the B-17 are over Lae you will not destroy any of them (except for damaged ones left behind.)
Also you need to fly recon for a while before sending bombers or they will miss they might even be unable to find the target.

Hi mogami,

No, the b-17s ply at daytime, while i launched my planes during nighttime. I know abaut the lack of recon....just had not anything that go that far execpt for bombers. BTW wanted to be a dimostrative action. At least i hoped in something like 1/2 b-17 destroyed and some more damaged.....

RE: Buna's time

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

At the moment, with my PM invasion fleet approaching Gili gili, my choice is going for PM, in order to halt him from building up forts.
My betties and Nells did a good job today but my recon says that runaway has already been brought back to 15 damage:-(
My opponent admitted that he's setting up a counteroffensive somewhere. My weakest point are at the moment: The Bali-Kendari-ambonia triangle, the Marcus-Saipan-Kwalajein zone and the Tarawa area. My entire fleet is busy with Mouse Trap and after that my major ships will need at least 2 months of R&R...so it's going to be a tough summer[:(]

The VP situation.
As you can see the numbers for planes are really bad for Japanese, and these results are costing me the 4-1 goal
