Damn ! Luskan is right, I should have just concentrated all of my aircraft on the one target, I was infact hopping that all of the aircraft would go in at once, but the didn't happen and so they got chewed. But it was one hell of a airbattle ! I would not believe all that you read in the combat report, as both sides have exaggerated their claims. (Luskan's pilots more than mine[;)])

Wow.

How did Raver split his targets -- by attacking at both day and night? I see only attacks on Rangoon.

A turn later - the same airbattle over Rangoon recommenced, with Raver sending all his planes in at the airfield. The allied cap was depleted from last turn - so he got another hundred of my planes on the ground (I don't care just yet - still got enough planes. I can't afford to loose pilots) and I didn't.

I lost 30 planes in the air, 24 of those cost me pilots. Mostly crap. In return I savaged Raver's inbound raid, taking lots (about 40) wellingtons down, plus half a dozen to a dozen of the other types (don't have the c.r - raver will post). lotsof pilots getting their 7th and 8th kills.

he did do more damage to the airfield, but it is almost all patched up and my squadrons have enough undamaged planes (and support squadrons at moulmein) to do it all over again.

One turn later - the allied air raids stop ;) One turn was probably for Raver to rest his pilots, cycle them through a little - for me it meant I pumped tens of thousands of new supply into Rangoon and got half of my damaged planes back online again.

I bet that luskan is now wishing that he never sent the bombardment TF at all. They did very little damage and got hit again out bound. As Luskan has now found out PNG is one huge airbase that is also crawling with troops.

Luskan is off for the next week, something about drinking lots of wine in South Oz.

RE: Luskan got slapped !

Post by Raverdave »

Well Luskan is back from his drunken sojourn of South Australia's wine area, but it has done little to improve his game play. I planned a few night raids against Rangoon, but the effort was not worth the result. Meanwhile Luskan is still bleeting about his cockup with the bombardment run some number of turns ago. It's a nice feeling to at last know that I have hurt the Japs after putting up with months and months for getting kicked across the map.

RE: Luskan got slapped !

Post by Luskan »

Well, things have progressed, adn not in my favour.

I did blow a transport ship to hell with a sub in the last week's play or so. That is about all for my triumphs (stole a few more little bases, shipping oil, researching new aircraft, churning out guns and butter etc).

Raver then put 10 aps into Akyab - probably to support his fighter squadrons which are to escort his bombers back to rangoon once they find their feet again. I got ambitious and decided it was time for Akyab to fall. I put a few ships (about 100) into some TFs and let them loose - however ahead of them, I sent in a 12 ship MSW tf to clear out the mines at Akyab that burnt me over 3 months ago in the game.

The MSWs didn't get to akyab. They were hit by abour 400+ allied level bombers that came in at 6000 and wiped them off the face of the earth. Economically speaking the bombs Raver dropped in that air raid were worth more than the 12 MSWs he sank.

In the face of that sort of air power, I pulled my ships back and aborted the whole damned thing.

CA Mogami survived the trip home after the Lae incident, and after 2 consecutive screw ups on the Naval war front, I'm getting worried.

Lightnings over Rabaul - not the natural kind. Not real happy as I don't feel like I gained enough ground the early game. Raver's got a 4 BB bombardment group taking regular runs at Attu in the north that I can do nothing about.

Irritating signs of decay aronud the edges . . .

Indeed the rot has set in. Attu is about to be taken, just the first of many. Lightnings over Rabal is simply the first real sign of your downfall.

Day Air attack on Rabaul , at 61,88

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 24 Oh so cool !
F-5A Lightning x 5
B-17E Fortress x 184

Lightnings showing up in late October? Yep, that's pretty much on schedule. But since there was no Japanese CAP, it didn't make much difference this time.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I've been trying to figure out where his CVs are, and if I can, what size TFs they are in. but to date Intel has been somewhat lacking. I;m now at that point where I am ready to take on his CVs, solong as the situation is in my favour. But Luskan has been laying low. He acknowledges that he has to have a CV Vs CV now for the longer he waits the less chance he has of pulling off a victory.

Not exactly what I said. I said if I can use my Cvs to sink enough transports now - it doesn't matter if I loose them in a CV vs CV battle later - they will have served their purpose.

The longer that CV vs CV battle waits however, the harder I'm going to hurt. Unless I pull off something pretty special. Unlikely since Raver has subscribed to the death star method of CV raids (something he said he'd never do).

The woman is off to rainy smelly melbourne for the weekend (she plans to check out the melbourne my restaurant rules restaurant - we've been to sydney and adelaide so far - pretty sad for two people who don't watch the show and refuse to vote for anything/anyone on reality tv on principle) so I can do some serious turns.

Will check my email every 3 or 4 hours from friday night through to Sunday afternoon. With Raver's invasion underway it should be interesting.

Let me ask a serious question. You've been doing this for a while now. How is the enjoyment level?

They enjoyment is always high for me - in some other games there just hasn't been the tension I always get when the file is loading and I'm fretting over what is about to happen - in this game even during the quiet spots I was engrossed in running my economy etc. etc.

Our rate of turns has fallen from a regular couple of turns a night to a turn a night or so (although two last night, and hopefully a dozen or so over the weekend) which is a pain - although even when life interferes with turns and I can't do them, I'm usually wondering what is going to happen next.

As for this turn, Raver invaded and took Attu from me. Cost him about 600 men all told (dead - thousands of "casualties") becuse he tried to land a division on a small island in the face of a small island defence. He took it, and I let him.

In other news a few betties skragged some transports in the Bay of Bengal retreating from Akyab. 3 transports were torpedoed and Raver learns that his devotion to night bombing . . . doesn't produce the results the combat report says it does ;)
