WW2 Online has gone gold!
Sorry all for going off topic about WIR. Really looking forward to seeing how this game turns out. Never know. It might be the war game of our dreams?
Hope I can find a good crew for a Pz-38(t)!

yeah, but one good shooter does fit in my pc, as 'copter-,WW2-fighter-,racing and F1 sims... If enough people gets and plays this WW2 online stuff, then maybe there is something to play after few years when all the childs have gone to other *new* cool game...just a thought...I eat, think, play and even do hard dirty work, - so why there should be just one game-style that I like ? Halflife had its points as does AvP that is still in my HD to feed my hunger for action..and no, -I haven't played Alien vs Predator to its end yet....

This isn't about 3D shooters, this is about posting off-topic in the worst place to do so on Matrix's forums. The WiR forum is all about a strategic level wargame, "WWII Online" is a massively multiplayer tactical wargame, and frankly I don't see it working out so well anyway. Giving "WWII Online" a freebie plug here makes absolutely no sense. A suggestion to the original poster: SPWaW, or Combat Leader, or one of the generic forums here would be a better place for this.

Tell the tactical ratbags where to go. They think that if 'I kill 10 Shermans with my Tiger' i've won the war.
Now if they kill 1000 Shermans i might be impressed, and you can do this in 1st person games cause the enemy are silicon impaired and cant really see you or know you are the enemy anyway. Hey, to you detractors, iv'e played Duke 3D, Quake 2 and Shadow Warrior to the end without cheats and they are good stress relievers but you dont really need to 'think' too hard.
And by thinking i mean 'ahead' you know, real thinking.
Nick, aka Loki
PS. Am i visualy impaired or does Skukko have over 1000 posts?? I hope your 'hunger for action' never leads you to aquisition of a Semi-auto weapon.

Yikes. Sorry guys. I wasn't trying to be rude by posting that. Just got kinda excited and I'm not a Quake type game fan. There seems to be some serious people going to play this game.
I try not to generalise things and keep an open mind. I wasn't trying to givd a freebe plug but remember a topic about it here before and thought some of you would be intrested. I'm pretty new to posting on these boards and I'm sorry. Will stay on topic when I have something to post again.

>>Wargame we been waiting for? Maybe for all quake-wannbies but not for the serious strategy-player.
- Granted, there will be quake'ers that
will play WWIIonline, but they will die
over and over and over again. They think
they will win the war all by themselves.
WW2OL is not just about grabbing a gun
and going and killing people...There
are the other aspects to it. Its a
WW2 Flight sim, tank sim, navy sim and of
course your first person perspective
"shooter" all combined into one game. For
those that don't know, the higher ranking
people in the game choose what missions to
give out to other players, what to spend your resources on (ie/ infrastructure, development etc..). Players must take over
and control cities and other locations
which are considered (choke points)
>>This isn't about 3D shooters
-WW2OL is not a 3d shooter. Some may
take it as that, but it is not. It is
a war game that reconstructs nearly
every aspect of WW2. It is a game that will
take strategy and leadership to win. Counter Strike, Quake and all the like are 3d shooters and should be treated as such.
There is so much to WW2OL, its not a grab
a gun and start shooting game like some
may think. Oh, and when have you ever
seen a quake-type game that was as huge
as WW2OL...One theatre can be 722,500 square
kilometers in size....and there will be
ten theatres.
>> and you can do this in 1st person games cause the enemy are silicon impaired and cant really see you or know you are the enemy anyway. Hey, to you detractors, iv'e played Duke 3D, Quake 2 and Shadow Warrior to the end without cheats and they are good stress relievers
- Loki, do you have any clue whatsoever
of the game mechanics of WW2OL? I mean
you sure are describing Duke 3d, Quake 2 and
Shadow Warrior in that statement, but
it doesn't fall anywhere close to WW2OL.
Hey, just asking because I thought this was
a WW2OL post.
You know, all this guy was trying to
do was let those who are interested in the
game know that it has gone gold and
some of you hammered him for it. Obviously
he is a War in Russia fan, he has made
several intellegent on-topic posts before
this one. Why some of you felt you had
to jump on him is beyond me. This game
which isn't even out yet, is ebworld's
best seller and has been in the top
five for the past month.I am going
to throw a few links in here for some folks
education, so they actually know what
WW2OL and its mechanics are about so they
can adequatly describe it as opposed to
posting ignorantly (dictionary meaning).
Call it a free-be ad if you want, I call
it education. After reading these links
and feel that it is still 'just a shooter'
feel free to post for debate. I will not
respond to ignorant posts.

Well. I think that noone was going to insult guy. Here were no posts for couple of days, so I think people just grabbed opportunity to begin little flame war
Don't take it seriously. Thanx for links, may be someone will read'em all. But again, as Ed reasonably said before, post them on the other Matrix-forum.
Hoth, didnt mean to insult you so I hope you accept my apology. But from my point of view WW2OL got very little if nothing to with real strategy war-gaming. Frankly I dont like this horrible war beeing seen as a quake(rainbow 6 if you prefer) type of game. But hey thats my opinion.
By the way I dont mind people posting diffrent kind of topics on this forum. You gotta have a free mind and my world wont crash if Hoth or someone tells me about WW2OL here.

I have no knowledge at all of the WW2online rules. This 'is' a case of speaking through my backside and yes i grabbed at the chance to flame a non purist. Did not know that advanced players get to shell out missions.
I will however not go to the links you posted as you have admitted that it is tactical at the core and good generals pick the best men for the job because they look after the big picture. The sub-commanders win the battles but the guys at the top win or lose wars. I think after 20 years of gaming i have the option to progress to the stratified realms of Panzer Leader and leave the job (that i have done well in the past) of commanding regiments to those who want the job.
If you want the job i'll give you $3.25 an hour.

WW2ol is basically a tactical game is it not?
(You dont command batalions, regiments, brigades, divisions or corps) As a new player if you start the game looking though the sights of a PaK 43 or a Tiger then it is a 1st person shooter is it not? Thus the refference to Quake exct. Those games are fine but you imply that only after proving yourself do you get to to allocate 'assets'.
I get to allocate assets of about 15 million men,30,000 tanks and 20,000 planes per night.
(pbem games)
Responsibility.

Yes, it is. The infantry is definitely a 3D shooter, the tank sim is a 3D shooter with big guns, the Navy sim has the biggest guns of all, and the plane sim is a shooter in 3 dimensions of 360 degrees of freedom. There's an article at GameSpy that calls this game a "Massively Multiplayer First Person Shooter" or something close to that.
I've seen WW2Online mentioned 3 times, and in every mention, it was referred to as a shooter. One of the guys who runs Slashdot pretty much panned it, referring to several possible problems with the performance and graphics.
I read a story recently on Ultima Online, also massively multiplayer. They had so many weird problems due to the behavior of the players, I'll be astonished if this thing really works. How do you keep enough people on both sides to represent historical numerical odds when the players are allowed to play either side? How do you handle peak time participation in the thousands, and the early AM, when much fewer players are online? How do you keep enough infantry if everyone wants to play with a tank? How does a tank work when you can't keep enough people online to represent the crew? Throw in an AI when a human player goes offline? When was the last time any of us saw a competent AI?
You know, all this guy was trying to
do was let those who are interested in the

I didn't see him hammered. The worst thing I saw was someone telling him that we all do not share a common vision of a "wargame of our dreams".

According to what I read, missions are essentially someone saying "Hey guys, lets go occupy that village, Who's with me!". You have absolutely no idea who or what will show up! And I love how you start the game. The game just drops you near some action, so you don't have to search for a fight! Do you honestly think a lot of SPWaW guys will be impressed with that level of leadership, mission planning, and command/control? There is no education here, there is no history here, this is not a military simulation. If this is a wargame, so is Risk.
Feel free to respond to this ignorant post, or not, as you please.

Ignorant one here.
The University of Tennessee is the state college located in the eastern part of the state, in the city of Knoxville. It's sports teams are all called "Volunteers". I'm specifically referring to the men's college football team, called "Volunteers", or just "The Vols".
There was a sizeable number of Tennesseans who volunteered to follow future president Andrew Jackson to New Orleans to fight and repulse an invasion by British forces during the War of 1812. Later, Tennesseans helped the Texans at the Battle of the Alamo during Texas's War of Independence (and all died, along with the Texans). The title "The Volunteers" stuck with the state from that point on.

There were 15 Tennesseans there, led by the famous frontiersman David Crocket, who at the time was a Tennessee State Congressman.
