spy bot
Guys need little help here. I have spy bot and adaware installed on my machine. For quite awhile had no problem with pop ups. The last two weeks I have started getting pop ups again. I have the spy bot set with immuninize and blocker ennabled. Am still getting ceres pop ups mostly when i go on internet. How come all of a sudden im getting this junk again.
Can any one help me. I have to run both programs every time I come here to check for new posts. That is why I have cut my visits to the forum way down. I used to come here every day but the pop ups got too bad.

Either Spybot or Ad-Aware are fine working alone, I have never found a reason to use both. That said, spyware is not your problem, it is you browser. Switch your browser to either Firefox or the Mozilla Suite. After a couple hours you will also see how backward IE really is. The Mozilla Suite also has an email client, it and Thunderbird, have an adaptive SPAM filter. You may want to check that out. Also be aware you can enable pop-ups from selected sites if you need to.

RE: spy bot
Get the Google Toolbar. Has an excellent pop-up blocker. Free download.

Trade a browser that blocks pop-up naturaly for a an addon that contains it's own spyware?[:-]
Just do it right to begin with.

I tried Mozilla, and am not a fan. Thought it sucked. Like Google toolbar. I thought we were offering suggestions, not knocking opinions...
RE: spy bot
Yes, we are offering suggestions, and reasons, to dealing with the problem of pop-ups, and addressing Robot's concern over spyware. (Robot, correct us if we are wrong.) I have tried both the Yahoo and Google toolbars, both set Ad-Aware. That means Ad-Aware says they are reporting back to somewhere. Both companies say the information collected is strictly for diagnostic and product support purposes (presumably this means version and definition updates). I've heard before and found it to be untrue. In fairness, I will say Yahoo has gotten better about that.
Anyway... Spyware will not change whether or not a pop-up is triggered. Pop-up are scripted at the website. What spyware may do, is determine which pop-up you may get. The spyware reports to the site where you have been, or what you may have already seen, the site script then selects the appropriate pop-up. To block the pop-up you need to either, block the command (like the IE addons), or restrict new windows to direct commands (like Firefox/Mozilla). I have found the latter to be much more effective.
I have only had 3 sites in the past 5 years able to bring up pop-ups on my home and office systems. I have used Mozilla since version 1.2 and Firefox (it was Firebird at the time) since version 0.7. I also use Thunderbird and Outlook. I do not like pop-ups, email bugs, spyware, or hijacked browsers. I do like tabbed browsing, cookie control, easy RSS feeds and the customization that comes with the Mozilla/Firefox extensions.
That's my story and I'm stick'n to it. Robot, it's your problem, now it's your call.

There is a knock at the door of the robot household. For some reason, the knock sounds ominous. Tentatively, robot answers the door. Two men in dark suits and sunglasses (mirrored, of course) stand there. Both have a small letter 'G' on their suit breast.
robot : "Yes, may I help yo-"
G man one : "Sir, we understand that you have visited the Campbell's soup site recently."
robot : "Well, yes, I suppose I hav-"
G man two : "It has also come to our attention that you have searched the internet for Nick Jr."
robot : "Oh, that would be for the grandki-"
G man one: "We just bet it was kid related."
robot : "Huh?"
G man two : "Is it not true that you are training militarily to overthrow the US government through a site about tanks?"
robot : "Huh?"
G man one : "Sir, have you, in fact, visited the Sears website, and browsed through the womens undergarment section?"
robot : "The wife may hav-"
G man two : "You'll have to come with us, your days of sick internet surfing are overwith. Google does not play with people like you."
robot : "Huh?"
G man one : "We got you thru the toolbar, you sick SOB. Please do me a favor and refuse to get in the sedan."
robot : "Huh?"
G man two : "Thanks, pops. You just made our day." both G men reach for their stun guns...

RE: spy bot
Other than try what some of the others have mentioned, you might want to 'invest' in a seperate popup blocker as I do. This seems to be the best one I have found, and it does have quite a few other neat options such as blocking banners (it's free btw and it gets updates A LOT): http://www.secretmaker.com/
I do have the Firefox browser and while on this cable modem it does seem faster, I'm not entirely sure I like it beyond the slight benefit of some speed. Though I haven't poked it around too much, it does have a neat option of trying to access a very large amount of websotes at one time and you access them through some tabs, such that if you have a wargaming link directory you can have it access all of the sites and as soon as you seen the little clocking stop for any of them you can look that one over as some of the other ones are clocking. It looks like a fairly major advantage for someone who is big on accessing a ton of websites and likes to flip between them with ease and probably is real good for those on 56K modems. It also has a popup blocker which I have no idea how well it works.
Guys, he may need to get Stinger.exe or something else similar to deal with his current what I take to be the popups that appear even when you're not on the internet. I just got Stinger recently but it seems it was a somewhat difficult process finding it and you guys might have a link.

RE: spy bot
I have had a lot of success with an edited HOST file. You may want to look into this. I NEVER get any popups.
(BTW, using Mozilla also. Just can't get enough of that tabbed browsing! [:D])

Good one, Goblin. Sounds like a job for the KG "Anti-Establishment" Security Service. These guys also wear black, but with a certain green leaf on their collartabs and they drive a specially-equipped Hummer with a walk-in cooler in the back. They've been known to povide backstage security for certain rock bands. They also "screen" potential after-gig companionship. The Hummer's PC comes with the "C(rap)-Cleaner Program" installed.
Seriously, though, "C-Cleaner" is much superior to Adaware. Also, I don't understand the problem with using the latest version of IE. It comes with a pretty good popup blocker.
