The best was to destroy a station?

Post by Count Sessine »

My fleet was ripped to pieces yesterday facing the Ramake station (operation Nightfall). First problem was that I could only control part of the fleet due to my rank. Which meant I had to give them Nav points before the battle commenced. It turned out the nav points I gave them made two of the cruisers ram the station and selfdestruct, despite the nav points being well off of the station. Very unfortunate.

And then the station turned out to be really tough [:)] We succeeded in the end, but it was quite a battle. As I see the station its equally well guarded on all sides... My bomber torpedoes seemed useless against it.

(PS. This is really annoying: In a given battle I can only control 1 squadron. The two other squadrons are essentially useless because they don't respond to my 'attack target' commands (command is greyed out). I only hold the rank of Vice-Admiral, I guess that may be the problem...)

It's not your rank, it's your assignment that is the problem. As a Vice Admiral, you can command any ship in the fleet, including the carrier. But when you are in the field, everyone needs to obey the chain of command. If you are flying a single fighter, you are dangling on the end of that chain. If you want to boss everyone around, you need to do it from the big chair in the CVBG command center. And that chair is in the carrier.

Once you advance to Fleet Admiral, you get the extra perk of everyone reporting to you all the time, no matter which ship you are personally commanding. Until that time, you need to decide how you can serve the fleet best.

Heavy cruisers like the Devastator class are the best available weapon for assaulting military stations. As you have now discovered, they are not as agile as fighters. You need to create attack routes that will leave them free and clear to navigate around obstacles.

True, very true. Learning the hard way.. AND without reloading previous saves when things go wrong [8D]

But, I was actually in command of the carrier at the time, still I couldn't modify nav points during the battle.
