Possum6 map - 2 questions

Post by Silvanski »

Hi all, I've got 2 questions concerning the map Possum made...

-Is it possible to replace the map in the regular 3.3 version with the Possum map? The added cities and railhexes, plus the more accurate location and layout of rivers make it more attractive to use...
If anyone has ever tried this, please share your experience.

-Does anyone have a GIF or BMP shot of the blank map? It'll be my pleasure to fill in the city, river and area names, like I did on the 3.3 map... Handy for a general overview while playing...

Thanks and good campaigning!

Well, I can answer my first question myself[:D]
I just finished playing the 30 turns Case Blue scenario: me Axis vs AI-Soviets (even), with the Possum map installed in v3.3

I first didn't think it worked properly, as my Axis units all showed a "0" supply level... couldn't plot more than 2 hexes during the first turn, not even with the panzers... But the next turns all supply showed up fine, and I could start to make a swift break to Rostov and Voronezh...

I decided not to break into the Caucasus... I captured Rostov after brief but heavy fighting, and set up a solid defense line there... It was Stalingrad I was after...
I fought my wayto there with a three Panzer corps corridor, flanked by solid infantry corps... The Luftwaffe and Axis bombers did a good job in pummeling the Bolshevik hordes[8D]

The approach to Stalingrad is narrower than on the 3.3 map; as the Don is wider Southwest of the city, and seemed unable to cross, I had to burst into the city via the railline approaching from the West... speed was of the essence of course... A two prong attack, with lots of Luftwaffe support, enabled me to enter the city after three weeks of bitter fighting... Took control of the riverbanks 4 hexes to the North, and also set up a defense line south of the railline going from Stalingrad to the West... Managed to let my units entrench and rail in reinforcements. before the first snow came.. In december a brief attack by the AI-Soviets was kept under control.. but they were building up their armies... Meanwhile I kept harrasing the Voronezh and Rostov sectors with static attacks and interdictions, in order to divert some Soviet resources...
The Hungarian airforce even managed to damage the Saratov refineries... all small bits help[:D]

In the Crimea, Sevastopol fell after one week (should always happen in Case Blue) But despite several attempts, Novorrosiysk couldn't be taken, but the Kerch penisula was mine...

A draw, but I had a slight lead, having a firm grip in and around Stalingrad...

OK, this combination seems to work... Gonna try some other scenarios, and campaigns over the coming weeks, and will let you know how it went and if there are no problems...
Now I only need to get a blank map to fill in the geographical data [&o]

OK, thanks... My hunch: it involves the scenario editor?
No hurry in posting though...

if you add the possum map to 3.3, it will only work in the 1941 scenario (obwir). to copy the map data from possum to 3.3 for 1941 you must also copy the OBWIR.md from possum - all .MD files are the map data for that particular scen. it will not work if you renamed possum's obwir.md to obfb.md (1942) because it has the 1941 border, not the new 1942 border. to manually convert another map you have to start a new 2 player game in regular 3.3 (say 1942 scen), build a wall of Corps/Korps for each side facing each other at the border so that supply on the map doesn't leak to either side, and then save it (i'll use savea in this example). you then copy all 3 savea files to the directory which has 3.3 with the possum map, then restart savea there as a 2 player game. then run it for, say, 6 months to let the rail convert, save it to savea, then rename savea.md to obfb.md (erase the old obfb.md first!). and now you have the 1942 scen converted! if anything isn't clear let me know so i can clarify. and no scen editor necisary!

Thanks FL! Yes it seems clear to me...

And when I run it a couple of months, I can use F10 to check when control of the railways is complete....
Using your first method, I noticed that the controlled railhexes were according to the old map...

OK, I'll start working on it and will post my experiences...

Maybe I'm overlooking something...
I followed your instructions step by step... Then when I start the game in the directory with the Possum map, the units' positions aren't how I saved them, the supply leaks through so the Russians are directly out of supply... checking rail on F10, the rail follows the right path, but on Russian side shows a lot of openings... weird...

my guess is the korps are empty - the game automatically erases any empty korps at the end of your turn. make sure there is at least 1 unit of any type in them all before you end your turn!

Nope, that's not the case... I make sure there are korps in the units as I kow that empty units dissapear...

Gonna keep trying... I'll get it working in the end[8D]
