Can't run WIR in windows!

Whenever I try to run WIR in windows, it' gives error messaegs complaining about memory register (or something like that, I forgot) ffff-ffff. It's rather annoying! The problem appeared when I upgraded my RAM from 128megs to 256 megs. All other applications work like they should. I have even re-installed Windows (for other reasons besides WIR), and it didn't help!

I CAN run dos-WIR without any problems if I boot to dos.

Wir is 3.0, but the problem existed on an earlier version as well. Any suggestions?

I have been thinking about attempting to run WIR in Linux by using Wine (the Windows-Emulator). I almost managed to run Steel Panthers: World at War, so I might be able to run WIR. Considering that my copy of Wine is rather old, an upgrade might help there...

I am guessing here, but if it worked before the RAM increase, it sounds like in your config.sys file it is trying to create ems memory. This maps all of your RAM into segments that can take up part of your first 640k of memory, so more memory results in less in the first 640k. There is a noems command that can be added to the emm386 line, if I remember correctly. Ed probably has a better feel for this than I do, though.

That was EXACTLY the problem I had! I fixed it, and it works now! I also tweaked config.sys to give a bit more memory, so I don't get any "out of memory" erros when I work with air-groups.

It's funny that you can run out of memory with 256megs of RAM. Well, that's Windows/DOS for you...

For future reference can you tell me exactly what you changed, and what was it before?

Well, if I remember correctly, I got rid of emm386.exe entirely (just put "rem" in front of it). That gave me about 20-30kb of extra memory. I will double-check when I get back to my comp.

It's obvious that Windows has dumbed me down a bit. Back in DOS-days, I used to spend alot of time tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys, so I would have maximum amount of memory (if I remember correctly, I had 624Kb with everything on).

I never got rid of the old DOS. I run it in a separate partition using Partition Magic and run all my DOS stuff with it. Using QEMM software I have 634 out of 640 available. Bootup time is so fast, within 30 seconds I am at my prompt/dosshell.

I have memory problems too, unable to change tanks in armoured division or orders when more than 5 plans group in HQ

. I thought about a simple solution : what about a DOS boot floppy disk (not shure of the word, hope it is clear enought).

The problem is I can not remeber how I can do this, any suggestion ?

Can someone explain the way to proceed or know a web adress where it is explained ?
