The Key of the South Pacific

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Well, another day of attrition at port Moresby and Chungking. These are the two main battle-spots.
Allie activity naval activity at Baker and a lot of recon in the northern island (pamujuro Jima Sp'?!?!?). Decided to fortify in the north and sent a group of the Guard Mixed Brigade there. Some sonias and oscars are being trasfered in the north of Japan to provide a first air defence. Yamato arrived today. She'll be ready to fight as soon as the main fleet comes back from PM.
Some problems in keeping the fleet united at PM...the trasports seem to want to fade away asap as they run away as soon as they finished their unload.
Tomorrow a general attack at PM and another one at Chunking!

Gotta finish this work fast

Forts are falling down at PM. Chunking holds for the moment.
At Lae another BIG strike by the B17s... again 175 monsters came to bomb my precious airfield. My zeros did quite good shooting down 17 of them and damaging a lot more, but didn't manage to avoid the bombing of the field. 50 runaway damage[:(]...33 Anns destroyed on the ground and 5 sallies. The bombers moved back to truk, while the zeros remained there to fight till the last man!!!!
LAe was hit hard, but he's starting to pay a high price for these raids!
the RN moved from India towards Oz.
My subs intercepted a HUGE convoys with BBs CAs and tons of DDs moving westwards of Sumatra.
45 Betties are placed at Palembang. Do not hope in a strike but ...maybe[:D]

Port Moresby FALLS!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The key of the newer defensive perimeter in the South Pacific is finally in Japanese Hands: Port Moresby fell today! 60,000 australian Pows are already being tranfered to the big prisoners camps in China, working for the Emperor!
But this was not the only news of this crucial day .
The Capitalists had begun to feel safe enough during daytime and started a HUGE bombing capaign all over the pacific theatre.
Lae was again badly hit and altough we've inflicted more than 20 A2A losses the AF has been pounded so badly that i had to close it.
What remains of my 3 zero daitais have been moved back to Wewak and Rabaul. They will try to LRCAP Lae for few days hoping to shoot down some more B-17s
in Burma Tavoy was hit hard and so Rangoon,Pagan and Mandalay. Now he knows that i cannot risk to place my planes further than Saigon, so he feels safe enough to bomb my AFs during the day.
the Big convoy of battleships was spotted again. Now 300 miles west of Sumatra.

I have to worry about 3 paricular zones, from where he can launch the counter attack:
-Wake Island is a spear in my perimeter. already at size 3 this airport can close my routes to and from Truk
-Baker and Nanomea: from here he can bomb Tarawa to dust and begin to scrumble my defences
- Timor: if he fortifies here all the SRA-DEI will be in danger

For these reasons i'm planning to keep the ball and continue my offensive campaign.
The 54th division with the 1st heavy arty unit, the sasebo SNLF and the 21st Eng. Regiment will remain at PM with a lottle base force
The South Sea Det., the 35th Brigade with the 5th eng rgt and the 7th Tank Rgt will rest and be ready to invade Nanomea atoll within 3 weeks.
The 38th and the 48th Divisions, with the 14th Army HQ,the 65th Bde,2 arty units and 2 ang regiments will form the invasion force for Wake Island. In one 40 days they will attack.

what remains of the PM invasion force will rest at truk for some weeks and will be redeployed in different theatres.

RE: Port Moresby FALLS!

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Well, this was probably the last very big operation launched by the Japanese. the allied Air Power is growing up at a incredible rate and both my combat fleet and my carriers need some rest and repair. My Crak navy pilots are in bad shape. Lost so many planes and pilots in this last southern campaign.[:(]
I would really like to get on the defence and give the deserved rest to my crews, but my perimeter is still not safe.
As said, wake island will soon be a pain for my ship routes and Tarawa will be in mortla danger as soon as Nanoumea Atoll and Baker Island will get to size 4 AF.
So, my next goals will be the following:

-Conuqer Chunking and finish the chinese campaign
-Invade and conquer Wake Island
-Invade and conquer Nanoumea atoll
-Invade and conquer Timor
-Fortify my positions in the Northern pacific Theatre

At the same time i Must speed up the operations to secure what i've conquered till now.
in the southwest Pacific i will use Lunga,Tulagi,Lae,PM,Buna and Gili Gili only for defensive purposes. The main threat at the moment for these bases are the 4Ebombers operation from Lungaville and Cooktown. I'm planning to use Munda,Shortland and Buin to defend Lunga and Tulagi, placing there some zeros and some betties and wewak and Rabaul to defend New Guinea.
Tarawa is well fortified, but the main threat are, as said, enemy's bombers.
The Mariannas are already enough fortified.
In the next 4 weeks i will add more troops to Balikapan,Ambonia,Sansapor,Macassar and Bali. I have to secure my southern perimeter ,considering the option to invade Timor something quite utopystic at the moment.
But the main goal for the next days will be to reorganize the strenght of my carrier air groups ( especially for what concerns fighters).
Looking forward to have some Tonies in my arsenal...they will fight those nasty fortresses better than the zeros, freeing up them for escort role.

The end of Phase 1

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

every day the allied air offensive encrease its power, and i'm not able to stop it, especially in Burma.
Night and day my airfields are scrumbled by his planes and i only have 2 reduced daitais of zeros in that theatre....[:(]

Today the entire Army that conquered PM has been loaded. At PM will remain the 54th division,a sasebo SNLF, 1 Heavy arty Unit and a 120 aviation support base force, along with an entire Engeneer Regiment.
The convoys will meet 60 miles west of PM and will sail with the aircover of the combined carrier fleet towards Tryk, where they will unload the troops to give them a week of rest.

At the end of May phase 1 can be considered finished.Only China is left.
Phase 2 will begin at mid June.
Now i wait for his counterattack, and i know he's going to hurt me in my weakest angle
I'm really suffering for the lack of good pilots in these days.

You must be running really low on pilots! The Chungking battle is epic. Are you going to conquer any more of China after Chungking is taken? If I was you, I'd start moving units to the Pacific and start digging in. Time for Japanese offensives is running out. Where do you think he will counterattack?

How are your CVs doing? Are your carrier pilots well trained?

Hi Alikchi,

in China i'm planning to conquer only one more base for the moment. Do not remember the name but is just above Chungking. When this will be done i will have free hands to decide what to do with those troops.

I guess he will attack in the north (paramuro Jima -Sp???) and from Baker-Nanoumea Towards Tarawa. That's why i do not want to wait for his counteroffensive. I Will keep on attacking for the next 3 months.

My CVs? Zuikaku needs some R&R (12 syst damage) and so needs the Akagi. The others are in good shape.
My Dive bombers and Torp bombers are really in good conditions! My problem is with fighter pilots....every single group has a strenght of 70% of average...which is bad. Gotta disband some carrier capable groups into them, but the exp will fall down a bit ( average 75 i guess).

I'm nearly the 4-1 ratio in VP....2350 vs.6100....with Chunking i'll be ok!

As espected Lunga is now in the line of fire. His 4E bombers are beginning to smash Henderson Field. In 2 days i'm going to have some LRCAp from Munda
BTW today was a good day for my fighters in Burma. Even if the enemy outnumbers us 20 to 1, today 17 allied bombers were shot down and none of ours.
At Chungking there has been a stop[:(]. 12,000 casualities are too much to handle. I have to rest them for a while now.....
His Subs place all over the coast of New Guinea are trying to hit my main fleet. My ASW capabilities are too low to face this threat....some more Bombers placed on ASW mission...let's hope no surprise will arise here

I'm trying to defend Burma with teeth and nails, but it's very tough to do so only with 50 zeros available.
While my fleet is getting close to gili gili, PM recieved the attention of the fortresses for the first time. But my fighters manage to protect the Airfields. The Rufes did a great job shoting down 3 b-17s!!!!![:)]

greetings...

you mentioned "partisans" in the China. Isn't good idea to bring there your low exp level ac groups and train them in the ground combat? It is fast way to do it, and it seems you don't have to afraid of allied ac in the China.

And, one more thing. I'm curious about your ac research. Do you pay attention on this or just halted and wait till arrival date comes closly? Does Oscar II arrival date moved earlier?

keep the good work!

As asked, i'll post a screen shot of my Air-production situation( i'll comment it at the end of the report)
Another quite day.
He keepd on attacking my combined fleet with his subs, but his torpedoes are prooving their Dudeness[:D]
Hi 4E bombers did not show up today in South Pacific. I think i've found a way to manage with them, or at least to cause some troubles to them
In Burma we keep on playing cat&mouse, but i need to give some rest to my zeros as the op.losses are getting higher, so this turn i did not provide any LRCAP.
It's scaring me a bit the oil/res situation. Too many damaged oilfelds in the DEI are making my life hard to provide a costant flow of res to the homeland. I hope once China will be secured i could take some oil and res there....

The A/C prodution :

As you can see i'm strongly concentrating on tonies. I should manage to get them on July instead of August. Consider that we're playing with Tanaka's mod that changes the upgrade path for the oscarsI from Oscars II to Tonies Ki.61. This should let me put in the first line of action a lot of army fighters, freeing up the navy pilots for naval warfare only.
When the ki.61 will arrive i wil swith my main researches on the Zekes.
Any comments or suggestion about this will be REALLY appreciated!

ah, Tanaka's mod. That explain why you are hardly concentrace on the Tony's. Do you know if arrival date is moved for month, can you see it in screen or arrival date stay at august 42? I have no clue....(i hardly research Oscar II, now they are at 140 rd points, but so far i can not see any progress - problably dice role failed to speed arrival)

As for a Zeke: from my experience (with O II) and other guys experience, there is no sense to research ac with arrival date more than one year later. I belive that arrival is blocked if you research ac with such arrival date. So, my suggestion would be, keep rd zeke factory for research, but dont expand/change factories for zeke r&d for now. You can do it latter, 6-8 months before historical arrival date. Then you will have bigger chance for repairing r&d and r&d should repair faster as arrival date is approaching.

Aslo, keep in mind that bigger r&d factory have bigger chance for repair rd points then smaller.
so, (120)0 rd factory will repair more rd points then 20(0)....

hope this helps...

Thanks for the input Pauk! Very useful. I believe i'll expand a bit the Sallies production and decrease a bit the sonias one.
So where should i concentrate for my researches? Jills? Oscars II?.....do not know what can be really usefull...

Nothing more to report for the 29th of May.
Heavy rains in Burma prevented the allies the usual mass bombing raids.
Some bombs hit the fields at Lunga, but nothing serious
Still resting at Chunking.
The main fleet has passed gili gili and is heading towards Truk.
b-26s striked one ML from Canton island at Baker Island
4 units spotted at Wake for 5000 men.

My opponent has announced a big operation called "SMARONATION" for June.
I have many weak spots in my perimeter...gotta pay attention!

Elaborated the two twin operations for June: SHO 1 and SHO 2 (Wake Island and Nanumea Atoll )
The invasion of Timor has been postponed to August

Oscar II certantly not, because you will upgrade outclassed O I and Nates to the Tony...

You should concetrate research on the planes which:
a) arrival date is app. one year
b) you have lot's of group of rd plane type (ie....jill, grace, frank... but there is no sence to research them yet since you are in the middle of '42.

Do you have WitP Japanese ac production sheet? (in excel)? i've found it very useful.

i can send you via e-mail if you dont have it. Just leave me your e-mail via PM.

Yes Pauk, i have it ( Thanks spooky!), thanks

I find quite hard to decide because there are several planes that won't have any real impact in the war effort.
I'd strongly need night fighters, but it's useless to research on them 'cause you have t wait unitl the dedicated group arrive and can't swicth to them manually.
So i probably concentrate my efforts over Tonies,Zekes and Betties (second version) for the next 6 months.
When i'll be able to upgrade all those nates/oscarsI groups to Tonies i'll be in a quite good position to conduct a defensive warfare.
I'll try to research something more Jills and Judy too.
Then i'll save my supplies for the upcomming meatgrinder[:(]

In the meanwhile i'll keep on training my Army fighter pilots, so that in August i will begin to send some tonies on the first line of fire( Burma,Lunga,PM)

Still thanks for your support[;)]

30th May 42

Tunderstorms all over Burma,China and Japan prevent any big air operations.
At chunking the forts are reduced to 0...FINALLY. The cost was 5500 men exchanged with 4500 chinese...not that bad.Another attempt planned for tomorrow.
At Lunga a Bombing raid made by 30 hudson was repulsed by 13 A6M3s with 3 enemy bombers shot down.
The Yamato is moving toward Truk. Will give its help in the upcomming operation SHO 1 and 2
7500 men spotted at Wake. I guess an entire Regiment of US Army....it's gonna be tough!

Another base just north of Mitikyna( Burma ) got at level 5 AF. That means that from now on more bases in China and Burma are threatened by his 4E monsters....and i fear Akyab the most...from there he can devastate everything from Hanoi to Bankok and victoria....really a pain.
He's reinforcing Nanoumea Atoll...another bad news. I caught a BIG cargo TF there today. My zeros got 3 losses vs those bastards P-40 and 4 betties did not come home.
