PzB vs Wobbly - Clash of Steel
Moderators: wdolson, Don Bowen, mogami
RE: The struggle continues!
You are getting a daily confidence boost, but if you can't get auto-victory and Wobbly will come back and have 2+ years of confidence boosting for himself. Yamato with 47 SYS damage and in Singapore for repairs? I'm sure Wobbly would have preferred to sink her, but that can't be too bad -- Yamato is out of action for months now and by the time she's back Corsairs will be in the air.
Your airforce is shot to hell and the allies get starting pilots better than you can train. And in large numbers. If your vicotry in India doesn't make auto-victory that is a major problem because the allies will be back.
What is the current VP line-up? You've had a lot of kills in the Java Sea (very good!), but lost a lot of aircraft, too. Is it at 4-1 or 3-1 in VPs? Even 2-1 doesn't help you these days. Still, you are commended to still be on the offensive in July 1942 - I'd say you owe it all to an extremely ambitious, and well rewarded, amphibious invasion of India. Future Allied players will have a lot to learn from that manuever!

The struggle continues?
Imperial Headquarters in Tokyo has received a message from Allied Supreme Command and invited us to discuss terms.
Our claims are: To keep all of our current posessions and take over control of India.
The Allied expeditionary force will have to leave Java within 3 weeks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was very sorry to hear that Al wanted to call it quits today, but I understand him and has told him that he can do so whenever he wants to.
Many mean blows have been delivered, and India has all but fallen. The Allied hold on Java will then become teneous at best. The losses I've suffered
lately will still make it very difficult to achieve an autovictory. If the Allies can score only 2-3 or 4000 more points over the next 5 months, it will become alll but impossible.
I've asked Al to think about it for another day. Perhaps our peace terms aren't acceptable after all!?
Anyway: I'd hate to quit this game just a few months before the possible culmination of my long coveted goal - the conquest of India.
I might be interested in taking on a replacement player. Either to play until a decision has been reached in India (1/1-43 at the latest) - or to take this great
conflict to its final conclusion.
I've also offered Al another game, but I do feel that he needs a break just now.
I must say that I've never enjoyed any game more than this one, and I'd like to thank Al for making this into a very enjoyable journey. (For me at least [:'(])
He has played a great game, and I've enjoyed both his honesty and great sense of humor!

I'd be interested in trying it as it stands. (One of my favorite all time war games was the old Strategy and Tactics Vietnam War game, with me being the Viet Kong - I always loved guerilla war. [;)])
My only question is what version are you running at? I've got 1.40 running and I want to go to 1.50 once it eventually comes out. Are you at 1.40?

Thx for the offer David! We're playing with V1.4 now, upgraded from V1.2?

Please do. I'd love to see this continued. The next six months will not be fun, but you can prevail. PzB, you wouldn't stand a chance against the green Soviet toad cosmonaut thing - whatever Dave's picture is.

Nan ja kore wa?! Keroro Gunsou (Sergent Frog) is a bonafide alien invader who is actively involved with conquering Japan on a weekly basis. [;)]

OK Dave, I went to that website and actually watched the 30-second video, in Japanese, of Sargeant Frog. I'm not gettin' that 30 seconds back, dude.
Seriously, it was kinda fun, given that it was completely unintelligible to me.
Anyway, I'd also love to see a continuation of this game.

That's actually the preview for this coming Satuday's episode. (I think that it will be episode 48.) I watch digital downloads of the weekly broadcasts, then order the region 2 DVDs when they come out. (I've been studying Japanese for around 7 years and I find watching Japanese TV and movies a fun way to give myself listening comprehension practice.)
PzB and I are discussing a resumption of hostilities. I've got permission from William Lyon Mackenzie King (and his dead mother) to take over all Pacific commands. (King has made a deal to let FDR have exclusive use of a northern Ontario fishing lodge where Elenor won't find him and his "aide" in exchange for letting "Johnny Canuck" take over command.)
We'll keep you posted.

RE: The struggle continues?
Apologies for a somewhat off-topic question for Dave: is Japanese a difficult language to learn? I spent a week or so there a few years ago and was surprised at how heavily I had to lean on my "restaurant Japanese" to get around. Is it possible to teach oneself to read or understand? I'm pretty good with languages -- French and Russian anyway -- so I'm curious.

If you've been able to learn Russian as a second language, then you will find Japanese a challenge but not a shock. I studied a handful of other languages before taking on Japanese and it was still quite a steep learning curve. What made it possible at all was that I spent several years taking all of the Continuing Education classes in Japanese that my local colleges and universities offered. Those courses gave me the fundamentals to allow me to set myself a good self-study program. But the real key to success for me has been the fact that I usually watch anywhere from a half hour to several hours of Japanese TV programming, either via digital downloads or via recorded media, every day. My big challenge nowadays is to build my skill at reading and remembering kanji - the Chinese writing charaters that the Japanese use for nouns and verb beginnings. I already know the other two Japanese writing systems, hiragana and katakana well. I see this as a lifetime learning experience and find it to be an enjoyable intellectual exercise.
Playing wargames, on the other hand, is just plain gut-level fun. [:D]

Yes, PzB did kindly send a turn to me, and after many hours of pondering and thinking, I've sent it back. So now I'll stop perusing this report and start my own.
I doubt that I'll be able to entertain everyone as well as PzB does, or Wobbly did, but as ZonkerH and Tophat know, I do have my own ways of "making war interesting". [;)]

I'll trust that you didn't just call my mother a toad, too.
Are you starting a new thread or continuing the Sand in the Vaseline thread? Personally, I think the thread title sent Wobs some subliminal messages that doomed him to failure.
Good luck and fare well, my green frog cosmonaut!

The struggle continues!
NEWSFLASH![/b] Negotiations with the enemy have broken down. A new CinC has taken over command of the Allied land, sea and air forces in the entire Pacific.

Situation Report
Tony and Tojo fighter production has been stepped up considerably. Next month both models become available, and I'm looking forward to converting some Nates. Ahh yes! [;)]
India
At first I didn't dare to move my Army bombers into Bombay - but Wobbly only wanted to bomb my ground forces. I didn't get a chance to reconsider, cause
David immediately ordered massive strikes. My fighters will be put on 90% CAP for tomorrow. I'm mostly interested in reducing their striking capabilities, so if the bombers continue to
come in unescorted....
The loss of the surface group was unfortunate. I didn't expect to find that many Allied ships there! The battle fleet has reformed in Bombay and refueled. The Kongo has been dispatched together
with a ca and dd. The other 4 battleships will attempt to finish the Allied fleet once and for all. I'm pretty sure David will confront them.
A regiment has been ordered into Dehli - my army has now moved out of Lucknow and will reach the place in 10 days or so. The ferocious struggle in Ahmadabad continues, and it's possible
that I have to wait for reinforcements before it falls. Enemy losses are much higher than mine, so I don't see any reason to stop attacking.
Java
All the enemy ships have left Java! I'm now going to rest my AF in Sumatra and Borneo. In a week or so we will continue to hit the enemy fields.
We got sizeable ground units in both Sumatra (Palembang) and Borneo now. I wish to consolidate my position and try to isolate Java. I need another 2 months to defeat India, in October we're going
to move forces down to Java and recapture the island. Then we will go onto the defensive and await the next enemy onslaught.
Lots and lots of enemy ships have been spotted west in the Indian Ocean. No sight of enemy battleships, I believe they've all gone to Perth. So I'm going to try to intercept the fleeing ships.
China
Many Nate Daitas have been moved to China, they will start advanced training ASAP! The Zero pilots that have been strafing the Chinese have gained extremely many exp points.
I'm now confident that it's going to be possible to train a new cadre of fighter pilots.
Situation Map: The situation in Java

David is going to take over for Wobbly and the first turn has already been played. I will continue this AAR as before, I assume that David will start a new thread for his.
The turn I originally sent to Wobbly therefore landed in Canada instead of Kiwi land! Murphy got confused and I suffered no less than 3 magazine explosions in one batlle [;)]
David has immediately implemented a new strategy, and I got a few costly surprises. It will be necessary to develop new tactics in order to counter this new threat. Confidence in ultimate victory is

RE: The struggle continues!
It's alive!!!!!!!!
October 42 sounds awfully late for a major Japanese offensive.
How soon do you think the Allies will be able to launch a minor invasion elsewhere?

Hurrah - I can read this one now.
he managed to get the bombers to hit Bombay - what did he give them suddenly - extra rum? They refused to contemplate it under my control. I tried adding Warhawks to the mix. Thought you just had major fighter numbers above the base - turns out you did have plenty - but they still flew.
3 magazine explosions - the rapture - the joy. The confusion?? What did he do differently?
The surface fleet that attacked you in Karachi was actually aiming to Bombard Bombay!
He's taken the surface fleet out of Tjilitap!! I think maybe he knows something I didn't!
3 magazine explosions and a swag of lost aircraft - wow - what a change a new captain can make!

. . . Yes, and give PzB advice based on experience. Knowing the Allied position as well as you do, wouldn't you recomment that the Japanese withdraw to an inner defense ring as soon as possible? And the northern route to Tokyo is left wide open, don't you think? If PzB only knew the hammer that is about to fall upon him . . .

Doesn't seem fair does it? Take solace in the fact that it really is a roll of the die, and it just didn't roll right for you. Too bad these magazine explosions didn't happen for you on the last turn so you could sleep with a smile. I am looking forward to reading your comments on both threads, Wobbly.

RE: The struggle continues!
Yep, it's very much alive Fornadan [8D]
It's perfectly ok to invade, even in 1943 if the odds are favorable. The important thing is to bring superior force. As long as I got the KB and a sizeable airforce, I can
land all the divisions I want on Java. The Allied carriers fled head over heels, so I assume that they're not strong enough to confront me!
Minor invasion...well, it can't be in the Marshall or Solomons. I've fortified those areas heavily. It would take a major effort to invade there. Perhaps Wake, Shortland
or Gili Gili can be captured, but I don't expect more than this before 1943. David said he first would need 3 months, and then 6 to prepare. Hope he's right.
Al, I think it's really about hammer size. The side with the biggest hammer usually pulls the longest straw. Bring more and better ships, land more hits and win.
In yesterdays battle I brought a small tf, had hoped to pick of a few stray vessels. The loss of the flagship early in the battle settled it.
Thought you would go and bombard Bombay, evacuated all the transports and brought the battleships back home. The cat would have been home in other words.
The Allied ships do pose a threat against my slow battlewagons now - their torpedoes are highly functional. So I'm going to send in the whole sink in and try to overpower them.
I'm a little worried about Java, but I feel confident in India - as long as I can pull it of there I should be able to strike back. One last effort, and then a few months for R&R [&o]
