Another day passes. I spot no less than three TFs headed down the strait between Sumatra and Borneo - one seems to be headed for Pontiniak, the other two for Palembang. BB Yamashiro has been sighted by search aircraft.
All I can say is, this may well be a wreck of almost Midway-like proportions in the making here. He must have about 30-50 ships here, running right into those 4 carriers of mine.
It's going to be a battle royale tomorrow. My cruisers are headed for Palembang, with the AVG on top cover - battle is imminent! Royal Sovereign and Revenge actually -overshot- the Jap force (so much for them being slow, I underestimated their speed), so they are sheepishly backpedalling and will also engage tomorrow.
And my Libs knocked out a few Betties today, which suits me.
Cant wait for the next turn!
(Oh, and I spotted the KB - south of Gili Gili. Har. Nuthin there.)

I'd avoid the KB in the early game unless you can squish them in a 5 or 6 versus 1 or 2 carrier battle. And even then you might lose a carrier or two. The Japanese just have better planes and aircrew at this point in the war, and you don't have much to gain. Better to wait and snipe at battleships and things like that where the KB isn't, imho. [:)]

The ambush worked! Well, 2/3rds of it worked.
My cruiser squadron based out of Batavia came under Nell/Zero attack from Singapore - I wasn't aware he had Zeroes there, he has only used Oscars so far. The Zeroes slaughter the AVG Tomahawks and put four torpedoes into the TF, three of them into one cruiser which I doubt will make it home. Thats the bad news.
The good news.
The carrier force did what they do, and launched volley after volley of air attacks into a transport TF in the middle of the Java Sea which was headed for Pontiniak. The Swordfish actually did nothing, but the Dauntlesses wrecked the TF and even the Devastators managed to get some 22 inchers into Jap ships. Unfortunately no Jap ship larger than a CA was hit, so I consider Simon to have got off lightly. The carriers are running south at full speed now. They will remain in bomber range of Pontiniak at the end of the days movement, if he for some reason doesnt bother to delay and charges on, he'll get bombed again. The carriers are sadly in range of his LBA, I just hope the CAP deters them. But my heart will be in my mouth for a while.
The real heroes were unlikely ones. Royal Sovereign and Revenge! And to think a few days I was writing the old battleships off as "mostly useless, I probably won't use them". They slammed two Jap TFs at Balikpapan hard. 15 inch rounds were pouring into the (surprised) Jap ships. Awe.
Now he knows all this naval power is there, of course, he'll be bringing his Betties to bear. All my warships are instructed to pull back at top speed now the hurt has been put on, I just hope they manage to escape without mauling. The true success of this operation will really be revealed tomorrow, I would say.

Another day of extremely high intensity combat around the north Java Sea. Pretty gripping stuff!
The cruiser force I mentioned strikes at Palembang, but runs into BB Yamashiro, which sadly the carriers didnt go for. Yamashiro, in two engagements, sinks one cruiser and damages another so badly I scuttle her in my turn. A third CA is heavily damaged and finished off by Nells in the morning. The rest of the fighting pans out as expected. Aside from Yamashiro, Japanese ships suffer to the 8" of the CAs, the Jap CLs show their inferiority to Allied CLs as 5.9" bounces off De Ruyter but De Ruyters 6" proves lethally effect, while Jap destroyer torpedoes are evil weapons and US destroyers seem in surface combat to be utterly useless aside from as fodder. Still, the Jap force is attritioned to my satisfaction.
Lex and Enterprise launch another raid of Dauntlesses at another Jap transport convoy even as they sail to the south, and blow a lot of ships to scrap metal. Sadly the Swordfish dont fly for some reason - all seems in order, range, fatigue, morale... maybe the Brits are too embarassed after their failures yesterday. Oh well, they'll be fresh for more killin tomorrow.
Allied LBA is a damp squib, a few Martins sortie, hit nothing. The Jap torpedo bombers only launch one sortie, finishing off that allied CA. LRCAP seems effective in dissuading them.
Allied intentions in the Battle of Java as it unfolds for tomorrow are thus :-
The Dutch PT boats at Sumatra, now the hurt has been put on the Enemy, will sally forth to Palembang and mop up limping AKs. Yamashiro and its attendent surface assets has been seen sailing back to Singapore - doubtless those carriers put the wind up the Jap! So the PTs will charge in their absence!
The American cruiser force, now seriously depleted - down to one cruiser plus escorts, half dozen ships - will sally forth with Warhawk LRCP to Toboali, where the enemy is unloading in a small port.
The Anglo-American carriers are headed west now, for the strait between Java and Sumatra, from a SSE direction. The plan is to take them away from the many Jap bases at Borneo now, and as they go, in passing they'll be in range of Palembang and Toboali. I plan on continuing them to sail west until they are out of the theatre. Lex and Saratoga are in bad need of a refit and their aircrews are getting tired (and nowhere to rest in theatre which is safe), the British carriers, without American backup, just dont pack enough punch to make the risk of their lingering worthwhile.
The fighter aircraft at Batavia have been rotating to maintain reasonable LRCAP over the cruiser taskforce as it goes about its business in such dangerous waters. The torpedo bombers there, escapees from Sumatra, have been too tired to set to engage but thats about to change. I set the Beauforts and Swordfish there to naval attack finally with several tired fighter squadrons as escort. Hopefully my LBA will now take up the slack as the carriers begin to pull back.
Royal Sov and Revenge - I did consider sending them north but on reflection decided it would be suicide. Even if I could get them in under fighter CAP - certainly possible I feel - I'd never get em out again. They are headed south to Koepang. This is itself a dangerous trip - currently at Soerabaja with Jap airbases very near on the south coast of Borneo. They get some Warhawk LRCAP too.
So that covers Java.
Elsewhere Zeroes and Betties humiliate the Aussies at Darwin. The Aussie Wirraways are absolutely pathetic. In two days they have failed to score a single kill while they've been cut to ribbons. Come on guys, pick up the ball. I'm going to rotate out the worthless Wirraways and swap em for the Warhawks just coming into Brisbane now, but it'll be a while.
Noumea is a frenzy of activity as base forces get set up there and fighters unload. 70 fighters at Noumea now, a mix of Warhawks and Airacobras and about the same number headed for Australia. When those are in theatre I'll be happy, I'll pull back the Wirraways I've been using at Port Moresby and replace them with real aircraft. Incidentally BC Repulse is on the way to Noumea and will form the core of another one of my cruiser TFs.
The Japs are taking Gasmata, evacuating Rabaul is going to be tough.
The KB, I believe it to be, is sighted between Port Moresby and the Aus coast, headed NW. Pondering sending my CentPac carrier TF down to the South Pacific to play around Rabaul in their absence.
CentPac is quiet. NorPac is quiet. Wuchow is besieged and outnumbered but not taken - yet. Myritkina is at stalemate - suits me. I'm actually fairly confident of the Burma Road staying open, believe it or not.
All in all, I think the Allied war effort is so far, touch wood, doing rather well, though its early days yet. Aside from China. Ugh.

The incredible slaughter in the north Java Sea continues for the third day, becoming a bloody battle of attrition. The unleashed Allied LBA torpedoes the hell out of his transports leaving Palembang, his Nells, in turn, wipe out that US cruiser force leaving only DD remnants behind.
The Brits get their finger out and the Swordfish join the Dauntlesses in punishing the transports off Taboali again, under Wildcat escort, sending another brace of Japanese transports and their escorts to Davy Jones locker. The number of kills boggles the mind, I think he's lost almost as many ships in the last three days as he had lost in the whole war up to this point.
Its lucky I concentrated my fighters in Batavia. The Warhawks and Brewsters stand down, the AVG and Wirraways step up to the plate set to 60 percent escort. His ground assault on Palembang is repulsed but he'll have it tomorrow, Toboali is his already and will doubtless be used as a forward airbase - the bomber squadrons, Martins and Fortresses further south at Soerabaja, are resting, but will nail the airbase there the day after tomorrow.
Submarines lie in wait between Singapore and the action, looking to murderise stragglers as they limp home.
Allied intentions - the Allied CVs should just about be in the Indian Ocean tomorrow. Yamashiro was spotted again outside Palembang - maybe he's going for a bombardment on Batavia. If so he's in the strife, my carriers will be sixty miles away. Morale and fatigue of the torpedo LBA is good, they are going for a repeat performance. Royal Sov and Revenge will be in the clear after tomorrow I think, this'll be the Jap last chance to torpedo them.
Damaged stragglers on 0 flot damage limp out of Soerabaja headed south. DDs and lesser vessels. I wouldnt be surprised if they get wiped out, but we can hope. He is obviously going for a pincer, with Balikpapan taken so early (and riskily, Royal Sov punished him for it), with the goal of sealing Java off completely. The night combat rating of RN ships are actually pretty good so get them in the right place and they will deliver.
The only problem is getting them to the right place without getting sunk as they are horribly undergunned for AA combat.
Repulse is OK and POW almost as good as a US BB after its first upgrade at AA.

I think the naval power I put there really shocked him. I noticed he wasnt putting a/c on the bases on northern Borneo which is why I sent in Royal Sov and Revenge - Amboina was a threat but that was the only one, and they managed to get in and out quicker than I expected. Even 20 knots is a reasonable distance when you put them on full speed.

Anyway, a fourth day, another day of waves of stringbags. They strike Palembang this time - the carriers are in the Indian Ocean but the a/c fly over Sumatra to hit Yamashiro. The Dauntlesses have 500lbers at that range and they just bounce off - but the Swordfish put 7 torpedoes into the battleship and it sinks. Fear the biplane!
Yamashiro was the only high value target my recon spotted in the area. With the BB gone and his APs and AKs thoroughly mauled, I see no reason to risk my carriers further. They sail west at full speed, sticking together still for now, to get out of Betty range. Doubtless there are many Top Gun-like scenes of riotous cheering on board, they certainly racked up the kills, and without a single hostile bomb landing on a carrier deck. The Brits are going back to India, the Yanks have a long trip ahead of them - to Pearl Harbour for refit and AA upgrades, going via Perth and Auckland. Sadly we aint going to be hearing of Lexington and Enterprise's daring exploits again for many months.
The rest of the campaign in Java is going to go the Japs way. All surface forces are being evacuated. Only the aircraft will put up further resistance, but surely with his massive preponderence of air power all I can do is blunt the sword a little.
So, time to look elsewhere really, I think Java has become less interesting, the end result now inevitable. In Burma 7th Armoured will soon be at Jorhat. I know the Imperial Guard are hard but he's got a lot of Brits and Indians waiting for him there - 2 divs infantry, 3 divs armour, 4 engineers all fortifying - surely He Shall Not Pass.
China is a train wreck, and I dunno how to stop the wreck. I've got 3 squadrons of Dakotas now routinely supplying the Chinese, and more are on the way. My sole plan is to pump in supplies and hope beans and bullets stiffen Chinese resistance, I dont have any counter offensives or anything planned.
Port Moresby and Gili Gili are as tough as I can make them. Rabaul is history, evac impossible except by sub - looks like I'll be picking up fragments and taking them to Brisbane to rebuild there.
CentPac I am now eying closely. I've got ~200 assault points on Canton Island, ~50 assault points on Palmyra, >1000 assault points at Pearl, ~500 assault points at Noumea and Suva and Pago Pago are almost bare. Pago Pago has a lot of fuel dumped off their now and its my midway point, where I set the AKs destinations to on the Pacific Run. But I'm wary of spreading out too thin, surely one division isnt really going to stop him much if he decides to take one of those atolls, and it'll be hard to evacuate - I have visions of 20,000 marines being dragged off via hellship to build roads in Burma, and thats not good. Naval assets in the Pacific look like a whole lot of DDs, a tiny handful of cruisers, Repulse down at Noumea now, and a three CV air combat TF. Very sparse with the KB about and such a huge area to defend. I think I'm going to leave the situation as is for now and simply react to what he seems to be up to.
He's busy with Rabaul at the moment anyway, I imagine Port Moresby will be next, so I'm working on turning Gili Gili into a nice little base so he has two bases to crack rather than just one. I figure while he tangles with PM he isnt tangling at Canton Island. Quiet day. Batavia gets raided by torpedo bombers and DD Vampire catches a fish. My mistake, I thought i set all those fighters there to escort - apparently I only set a few. This is rectified.
I'm massing subs in SWPAC for an evacuation of Rabaul, I estimate no longer than 7 more days for the Aussies there and I wanna get out what I can. I would use fast transport (Repulse is at Noumea after all, and itching to fire the big guns again) but, while KB is lost from sight atm, I suspect its around there somewhere.
I've called off the carrier raid in CentPac. The Java thing is over so a demonstration serves no purpose - and its AA upgrade time.

Quiet-ish. I forgot about a replenishment TF between Darwin and Port Moresby, and KB just erased it. Least I know where the KB is though it cost a lot to find out...
Repulse, some cruisers and a whole slew of destroyers sally forth towards Rabaul, aiming to rescue the Aussie Bde there. I want the Bde out at least. Forts at Port Moresby on naval search will have to give me some warning of the KB turning around, least so we hope.
Tomorrow, maximum effort against Mandalay with Liberators and the long range Chinese bombers - he's got a Zero squadron there pinned down by runway damage. Also while his Zeroes dont fly they dont blow away my Blenheims and Buffalos bombing the Imperial Guard.

...reinforcements will be Formidable and Long Island this month on the naval side - pthbt. Don't really have audacious uses for either. I notice lots of Aussie Kittyhawks are due too. Excellent. The Aussies can attempt to redeem themselves of the disgrace the Wirraways suffered at Darwin.
Just got Warspite too, who at 24 knots is actually quite useful. She's going to Colombo to form up with the rest of the RN. Speaking of RN Royal Sov and Revenge are at Derby now, and I think I'm going to keep them covering northern Aus/Timor for a while, assuming the KB gets no closer.

The Desert Rats are on their way as well, not quite there yet but they will be long before the yellow peril arrives.
As its on the railway I figure I can reinforce the place even more if I want, I can always run them back to India if need be. I surely doubt a major assault will be happening on India now with his APs in the area mauled at Java, and a major Java offensive underway. There is another inf div at Calcutta i could use if need be.

Portentous things happen this turn - transports are sighted in the Java Sea, headed for Pontiniak again. They will be in at least Martin range soon, so tomorrow I expect some bombings.
Mandalay gets nicely pasted by Liberators - the heavy bomber contingent of India has been slowly but surely building as the Libs were uncrated. Now the plan is to have the Fortresses bomb while the Liberators rest, and vice versa. The Imperial Guard get visited by 30 Blenheims every day now I've got RAF HQ units in place.
8 Japanese units are sighted on the rail line headed for Homan. Bugger. 8!? thats almost as many as I have Chinese units there, he seems to outnumber the Chins and outclass them at every turn. Bah. Recon suggests the Zeroes have moved out of Mandalay, so I ordered an oil attack on the place with Stilwells heavies. The more supplies I can suck out of Burma the better.
A transport TF is E of Lae, it gets bombed ineffectually by level bombers out of PM. I play with the aircraft there a bit, sadly he's just out of Beaufort range but if he docks at Lae, I'll have him.
This is one of those turns where it crashed on me - it really hates it when I look at the intell screen and my reinforcements, I'm loathe to do it most turns because it seems to kill it half the time - so I had to reboot and then buzz through real quick. In buzzing through I made an error in my haste which I only realised post-emailing - KB is south of Gili Gili, and Repulse is north of Noumea and headed NW - KB might just run into my battlecruiser. [:(] bloody typical. Before Crash I gave that TF orders to go back home again, as it was too risky, but looks like the Supreme Commanders communications were out! heres hoping they survive. Thunderstorms in the area keep grounding the KBs planes so you never know. And he might bomb Port Moresby instead, a blessing in disguise if he does. [:)]
In China he's got designs on Sian, and as per usual he outnumbers me massively again. I'm getting sick of the Chinese getting kicked out of whereever they are holed up almost effortlessly - not to mention being outnumbered all the time, I thought the Chins had the numbers? Recon suggests 14 divs in the south at Hengchow - I've got about 20 in total down there if I scrape the barrel, each one worth about a third of one of his - and he's got 8 + unknown more in the north aiming for Sian, I've got about the same number.
I'm concentrating every spare div I can muster at Kweilin. This abuse has got to stop, the supplies are quite reasonable in the south - bit less so in the east but even there its not too bad, only just in the red. Burma Road looks, touch wood, reasonably secure. In a few weeks I should have about 30 divs there I suppose, then I wanna smack either Wuchow or Hengchow rather than letting him have his way with me all the time.
Any advice on the China theatre would be welcome, at this rate he'll be in Chungking in a couple of months...

Good turn for subs - CA Suzuya catches a fish from a Dutch sub, and an AK catches two fish from a British sub, both between Singapore and Palembang. I'm slowly rotating out the British/Dutch submarines and rotating in US S-boats and fleet subs, as they are really starting to show the wear and tear on the Eurosubs.

Stilwells Heavies arent as fatigued as I thought they would be, so tomorrow they are going after the airbase at Mandalay again, as it's slowly being fixed, and we cant have that. After I've pasted the airfield again I'll switch to bombing the resources I think, every bottle of sake less that the Imperial Guard have the better when they meet the welcoming committee at Jorhat.
Elsewhere quite a lot of action. He makes his first major sortie against Batavia - the airfield gets bombed somewhat but the fighter CAP there manages to put the hurt on his incoming forces, I see a lot of bombers turning back so morale seems low already. The air to air combat animation went on for -ages-, I was impressed at how many the Tomahawks and Warhawks managed to account for. All good experience too.
Swordfish dropped bombs on his AKs in the Java Sea at maximum range and prove they are dangerous even without their torpedoes.
And down at Lae he is unloading while being bombed by Beauforts and Marauders, he wont resupply Lae without casualties thats for sure.
Logistics news - the supply convoys at Brisbane are done. 100k of supplies there now, 70 fighters unloaded and almost entirely uncrated. Not enough aviation support there still though, I need Even More Base Forces. There is a big base force on Luganville put there in error - I'm going to grab that with an AP+DD and take it to Bris. Noumea has 100k of supplies too. Both these major convoys are going back to San Fran either today or tomorrow. While on the subject China has suddenly dipped massively on supply as the Chinese damaged divisions suck up reinforcements from the pool. I set a lot of Chinese divs to not receive reinforcements so it doesnt happen again when I dont want it to.

Elsewhere quite a lot of action. He makes his first major sortie against Batavia - the airfield gets bombed somewhat but the fighter CAP there manages to put the hurt on his incoming forces, I see a lot of bombers turning back so morale seems low already. The air to air combat animation went on for -ages-, I was impressed at how many the Tomahawks and Warhawks managed to account for. All good experience too.
Swordfish dropped bombs on his AKs in the Java Sea at maximum range and prove they are dangerous even without their torpedoes.
And down at Lae he is unloading while being bombed by Beauforts and Marauders, he wont resupply Lae without casualties thats for sure.
Logistics news - the supply convoys at Brisbane are done. 100k of supplies there now, 70 fighters unloaded and almost entirely uncrated. Not enough aviation support there still though, I need Even More Base Forces. There is a big base force on Luganville put there in error - I'm going to grab that with an AP+DD and take it to Bris. Noumea has 100k of supplies too. Both these major convoys are going back to San Fran either today or tomorrow. While on the subject China has suddenly dipped massively on supply as the Chinese damaged divisions suck up reinforcements from the pool. I set a lot of Chinese divs to not receive reinforcements so it doesnt happen again when I dont want it to.

RE: EUB vs Sprior - see who gets his banana straightened
Japanese cruisers bombard Batavia - the runway is on 19 damage, not too bad, but he really makes a mess of the a/c there, if anything the report understates it. My Batavian torpedo bombers are resting this turn so no hurt in the Java Sea, but Beauforts continue to bombard his transport TF unloading at Lae - unfortunately I hit only the PG/MSW escorts and not the transports themselves.
Stillwells Heavies dont take off. Bah. Try again tomorrow.
I'm starting to try various things in China, it'll be a while before they bear fruit. Hard to explain, I'll take a screenie in a few more days when the units leave the bases, a picture is worth a thousand words in this case.
Changes from previous - the torpedo bombers at Batavia are set to kill mode again, and Martins and Fortresses begin night bombing of Palembang - he's got 50 fighters there, way too many for me to try daylight reprisal raids on, I'll just get cut to pieces (see two days ago). I got four heavily damaged (90+ sys) ships at Port Moresby - I cant see the KB anywhere, they are going to try and limp home to Townsville. Fat chance, but if they stay at PM they will surely be sunk, lets at least make an attempt to extricate them. One CL (Hobart) and three DDs.
Poor aviation support at Brisbane impedes my efforts to uncrate those badly needed fighters! Gah.
