RE: May 23rd, 1942: Malang...mopping up operations

Post by Ron Saueracker »

I am not expecting to be able to keep Java by any means as vs a PBEM opponent this would be next to impossible, but the more bloody and costly for Mogami I can make it, the better it is for me overall. The loss of many APs at Malang should cause him some serious headaches in the near future, and Batavia looks to be hard on APs as well.

The raging inferno which is the Java Sea erupts with further action at Batavia, Soerabaja, Malang and off shore.

Another one of those totally whacked combat replays (they are so wrong that FOW must be ruled out and replay bug in). It would be nice if Mogami could post the Japanese version of this report as it is the master from which the following turn is based. When this happens I am left in the dark and don't feel like frigging around looking at each unit trying to figure out if it was part of the actual turn of some buggy report. I'm posting an untouched report for comparison to Mogamis Japanese version.

Top illustrate what I mean, the Perch is still unharmed and no torps expended and the RAF/USAAF mission over Bangkok is a mess as Blenheims get butchered, yet in the following replay the Blenheims seem to come through the combat with fewer losses and the Perch was lost by 3 DC hits after fire a spread of 4 Mk14s..oh yeah...all torps miss, all DC hit!!![8|] I'll get them to admit the ASW is knackered if it's the last thing I do...if they care about their product they will fix it in the end.

The minefields laid since Soerabaja became a size 9 port continue to take their toll on the aggressive Mogami's shipping.

The AVD Preston's luck runs out off Bali.

Air battles rage over Java with KBs bombers getting bloodied attacking Madioen. Kendari, Macassar and Amboina remain unservicable to the Japanese as they continuously get pounded by the Army Air Corps.

Another Japanese landing on Java, this time at Kragen, meets heavy resistance.

Yenen finally falls to the Japanese juggernaut of half a million men after holding out for 6 months. Defenders fall back to prepared positions.

And the minefields continue to exact a toll...

More of KBs trained pilots are lost over Madioen.

Port Moresby's defenders continue to suffer in the air. This will be a battle of attrition until more air power can be massed in the area as the DEI has drained the region of effective fighter units.

Kragen falls under a single shock attack while the Japanese hanging on at Batavia and Malang withstand the same treatment...if white skins were not such wimps lacking moral fibre![;)]

Burma continues to be a sausage factory for the Japanese.

Mogami has referred to the landings in Java as mere recons! That's either really funny or really bloody scary![:D][X(]

Yes, it has indeed been rather brutal. [X(] I wonder how many Japanese APs have been wrecked off Java during Exlax? Wait one...we are looking at 41 Japanese APs (no AKs have been hit so far during Exlax) already accounted for on the sunk ship list, plus an equal number damaged and many IJN warships sunk or damaged). Java has been so far and will continue to be a quagmire for Japan.

Hi, Yes I've lost between 200 and 300 VP worth of AP so far. But I see a few Allied units that have traveled into SRA to bolster defense of Java that will make up for it. (I will not have to kill them later in a battle outside SRA where more Japanese AP would be lost)
Also I understand why Singapore went so fast once I attacked it. All the defending units are in Sumatra or Java.

Yes but how many ac do you ( MOG ) have left ... and how many ac does he ( RON ) have left ?

If you run out and he doesn't then the exchange ratio is meaningless ( kinda like the tank warfare on the Eastern front ! )

Hi, I have plenty of AC left.

Oh, believe me, Mog has tons! Unfortunately for him, I have more than 50% of the "divide unit" slots at the moment as the splits are on AKs somewhere at sea. We are going to reserve 9 each once they become available. It is restricting his ability to "on map" train pilots. Sorry, Russ, had no idea that I had more than my share...guess it's expected considering I have SOooooooooo many more groups, eh?[;)] (Unfortunately P-39s and Mohawks).

Don Bowen has changed all the Groups into their historical squadrons in the CHS so the lack of slots will become a moot point.

More of the same bloodletting...

I really could use a Japanese capitulation/banzai attack or something at Malang as the defeat at Kragen is a major cause for alarm. I'd like to kill off these Japanese remnants and turn my attention to the coming hordes sure to land at Kragen in the next few days. This Japanese ability to withstand these attacks is bizarre as this is not a prepared position nor an atoll, simply some shell scrapes which the poor bastards had to hide in when they were met on the beaches by prepared defenders. IRL I think the Dutch and Kiwis would be wiping the blood of the last dead Japs off their bayonets. 8:1 odds should have been more than sufficient but alas, I've seen the game permit Japanese survival at more than 10,000:1 odds!

I wonder where the Allied CVs are?[:'(]

The Two TFs spotted NE of Batavia earlier did indeed include one heading for Batavia loaded with more troops. Fully suspecting this to be the case, I switched the Martins from ground to naval attack and got in some serious blows. Java will not be cheap for Japan.

It is starting to cost the Allies some ships as well. The supply TF I split up at Tjilitjap to make it less vulnerable to a coordinated strike was crushed under an air attack equaling that which hit the USN at Pearl Harbor. Complete devastation for the brave men of the Red Duster.

I split the TF up in order to highlight the flaw in CAP/strike routines which Frag insists does not exist. I could not get the AI to cooperate this time but the structure is there in any case. Notice how each TF draws a separate strike package BEFORE the CAP resolution? My point is that (despite the fact that the AI escorted the first of these strikes with ALL the Zeros sweeping the CAP from the skies) the strike split due to TF selection should come AFTER the CAP vs Strike phase because the present mechanics deny the strike ANY chance at coordination. Had there been CAP survivors, or the Zeros escorted a later/different strike, the CAP would have had a go at multiple strikes when really it should only get one before the strike splits vs the multiple TFs. The same problem exists vs multiple LCUs.

B-17s hit Saigon and smack a sub. If they don't wanna come out and play because of the uber ASW I'll get 'em where they live![:D]

Another shock attack vs the poor sods at Malang results in 33:1 odds and still the Japs hold on. Either the Japs are given too much credit in this game or the whities are being cast as fancy boys.

Man, what a day. I sent a small Dutch destroyer TF against the oncoming Japanese Amphib group and once again, although the recon boys found the TF initially, they failed to accurately report it's size and composition. Instead of a TF with maybe a dozen APs and a few damaged MLs as escort, a TF three times the size with a strong escort led by cruiser Kashima were off Batavia. The three Dutch destroyers fought bravely, sinking a Japanese DD (magazine detonation) but all succumbed as well to overwhelming fire, two of their number being lost to magazine explosions. The Amphib TF moved off for a day.

Hi, It just goes to show that even when the game provides perfect recon the player can mis-interpet it.
Knock Knock (Ron:"Who's there?"
Task Force (Ron: "Task force who"?
Task Force more then one thats who

(There were 3 TF moving together towards Batavia. There were 2 TF leaving Batavia there are 2 more TF in area)
