Post by Muzrub »

He sent me 3 files and I saved them but how do get them to run on the game is it auto or do I palce them somewhere or what?.
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away;
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
You better watch out,
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Iraq, and i have seen
Things are not what they seem.

The files need to be placed in the WIR folder containing the executable. If the files were sent unzipped, the main save game file could get an extension added to it automatically, but it should not have one, which would cause problems. Just rename it if so. Then just open the saved game based on the file names - savea would be the a save game.

Hope this helps.

All of them. The savea file has the unit strengths and locations, and basic scenario info. The .md file is the map data file - basically who controls what, the supply levels, rail settings, etc. I am not sure what is in the .cd file.

Nah, it's not you - there must be something odd that you are missing. I don't know what steps to even give you for this. You just need to make sure the 3 files are in the WIR folder, depending on where it is installed it would vary so without knowing that I don't know where to point you for placing the files. Once they are there, and it must be the folder with the wir.exe file, you are ready to run it. Open WIR, choose Saved Games, either Both Human or Secure PBEM, and Accept Setup. What, if anything, is happening when you try this? Also, do a search for the WIR.exe file and the savea file and make sure you don't have more than one copy of the wir.exe file. You could be running a copy of wir.exe that is not where you are putting the savea files - someone else had this happen awhile ago. You search by right clicking on Start, select Search or Find, put in the filename, and make sure it is searching the entire c drive (it defaults to a subfolder of Windows on most systems).

Sorry I can't give you more specific directions. Alsy, if you would like try sending me the files and I can make sure they are not corrupted. Good luck.

Tom1939,

You definitely don't need that file and if that is the report that lists the strenghts of you units and economy you sure don't want to give that to your opponent. I don't know what that file is though.

This file contains the combat results for the prior turn. If not sent, it prevents the other player from seeing the combat results for that turn, although the review is really difficult to do anyway. Not critical but it can be helpful to have.

Ricky,

In the game I am playing we don't send that file and I use the in game review function for both the Soviet and German side. Is that file used for that purpose or is it used external to the game?

I don't know, I guess. Don and I have always exchanged it and I thought it was what held the combat information, but I guess not. I will look further at it tonight, if I get a chance. It seems like it gets a modified data stamp of when the program is shutdown rather than anything else, and so I thought it showed the combat, including aerial through that point. If it doesn't have the combat data, then I have no clue what it might be for at this point, as it definitely is modified in relation to something in the game. It may also be unnecessary in the Secure PBEM games, rather than games based on sending the files without encryption. Very interesting!

Well, I looked into the two files tonight - savex.cd and report.cbt. The two files are identical, and the game uses them interchangeably for the combat results - if either is missing, the combat results are present. Delete the savex.cd and the game gives an error message but everything works fine. Then rename the report.cbt to savex.cd and no error message and everything works fine. Delete BOTH files, and there is an error message but the game runs. However, then clicking on the hexes of combat show that combat took place and even the result number, but not the results themselves and the map does not show an icon.

Don't know what the point of the report.cbt file is, except that it is automatically created whether the game is saved or not. Don't know if its only point is to store the data until the .cd file is created, or there is more to it than that, but anyway only the 3 files are necessary to get the full combat review.
