Bridge bombing

Post by Mist »

Does anyone remember how it was intended to work? Why is it disabled?
Thanx!

Hey Mist,
It never worked. The manual was written a while before the game was finished. I would bet they planned on getting bridge bombing to work and couldn't so it was dropped, and the manual, which is wrong about so many things, was not updated. Just my guess though. We had a discussion of it in the group early on, and Arnaud said it would be very difficult to get it to work, so it was left out. I would guess the major difficulty is that bridges are hexside features and all other bombing is in the hex itself, so it would take a fair amount of work to allow choices of which hexside to hit, and to determine which hexsides have bridges, the repair of the hexside bridge, etc. It could be that the code required took too much memory and was dropped originally for that reason. I don't know one way or the other, though.

Thanx, Ricky! I am just wondering about the idea itself. What are benefits of having a operating bridge in WiR except of rail crossing with river? Manual says that there is an additional readiness loss(10%?) for passing through river hex, but it is so small, that bridges do not make any big difference.

I am not sure, but I think the idea is that if the bridge is bombed, the rail line does not operate, similarly to partisans hitting the rail hex. Also, it would make the supply line cross the river and presumably make it cost one extra, reducing the supply level by 2 on the other side. Those are the two things I would expect from a bombed bridge, anyway.
