Guadalcanal - BlackVoid vs. Testarossa

Post by BlackVoid »

After the fiasco against Aztec, where I lost the majority of my naval bombers due to 2 day turns (they launched from Truk immediately after arrival to the theatre), I started another Guadalcanal scenario as IJN. This time against Testarossa.

It seems we can do 2 turns/day with 1 day turns.

I will only post highlight combat reports and will not discuss strategy beforehand. Testarossa is welcome to join in.

A few turns have passed already. Allies landed and took Lunga and also landed Tulagi. CVs seem to be supporting this operation off the coast of Guadalcanal (no confirmed sighting yet though).

Otherwise no major action yet. 1 IJN sub ordered back to Rabaul ran into the invasion fleet and got sunk (only ship sunk so far). I wanted to replace the crappy commander, but did not watch the route the boat took. Last turn US sub Grayling near Kavieng was caught by my ASW grp and was hit by 2 DCs.
Testarossa is regularly bombing my troops on the Kokoda with P-39s - that is the only action so far in the air apart from a few recon flights.

My major problem at this point is pilot and AC pools - they are quite low, but I must suck up the pilot replacements before I can start any training program.

PC Ch 5
PC Ch 4
PG Nikkai Maru
MSW W.20
APD APD-37
APD APD-32
APD APD-31
DD Namikaze
DD Nokaze

Allied Ships
SS Gudgeon, hits 5, on fire, heavy damage *sinks

In 2 days, 2 subs hit, good news for IJN.

Defenders at Tulagi hold. Kokoda trail is bombed again by P-39s.
Classified: IJN lands at secret base...

Bad news: Testarossa cannot load troops/fuel at SOPAC bases. What is going on? A bug in Andrew's conversion or bug in WITP? Or is there some other explanation for this?

Empty ships cannot be unloadad, that is normal.

I tried the scenario in head-to-head mode and everything looks OK. I really hope you can sort it out.

My retiring ASW TF runs into damaged Grayling and sinks it.

PC Ch 4
PG Nikkai Maru
MSW W.20
APD APD-37
APD APD-32

Allied Ships
SS Grayling, hits 6, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*
------------------------------------------------

Other actions
- 6 Zeros above Kokoda trail fail to intercept 33 P-39s bombing
- Japanese shock attack on Tulagi fails to achieve result - stalemate on Tulagi atm
- Allied convoy continues to unload at Lunga and Tulagi
- Suspected CV TF spotted south of Guadalcanal

I will not risk interfering with the Allied operation at Lunga. Lunga is extended range for my Zeroes and I do not have that many fighters anyway. Attacking would probably mean some torpedoed allied ships, but I would loose too many planes. Lunga is also too far away for surface ships from Rabaul and Shortland cannot be properly protected. So I am now waiting for my CVs to arrive. When I engage, I want to do it on my terms.

Map data file was in the wrong place. Now it's clear (duh) that you can't load troops or fuel from empty hex, nor can you unload supply into the sea hex (on the map it was a port, in the map data file it was an ocean hex). That's why buttons were grayed out.

Quiet turn. A big allied TF is spotted heading towards PM.
Today's highlight: japanese bombardment on the Kokoda trail causes casualties to the attacker.
-----------------------------
Ground combat at 55,93

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2103 troops, 15 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 1490 troops, 17 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
------------------------------

- Allies bombard Tulagi with ships and troops, about 60 japanese reported dead.

I could possibly save Tulagi by bringing in more troops, but I would loose those eventually, so I sit tight.

Allies pay a heavy price for trying to supply PM with a large convoy.
21 Betties launch from LAE with escorts. Amazingly, no japanese planes were lost in this raid.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 53,95

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 22
A6M3 Zero x 7
G4M1 Betty x 21

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 4 damaged

Allied Ships
PG Swan, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*
AK Empire Eagle, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AK Murada, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Neleus, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage *sinks*
AK Idomeneus, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
181 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Troops were also on board.

Tulagi is again bombarded from the sea. A large surface (CV?) TF was spotted heading towards Guadalcanal. Reports indicate 5 BBs, but I am a bit skeptical about that.

That's cool man. I haven't played the turn yet, but reading this from work is awesome.

I was thinking about shutting down Lae before convoy arrival, but decided to invest some time in training of bomber crews.

That was strange attack near Tulagi. I specifically ordered troops to hold cause they had high disruption and fatigue from previous day when they took Tulagi from Japan. Wierd.

Testarossa, that is no problem. Very busy days behind me as well. Yesterday our wargame 1848 was published by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. It is a free download.
This is the first hungarian wargame, demand was so high yesterday evening that the server was inaccessible. Most TV channels reported the game in the evening news. Radio, TV interviews will follow. [:)]

English version will be out late summer for FREE. The sequel is in the works and scheduled for a Christmas release.

Back to topic.

Continuing heavy bombing of LAE. This time some of my damaged planes that I could not evacuate are destroyed.
CV hornet was spotted near Guadalcanal.

Yes it is the 1848 revolution. Of course it does not cover the revolution itself, but the civil/independence war that followed. In the spring of 1849 the Hungarian army defeated Austria in several big battles and liberated the whole country, but failed to crush Austria decisevely. In June the Russian army intervened with 200000 troops and together with the Austrian army they defeated Hungary.

Download is also here, but its all in hungarian....

Interesting things happen this turn.
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/18/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1013 encounters mine field at Noumea (66,117)

Allied Ships
DM Preble, Mine hits 1, on fire - I was hoping for something bigger, but allied CVs are still near Guadalcanal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 65,81

Japanese Ships
DD Hatakaze
CVE Unyo
DD Kazegumo
DD Ayanami
DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri
DD Amagiri
DD Oboro
DD Akebono
DD Sazanami
DD Ushio
DD Satsuki
DD Minazuki
DD Matsukaze

Allied Ships
SS Tambor, hits 4, on fire, heavy damage - does not sink
--------------------------------------------------

In this game every sub encounter resulted in DC hits. No torps were even fired by subs. I have to say that this is very unrealistic. I forgot to post, but last turn a veteran sub of mine was sunk near Guadalcanal. Subs are always detected and depth charged. Sometimes I wonder if the designer ever tested sub encounters in the game.

I've been saying this for two years now. No joy. Apparently "working as designed".[8|] Well, like the majority have concluded, it is a design problem then.

In the game the best use for subs is to kill cripples or lay mines. Any attempt at historical use results in a sunk sub. Not always but way too often.

300+ AC flying every day from Port Moresby is also sci-fi.

This was an exciting turn, I will post all the reports. 2 CV TFs near Milne Bay launch strikes against my bombardment TF. Unfortunately my BBs were spotted last turn and Testarossa's CVs intervened.
