Rising Sun; Fading Star - Cap_and_Gown (allied) v Grotius (Jap)

Post by CapAndGown »

Ok, this is going to be a dual AAR. Grotius will have his own AAR which I will not read and he won't be reading this.

The scenario is Rising Sun. One day turns. Historical first turn on, Suprise on, Sub doctrines OFF for both sides, FOW on (of course!), Allied damage control, variable reenforcement.

OK, I have no idea what I am doing. I suppose I should actually read the manual. [8|] But this is what I found from my short foray against the AI and reading some of the AARs here.

The major problem the allies seem to face is a lack of air support. Protecting my navy depends on my air assets, but protecting my air assets depends on my navy (need to avoid those nasty bombardments). There only seem to be enough base units to make a very limited number of strong points that I can operate from. I plan on moving all the Dutch base forces in Java to either Sorebaja or Batavia and massing my air forces there. The British, Dutch and U.S. navies will base in Java. I expect to have 3 surface combat TFs of 15 ships each with 2 based in Sorebaja and 1 in Batavia (I may switch that depending on his disposition of forces). From there I plan on trying a series of Balikpapan type raids against his landings in Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumatra.

To make this strategy work, I have to try to keep the skies over the Java sea freindly. My level bombers will be tasked with suppressing any airfields he grabs on Borneo.

In PI I plan on retreating most people to Clark AFB, but I also plan on holding Manilla until he takes it from me, as well as Bataan as a final last stand.

In java, the base forces will all immediately head to Singapore. I plan on moving the AVG to Singapore and put up a wall of CAP while my engineers work on the forts. I have to wonder though: how long should I try to delay him on the way to Singapore, or should I just fall back without a fight?

Also, do I need supply to be delivered to Java, Singapore? Do they generate supply? There is a slash after the supply available number with a number given. I am assuming this is the amount of supply generated at that location each day??

Also, is there a way to evacuate ships off the map? I have all these AK/AP/TK/AO that I doubt I will have any use for. Even if I need some supply delivered to Java, I have many more of these ships than I need. I would rather just send them home.

Any further thoughts? What about Burma? Should I bother with Rangoon? Make him fight towards it? Or just withdraw to Mandalay?

This should be interesting watching my butt handed to me in a sling. [:D]

Hmph! I post my AAR and ask for help and what do I get--nothing! Grotius posts 14 hours later and already he's got 5 replies. Bah, I say, Bah!

How is that for a start?

Gee, thanks! [&o] I will certainly take your ideas into consideration. I was especially thinking that Force Z's first order of business was keeping the Japs out of Kuching.

I did find some of your ideas inapplicable to this scenario, however, since it is not a full map scenario and only lasts 3 months. So disbanding stuff and pulling out fractional units for later rebuilding are right out.

What I am most curious about is your idea about moving your airforce around so you don't get plastered by Jap bombers. From playing the AI, what I have found is that while the P-40's are not great against Zero's, they aren't that bad either, especially with good pilots. The problem seems to be massing enough of them in one place to actually matter. I was thinking of having just a few bases where I could mass my fighters and have my navy sit underneath their CAP. I wanted to focus on Batavia and Sorebaja as my two strong points. (Also Singapore and Clark Field, but without a navy) Once Clark Field and Singapore go, I would pull those units back to Java. The AVG and P-40 groups in PI seem to do rather well.

Edit: Glad I saw your post before you edited it! Lots of good stuff in there. Hope you saved it. Would be good as a general introduction to all newbies like me. In fact, I think you should repost it!

OK, I would like some help in planning my defense of Malaya. Basically, what I am wondering is whether I should stand and fight anywhere, or just run away.

For instance, I know I need to hold Kuatan (if possible) until the evacuees from Khota Bharu can make it there. I also need to hold Mersing untill units in northern Malaya can make it to Johore Bharu. But what about making a stand in Kuala Lumpur? It has level 5 forts and one brigade with 50 prepartion points. Malacca has level 3 forts and one brigade with 51 preperation points. Should I fight for these two locations? Johore Bharu has level 5 forts and one brigade with 51 preparation points. I plan on sending this brigade to Mersing right away, but I am thinking that I will let in continue to accumulate prep points for Johore Bharu. Should I fight for Johore Bharu?

Basically, I am unsure about how long I should try to stand and fight anywhere north of Jahore Bharu. Thoughts?

RE: Advise sought

Post by CapAndGown »

Well, we're off.

Sitrep:
Burma I am heading a bunch of my base forces for Mandalay. I want to increase the airfield size their to reduce the malaria effects. Mandalay will be where I make my stand in Burma. This will be where everybody will eventually head. I am moving an additional baseforce to Rangoon. I want to try to get in at least on shipment of supplies into there before I have to evacuate. I will fly in the AVG when the supply convoy is about to arrive to provide CAP.

Malaya
All my base forces are heading for Singapore. I moved most of my aircraft in Malaya to Singapore as well plus the AVG. Singapore is the only spot on the penisula where I am building forts. Want to save my supply for my aircraft. I will try to ship in supplies under the cover of my fighters. The level bombers at Singapore are maingly going to be used for suppressing airfields.

Force Z is now loitering between Borneo and Sumatra to interfere with any landings at Mersing or Kuching.

Sumatra
Palembang got some fighters moved in. I also am mining the harbor. The base force at Teotkteolang (whatever [8|]) is marching there. I also moved in some air transport to pick up the base forces on the south side of the island and move them into Palembang. I also moved two Dutch recon squadrons to Bankha and the other base next to it. They can do some recon and perhaps attract the attention of his airforce away from other valuable targets.

Java
My base forces here are heading either to Batavia or Sorebaja. These will be my strong points. Most of my combat units are heading for these two locations as well. I left some of the short legged Dutch recon squadrons in some of the evacuated bases to give the appearance that I am still manning those bases. Hopefully they will attract some bombs that might other wise have gone to hit more valuable targets.

Borneo
Balikpapan will be my strong point here. The base forces on the east side of the island, except that at Tarakan, have been ordered to march to Balikpapan. I also moved in another air transport unit to pick up the base forces on the west side of the island. I have tankers draining both Balikpapan and Tarakan of fuel for shipment to Sorebaja.

The naval surface units concentrated around Bjandermajsin (sp?) have been ordered to head for Kendari where they will try to interfere with any attempted landing on Celebes or Ambion.

Philippines
I scattered my PbYs around a bit to give me better naval search capability. I hope to put the B-17s and the fighters out of there eventually. For now the B-17s are on naval search. Most units on Luzon are now heading for Clark Field. I plan on holding Manilla, Clark field and Bataan for as long as possible. Bataan, of course, will be my last stand.

My subs all sortied to either Palau, Pescadores or Cahm Rahn bay with home base of Sorebaja. The S boats headed for the southern Philippines.

I organized a large supply convoy from Trincomalee to head to Java. Some other AKs are headed to Darwin to pick up supplies from that location.

Let the fun begin!

Well, a Jap sub sunk one of my tankers fleeing from the PI. And some Jakes flying off his cruisers at Legaspi put some bombs into two other ships. Not much else in the way of air action this turn.

Still no attack at Khota Bharu. My units have now managed to make it out of there in good shape and are 60 miles out of Kuantan.

Grotius has now move AC units into Songkhia. Don't know what all he has there. I will recon the base from Sumatra and bomb it from Singapore. I have 3 Blenheim sqdrns set to bomb from 6000 feet escorted by the AVG (set to 50% CAP) and 2 sqdrn of Buffalos (90% CAP). Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I imagine now that Grotius has rested up his airforce in Indochina and Formosa he will be making some big raids on Singapore and Clark Field. Hopefully the P-40's at both locations can inflict some damage.

He has retired his CVL back towards Palau. I imagine he is going to use it support and invasion of either Ambion, Menando or Davao, or perhaps all three. I am racing to gather two surface TFs at Kendari to try to intercept any moves to Menando or Ambion.

Hi, When you write your report to your higher ups don't say "I decided to flee" but instead say "I am conducting an orderly retreat to a new defense line" You'll keep your job a bit longer. (withdraw and pullback also sound much better then "Flee")
(really nice screen shots)

I guess that means talking about "headlong flight" is right out? [:D]

Thanks for the comment on the screenies. Will try to illustrate this AAR a good deal to allow people to more clearly visualize my plans, etc.

RE: Fleeing the PI

Post by CapAndGown »

The situation remains mostly quiet. My airfield attack on Songkhia did not come off. Turns out I did not set it as a target, and even if I had tried, most of the Blenheims could not reach. [8|] Plus, he has not been hitting my forces in Malaya or the PI. Either he is resting the groups, repositioning them, or perhaps he is using his Zeros to LRCAP various stuff and so doesn't want to send out his bombers. I have been expecting some big raids, but nothing so far. I did notice that he had put some Nells on naval search.

His I-124 scores again hitting Dos Hermanos which had earlier been hit by some Jakes. 85 float damage. Oh well, it is just one AK.

I spent some PPs to try to pull the base force at Jolo off that island with the help of a passing AP. Also spent some more PPs to pull a Dutch base force off of Lombok. Going to send it to Balikpapan.

He may be preparing to invade Kuching. Got a spotting report saying 3 ships were heading in that directoin. Force Z is still lurking, waiting to intervene. Plus I moved some torpedo bombers into Pontianak. I didn't move them to Singkawang because I thought he might try bombing that place in preparation for an invasion. So I have fighters in Singkawang flying CAP. Next turn, after the TIVa's have rested I will transfer them from Pontianak to Singkawang (a one hex jump will not fatigue them much at all.) Maybe I should move some Martins in as well, even though the airbase there is already overcommitted.

Kuching it is!

Post by CapAndGown »

Well Grotius sent me the combat replay. Further spotting reports confirm that Kuching is his intended target. He is bringing an awful lot of ships too! I imagine this invasion will be supported by his BBs. Well, that what Repulse and PoW are for. Plus, the Brits have good night experience numbers and supposedly their torp work.

My only problem is that he may not get there until the day time. I would rather fight a night action to avoid his naval AC which are sure to be on naval attack. I don't know how this is going to work out. I am going to leave Force Z in position, ready to attack, and hope for the best. I kinda doubt I will be able to keep him out though. I will have to move a bunch a Martins into Balikpapan in preparation for flattening the airfield there once he takes it. The TIVa's will be moved to Singkawang this turn and prepare for naval attacks. I am somewhat supprised that he didn't his Singkawang this turn with his bombers. In fact, his bombers have been very quiet--nothing in Malaya and nothing in the PI. At least it is giving my engineers time to work on reparing the airfied at Clark Field which was very badly hit on the first day.

Only one minor air action occured: I bombed his division at Khota Bharu. 3 Nates were flying LRCAP. The AVG blew them away with no losses. Good training!

Death Ride of Force Z

Post by CapAndGown »

Well, once I actually got the turn, and not just the replay, my intel picture was off the map. He is bringing everything including, no doubt, a whole bunch of kitchen sinks to Kuching. The lead TF is reported to be composed of AKs. It is 4 hexes out of Kuching. This should put it 2 hexes from Kuching during the night phase. So Force Z is heading at flank speed to try for a mid-ocean intercept! If I can hit the transports without having to go through his surface combat groups I may put some serious hurt on him. I also have react on so that come morning, if anything is left my force should react into Kuching harbor. Hope I have enough oil left in the bunkers to go the distance!

First major surface engagement

Post by CapAndGown »

Well, my plans at Kuching didn't work out the way I had planned. I should have realized when I saw his SC TF 5 hexes out from Kuching that he was planning a bombardment. So Force Z reacted to intercept the bombardment rather than hitting the transports as I planned. Then they bugged out. So nary a crack at the transports. My subs did get hits on two of his transports but the casualty count was low. And my torpedo bombers accomplished nothing.

I got very lucky in one respect--during the air phase I got a message that 18 Nells were unable to locate Force Z. So I escaped a torpedo attack. But now I am faced with a problem--there were an awful lot of torpedos expended in the engagement (only one hit, against the Jintsu). Now I need to reload torps, but as far as I know cruisers can only reload torps at size 9 ports. So where to reload?

At any rate, I am going to have to get ready for an extend bombing campaign against Kuching in order to keep it surpressed. It is about time to move some B-17s out of the PI and into Java.

Except for PTs, it's a size 8 port for loading torpedoes. So Soerabaja is it.

This is more of a problem for the Japs IMHO, since until they take Singapore the nearest torpedoes are at Hong Kong.

Well, Force Z got off rather light, but they didn't accomplish their mission. The Danae is out of action wtih 67 sys damage. The rest of the force didn't suffer at all. In fact Repulse which took 6 hits actually has 0 sys damage. The TF, minus Danae, is headed back to Sorebaja to reload. I was almost tempted to send them back into action again, but they spent some op points refueling the destroyers so they would not arrive their until after dawn meaning I would most likely get hit by Nells flying out of Saigon.

I am getting prepped to run a sustained bombing campaign against Kuching. I flew in a bunch of Martins to Balikpapan and most of my Brewsters (since they have the range for escorting). Once he taks the airfield I need to start the bombing. I am bringing in more base forces into Balikpapan to support the AC their. Right now I have 27 AC support with 77 AC. B-17s in the PI will also be moved to Java for bombing Kuching. All of this is costing me PPs of course, so it may take a while to have enough base forces and bombers in place. I suppose I can also send Force Z back to bombard the place.

Meanwhile, I have 2 SC TFs in between Menando and Ambion waiting for something to develop there. So far I have not seen anything coming out of Palau. Pretty soon I will need to pull my fighters out of the PI to support my defense of Java, especially if he is able to get Kuching operational. I am also thinking of moving the AVG to Java.

Crap. Kuching has already fallen. The bombers are going into action right away!

Plus, he takes Alor Star. No biggie as I had already abandoned that base. I will make a stand at Kuala Lumpur.

Got a radio intercept of something heading for either Davao or Menando, but no sighting. No trace of his CVL. My TF continue to lie in ambush for landing on Menando and Ambion. I am considering trying to interfere with a landing at Davao.
