My very strong suggestion would be to learn to play UV (since you already own it).

It is a smaller game.

Once you learn to play UV, and if you enjoy it, then WiTP will be your piece of cake.

However, WiTP is massive...

I still have one UV game going.

In UV, there are ships at Pearl you wish you had. In WitP, you have all the ships and such and it's all on you where they are allocated.

If you are a UV player that is just waiting for better planes, then ya look one day and your F4F-3s are now F4F-4s and say, "cool!!" That is where WitP make a big leap. YOU decide when a certain squadron gets upgraded (or downgraded with the 1.5 patch). YOU decide when Northampton gets her upgrade.

I play the big scenario but there are smaller scenarios (one similar to the UV campaign) that have alot of the micromanaging turned off.

WitP is UV's BIG brother. If ya love UV, you will LOVE WitP. If you are perfectly happy with UV's scope and challenge, stick with it. If you want more than UV gives ya, get WitP. You won't be dissappointed. It's UV on crack.

OK...I'll take that advice...even thought so many people have said "Get it...NOW! You will only regret putting it off".

But I think you're right....play UV and if I enjoy it (I don't think it matters a "great" deal if you understand it...as long as it's enjoyable) then I'll get WitP....birthday coming up...so I'll have some spare cash.

I think that is wise.

Get your feet wet with UV: read the manual; learn about convoys; air groups; how to use carriers, etc...

WiTP will have a lot of the same gameplay, only on a massive scale...

I would also suggest reading a good book on the Pacific War while you are playing UV, such as John Costello's "The Pacific War". It will get you into the mood and set the stage for what is going on in the game - ie. the game designers setup the game to coincide with real historical events...

Best of luck.

I have had WITP since it came out but only recently started my first email game. It is the South Pacific scenario very similar to the ones we are playing here in UV. I don't ever think I will have any interest in a full campaign as I seriously doubt that but a small percentage of players will ever complete a game that long. Figure three time as long as a UV campaign.

The AI sucks but no big surprise in a game that complex. However, there are a lot (really lots) of nice new features that I wished were in the UV game. It is really very nice and a beautiful design. My only gripe about the South Pacific Campaign that I have started is the I really like the larger map scale that UV offers. Otherwise, it looks and feels like a winner. WITP will be even better as some shorter, user designed scenarios become available. There is not many in the original game. There is an nice editor for those who like to fiddle with things. If you like UV, you should like WITP as well. Takes a little while to learn but it really is the best out there.
