May 6th. 42.
I'm going to highlight what I, and many others, believe to be a flawed ASW model as it is now in WITP. While I've altered the ASW devices in our CHS mod and have tested it somewhat, I'm beginning to feel it may not be enough. This PBEM is stock but I believe the improving crew ratings as game progresses to have more effect on accuracy than I initially thought.
Anyway, here is May 6/42.

Hi, You just can't say "Escort was provided" and think groups should fly. Those BB had 64 A6M2 assigned as CAP now not all 64 would be overhead since the range was 4 hexes.
How many fighters did you have? Figure you would need at least 20 per strike. I don't see any escorts at all with several of your strikes.

Hey! I'm picking on the AI...leave me alone!![:D] Seriously, had about 50-60 fighters set to CAP 20% with ample range to reach the target. Anyway, how would the air boss know there were 64 Zeros over the target? This Beta Zoid ability is one of those things, like morale, which should have no bearing on whether strikes fly or not.

RE: May 7th. 42.
Another day and, what's this, another bombardment TF heading my way. Might be ugly!
Todays results were same as most with the exception that a DD escorting his BBs struck a mine, not at a port with hundreds of them, but in an open coastal hex along the route with far fewer. I rarely see bombarding ships hit mines in base hexes...the mines only seem to hit the odd AP during landings from where I sit. Bad luck I guess considering mines and subs are about the only thing short of a SF TF which could contest the surreal conveyor belt like bombardment missions in the game. I'm not about to commit major surface ships in this area considering the massive LBA in the region and KB lurking somewhere...plain suicide.

Hey, ya know. You got me. I stand corrected. Kinda hard for the recon guy to miss the 64 Zeros buzzing his plane![:D] I can be really stunned sometimes.[8D]

RE: May 8th. 42.
Mogami continues his aggressive use of surface combat and bombardment TFs in the area around Java. Allied airpower, lacking any form of AP bomb, land multiple hits on a cruiser force off the Lesser Sunda Islands but the bombs simply bounce of any armor causing a few fires but no real damage due to the limited damage model. Not even an exposed weapons platform hit to show for their efforts. Tommorow is another day! (and tomorrow promises a new world order with Allied AP bombs miraculously making their appearance!)[&o]
Nikademus and I suggested very early on that some additional hit locations be provided, Nik advocating a "NEAR MISS" location which would cause some flooding and I suggested a generic "SUPERSTRUCTURE" location which represents the non vital unarmoured areas of a ship which, if hit, would cause light system and/or fire damage. This would make larger ships more vulnerable to at least some damage from non penetrating hits and smaller ships more resiliant. Crew factors, like LCU squads, were also suggested and could be killed when ship takes damage and have same VP value as LCU squads, making damage to and loss of ships more expensive than they presently are.
For any of you who balk at the thought of expanding Soerabaja into a size 9 port fearing your efforts only provide Japan with one when Java falls, think again. Early on I moved as many engineers to Soerabaja as were available and expanded it by late February/early March. With 5 MLs and 2 mine laying subs at the ABDAs disposal, the DEI has been sown with so many minefields any landing or movement through restricted waters is dangerous to the Japanese naval forces. Yesterday a Japanese destroyer struck a mine outside Balikpapan. Today, the light cruiser Nagara hit another in the Lesser Sunda Strait. Both ships have been reported as heavily damaged. The entire Malay barrier is ideal for sowing minefields

This is what I was talking about in the CV coordination thread. The IJA air missions vs the LCUs at Yenen always suffer as an uncoordinated strike due to the game mechanics spliting the strike at the base of origin in order to determine target selection. Had there been any Allied CAP, both the missions would have had to run the CAP gauntlet. I suggest the target selection happen as it does for ships in a TF, with CAP attacking before the split so the ground attack strikes have a chance at being coordinated.

Aaack...I hate those free trial teases! Phweew...got my fix but I tend to over indulge. Need more turns.
Anyway, another day of moderate action in the Java Sea. The Bombardment TF attacked yesterday by ABDA aircraft retired with the CL Nagara lagging behind due to mine damage suffered the previous day, and as a result was treated to a TVA launched torpedo.
Stupid error on my part resulted in the loss of a GVT section at Pontiak...forgot to transfer the sods out.[:(]

Well, looks like Mogami is making a move on the Malay Barrier. That AP hit during the airstrike south of the Macassar Strait had troops aboard... Bali is the most likely target I would guess. Still no sign of KB but I'm sure they will depart Davao Gulf soon enough.
Kendari and Amboina are a shambles and unable to operate aircraft in support of any move South West. Kuching is operational but damaged. Singapore is undamaged but too far for any move beyonf Palembang. Banderjasman and Macassar most likely will see some aircraft based there soon. Must be alot of CAP over Balikpapan as my 4E heavies refuse to fly when targeted.
Next couple of turns may be desperate ones for the Allies.

The number of Japanese TFs sighted in the Java Sea south of Macassar Strait are increasing as the Japanese operation progresses. Any number of targets are possible objectives for the Japanese. I must hope that my analysis of the situation proves correct.

Of this massive ASW group, of which all ships can get a crack at the sub thanks to the Gang Bang effect (only three actually fired, but as the exp ratings of ships go up, eventually all will be attacking the sub, an operational impossibility)three DDs drop a total of 6 DCs, all of which hit! Yes, I believe that unaimed DCs actually are more accurate that aimed torpedoes in the game.

Hi, I'll give you a hint. Seal was not sunk by ASW TF. Those DD are escorts.
I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Hi, "Operation Exlax" has commenced. I am presently way behind schedule in SRA and the operation is intended to "break things loose" (It's time to S%$# or get off the pot)

Did you choose "Exlax" as a poke at the Allied High Command, having just endured a bout of the splats thanks to the Jerk Chicken served at the O Club the other night?[:D]

RE: May 5/42 Java Sea
[quote]ORIGINAL: Ron Saueracker
Mogami has been running a fair amount of bombardment TFs against Banderjasman lately and it now seems he is becoming more earnest in his prosecution of his plans to capture the base in preparation for a leap across to Java. Managed to hit Nagato with a 500 pounder as he is just outside of my torpedo hefting limit.....boing!
He? [:D]

RE: May 12th, 1942
The Java Sea is filthy with Japs...I'm still bemoaning the inability for players to impart some sort of target priority for the air bases and the aircraft formations stationed there. Being able to stress to the local commander that the enemy troop transports are more of a threat to the security of the Malay Barrier and Java than are secondary targets like airbases and targets twice as far away as the APs would help alot.

Hi, I have a message from your air boss "Hello, silly do you see any escorts with these missions? Hello??? 4E bombers will fly without escort but it would be nice if you provided some anyway"
Well enough from that cry baby I say screw the escorts and charge on in.
(Just so you know, there are currently over 200 A6M2 flying CAP over Exlax forces)

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
