OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: CHS Mod AAR vs Japanese AI

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Why not let you guys see some of the stuff in the CHS Mod at this juncture while it is in development. The PBEM test vs Subchaser is on the backburner until the Aden and Panama additions to the map are ready and Don is plugging away at the air groups.

Enjoy the peak.[;)]

Opening shots in Shanghai. Dec7th, 1941.

The USS Wake is blasted by the IJN Armoured Cruisers stationed in Shanghai Harbour. What was funny is that the combat text began with "Japanese force is surprised!" Yeah, whatever.[:D] Wake goes down...no surrendering like IRL!

The Utah as reported sunk in the sunk ship list

Post by Ron Saueracker »

She has no armament in the Mod despite having been armed as a weapons test ship in addition to her target drone duties. She was in her target ship livery during the attack so all deck and weapon spaces were covered by timbers. I suppose we could have added the few .50 cals reportedly used briefly but hey...what are you guys, geeks?[;)]

Why no allied troop losses when Batan Is is taken? I assume you guys know what is correct. Were there allied troops there on Dec 7th or not?

(ps, thanks for showing us this AAR.)

Hey, this is one of the reasons I'm posting the AAR. After all, the CHS is a group effort.[:)] Post away, opinions and observations welcome.

No, there weren't any troops on Batan. To be honest, Allied command in PI (or elsewhere) was not aware that Japanese landed there for several days.

I'm rather surprised that in such a heavy mod, Japanese continue to land on day one in Vigan, Aparri, Guam and Legaspi, all operations that took place several days after PH in RL. Also I would cancel the daylight raid on Singapore... but send one from Kwajalein to Wake.

The Dutch coastal sub KXII sufferred serious flood damage from a close pattern of Type 95 DCs. The armor value of 2 (like durability, we chose a thickness in mm whick equates approximately to dive depth) did not help much this time but the reduced accuracy and yeild of all ASW weapons may have. Notice we reduced the durability value of subs in conjunction with adding armor and tweaking ASW devices...this was done to make Japanese subs less expensive to construct.

We have done nothing to the AI that I'm aware of as this is primarily a PBEM geared mod. Could adapt Prys scen 16 perhaps.

I guess these various landings and raids are the "historical turn" of the mod. Well, they are unhistorical.

Yes, but the stuff the Admiral refers to is just initial scenario conditions i.e. missions for air groups, TF loading/destinations etc.

Perhaps the opening moves will get a tweak after the OOB and other "meaty" elements are squared away.

Well...there was a reason why the devs had the Enterprise TF farther west than historically was the case. To accomodate the AI and kepp Halsey from constantly reacting to his doom and impaling the TF on KB. Going to have to move it back so the AI does not freak every turn. I don't play vs the AI anymore but many do, including Don Bowen, so I guess this will have to be done. Personally, I'd have the TF arrive at PH on the 8th to alleviate this.

The civilian shipyard in San Francisco, "Addwater and Stir Shipbuilding", instantaneously received contracts for one Essex class and one Cleveland class at the end of the day, and if memory serves, will be commissioned before any of the already building members of their respective classes are scheduled for completion. These guys could teach Henry Kaiser a thing or two, eh?[:D]

RE: Dec 7th Combat Report

Post by Andrew Brown »

Yes, but the stuff the Admiral refers to is just initial scenario conditions i.e. missions for air groups, TF loading/destinations etc.

I do not know what, if anything, has been done to the Japanese starting forces. As far as I know, most of the attention has been placed on the Allied forces.

We are more than happy to receive help from anyone who wants to suggest modifications to the Japanese forces/missions etc.

Suggestions for Initial Dispositions

1) Enterprise TF - You can set the react range to 0 for this TF in the editor. Also, for the Lex TF and even the KB. That might possibly prevent any unintended CV battles.

2) Initial Japanese dispositions - I have no idea about what would be historically accurate. The thing that annoys me though is the fragments of the 65th Brigade and 48th, 5th & 18th Divisions that get left at Taan, Pescadores and Formosa on turn one. The TFs for those LCUs just need a few transports adding to them ...

3) CAP at Pearl - I would propose reducing the initial CAP levels for fighters at PH to something like 10/20%. Even with the "Dec 7th surprise" it seems like too many fighters get in the air.

4) Wake Island air attack - As another poster suggested, did not bombers from Kwajalein attack Wake prior to the landings? I don't suppose the effect would be very great though (only 36 Nells at Kwaj). If this was done I would suggest reducing the CAP level of VMF-211/1 in a similar way to the fighters at Pearl.

5) Brit/Aussie bombers in Malaya - I would almost prefer that these be stood down until Dec 8th. However, as an alternative I would suggest that if the planes are going to be left on Naval Attack then the default altitude be reduced from 15,000 feet. British anti-shipping missions were generally performed at wave-top height AFAIK. That would be silly though since, because of the low exp of the pilots, the result would be lots of planes shot down for no hits. How about a compromise of 2,000 feet?

6) As a corollary to 5, how about setting the Oscar Sentai in Kompong Trach to LRCAP the Khota Baru landing force? This is what most players will do on turn 2 anyway.

"Historical missions"

1) Malaya
Singapore was bombed at night by Saigon Nells. No air battle here on first day.
Allied bombers attacked Japanese ships off Khota Bharu at low alt and sank one, damaged two other APs. They met Japanese fighters over the fleet.
Japanese troops landed in several points in Thailand. And met resistance by Thai Army and AF for some hours, because of the secret nature of the treaty between Thai and Japanese governments.
Japanese submarines lay minefields NW of Singapore

How to simulate this :
1 Nell unit being ordered to bomb Singapore airfield, other set on naval attack.
All North Malaya airfield targeted by IJAAF bombers.
Part of Zero and Oscars LRCAPING Khota Bharu and Songkhia. Or escorting IJAAF bombers to attack Malaya airfield.
Several Japanese TF landing in KB, Songkhia (with part of a Tk Rgt), Bandou, Bangkok.
Give minelaying missions to SS I-121 o I-124 (also in PI).
Allied fighters in Singapore fly no CAP, so simulating a "night bombing" with all light on in the city.
Allied fighters elsewhere fly CAP. Allied bombers set on naval attack with alt 5000 feet.

2) Hong Kong
Airfield was bombed and most planes here destroyed/damaged beyond repair.
Allied troops had to be chased from the inland part before the invasion of the island.

How to simulate this:
put part of the garnison in Canton hex, with forts able to resist some days. Add a river between HK and Canton.

3) PI
Heavy raid on Clark Field
Only landing was done in Batan island, that was undefended.

How to simulate this:
Remove the BF in Batan Island (allready done)
Cancel the landings in Aparri, Vigan and Legaspi. Convoys should be placed at two sailing days of their targets. Bigger part of 48th Div is in Pescadores and landed latter in Lingayen.

4) Wake
Was bombed by Nells from Kwajalein that destroy on the ground most of the F4F-3 of the island.

How to simulate this:
low alt bombing raid (should work with surprise rule) and low CAP setting for the Wildcats.

If you do this, the Japanese invasion will succeed 100% of the time. Wake wasn't invaded until the 12th or so, historically. If you add more to the fray, the Wake defenders will never have the chance to repulse the initial invasion.
The older I get, the better I was.
