1941 campaign

Post by jager506 »

Playing the Germans in 1941 campaign, I succeeded in capturing Moscow, but not Leningrad or Rostov by end-1941. My panzer spearheads keep running out of supply and I'm obliged to use like 75% of my bomber force to keep them supplied. Even so, unlike earlier versions, the panzer corps remain supply 0 and can thus advance only two hexes. After playing the previous version, I guess I've also become more cautious about ordering large-scale panzer attacks far into the Russian rear.

Just wanted to know how successful other German players have been against the AI in 1941. I'd like to hear if anyone has captured Leningrad, Moscow AND Rostov by end-1941.

Other than that, I think version 3 is great. Thanks for all the hard work and effort put in people!!!

I am playing my first game for such a long time and I 've captured Leningrad in Sep.14 and think that I will be able to capture Moscow by the end of Oct.(doubt that will hold it in blizzard). In the south, I am at Kharkov in Sep.21th. I doubt that I will capture Rostov, but it seems probably situation. It is my first game, so am cheating like hell: replay turns to verify my plotting orders and even look at the computer side. I dont think that it is possible without cheating to advance so far in the south and capture Moscow and Leningrad at the same time in 1941. Realy. Isn't it?
BTW: all possible bombers are busy to supply panzers. I've even withdrew some from other theaters.

I concentrated more on destroying the Red Army. I captured Lenningrad in Nov. and also reached Vorohnez. It's May '42 now and there was no Soviet winter offensive at all. They lost 74000 squads and 8000 tanks in '41.

Blizzard set in as i tried to encircle moscow and rostov. As moni kerr, my first objektive was to destroy the russian forces, they take losses over 100k spuads, 13k tanks, 25k guns and 13k planes till end 41. Needless to say, nearly no winteroffensive and in mid 42, the AI hasnt a usefull defence line and my Panzerdivisions are now at full strengh...

This version is definitely more difficult than the prior versions...which is good. I just finished my second match as the Axis..Leningrad fell in midNovember, Rostov fell at the same time, and Moscow was surrounded by late November, and then taken in the second Blizzard month, and held...the Russian blizzard offensive got within several hexes of Kharkov, and Rostov heldout...I delayed my 1942 offensive until after the last rain, and then the Russian AI collapsed in late August as I was within one hex of Gorky and two hexes from Stalingrad...

I agree that one must resist the temptation to drive very deep with panzer units...they then run out of supplies and have to wait for the landsers to catch up (historical...); I now prefer small kessels..isolating two or three units at at time and always keeping my armor supplied...when supply goes to zero it is more trouble than it is worth, not matter how impressive the penetration..anyway, that is my impression.

Thanks for feedback people. Guess I'll try knocking Russia out in 1942.

Speaking of campaign games, has anyone tried and won the 1942 and 1943 campaigns (playing Germany)? In an earlier version (1.3 or earlier, can't remember) I did win in 1942 but not 1943. In '43, managed to take Leningrad but couldn't progress much beyond that, so resorted to taking a "perverse" pleasure in inflicting maximum damage on Russian forces while minimizing German losses... (sad git eh?)

Going by the responses posted, I think this version of WIR is perhaps the most realistic to-date. Once again, thanks to all involved in its development.
