Soviet Navy

Post by 33Vyper »

Are there any plans to add the soviet pacific fleet to the combined mod?

I experimented a bit the other nite adding a soviet BB and a sub to Vladivostok just to see what the AI would do....which was nothing. The AI as allies never moved them (note I only played two quick turns scenario 15) and the AI as Japan never attacked them.

I did however form a TF of 1 BB and sailed it right up to Tokyo. It did engage Japanese forces sinking several aux vessels however the Japanese AF did not attack nor was any surface fleet sent to dispatch my rogue battleship.

Also the AI did not trigger the soviets to active due to the BB attack or the Japanese shooting back.

I did discover that I could not relocate the home base for the BB to a different soviet port. It refused to allow this.

I do not see a problem in adding the Soviets Navy if the above is the case...there is no trigger of war between Japan and the soviets and the only abuse would be player initiated as the soviets seemed to sail unapposed by the japanese who were honoring the neutrality agreement.

Very interesting. You are right - this does make it more feasible that Soviet naval units could be added. I understand, however, that the navy was in such bad shape that it is not realistic to add very much. I don't know much about it, though.

I once experimented with adding a Soviet AK. It worked fine, except that it was not able to load supply from Soviet ports, making it useless. I assume that this restriction goes away once the Soviets are activated, but I am not sure.

I don't expect that adding Soviet Naval units will make it into the combined mod, but you never know.

No, Lemurs makes a good point or two about this in another thread. However, despite the fact that they may not be ready for sea and have insufficient or poor crews, this should not rules out the fact that the ships themselves are legitimate targets if the Soviets become embroiled. Perhaps we could penalize them with high system damage, weapons randomly given 0 ammo, extremely poor crew ratings etc. Japan should still be able to score points for their destruction...even if they are next to useless.

Since the Soviets have bases that are on islands etc., there may be a case for adding a small number of ships and a few transports, with poor crews and system damage as you say, but it would depend on how the game mechanics treated them.

No need Cobra, we already can get all data needed, it’s detailed enough, I even have data on the most of submarine commanders…

In brief… by august ’45 Soviet Pacific Fleet had - 2 cruisers, 13 destroyers, 2 old monitors, 19 escort vessels, 78 submarines, 10 minelayers, 52 minesweepers, 42 subchasers, 204 PTs, 40 landing crafts (Lendlease vessels - 30 LCI +10 LCT), 57 transports suitable for landing operations (6000-15000tn displacement) and 1445 aircraft in 26 naval aviation units.

But in august ’45 who cares…

That's the good thing about this group, the research portion is already done, someone in the group knows what is needed.

1) I do not suggest to model Soviet navy, all I’ve said – Cobra, do not waste time gathering that info, cause I have it.
2) I think that there is no need in Soviet navy in this scenario, I agree with Lemurs on this

1) I agree with you completely, the Soviets would serve no other purpose than some easy VPs for Japan, and are not needed.

What I was getting at (based on your comment), is if someone has a new idea, we don't need people doing research, as it seems at least 1 person in the group already has that particular piece of info. I by no means was agreeing for the Soviet Navy to be put in. A Waste of time and manpower for minimal if any gain.

to be honest it was more of a 'chrome' kinda request. I remember reading in one of the other threads that someone had suggested that it might slow the Japanese down a bit...or cause them to rethink attacking the USSR. I dont think the surface vessels would do anyting except give the Japanese a few extra VPs but the submarine fleet might be useful. Adding 50-70 subs to the allied cause might give the Japanese player a few things to think about before simply going after them.

Well...just a thought anyways

With some of these ships and support from Naval Aviation did the Soviet Naval Infantry made seaborne assaults.
