Biggest Kiev-pocket ever?

Post by Kuniworth »

Playing against the computer I was able to cut of an enormous amount of russian troops just east of Kiev. This must have been the greatest pocket ever, the whole russians southern front just disappeared and I was able to advance to Stalingrad.

When I finally realised what my troops had acomplished I had to save the game and change to

The result was remarkable. Russians lost to surrender and shattering;

58 rifle divisions(!)
7 Tank corps/mech corps
and some artillery regiments

Well thats a decisive battle to me. Now Im just wondering, anyone pulled something like this off before?

Funny part

The game ended in november 41 with total destruction of the red army. Because Leningrad never surrendered(altough comletly surrounded) I reached Stalingrad, Vologda and all of the railroad to Murmansk captured, Caspian sea reached and panzers in the outskirts Kazan and Saratov. In other words a complete conquest except for Caucasus.

Well now thats a barbarossa for the fuhrer to be proud of!!

My favorite moment in WIR was a reverse Kiev, pulled by my as the Soviets against a person, using the 1.13x version. After barely surviving the first fall with Leningrad falling to the Finns and Moscow attacked by not fallen, I managed to drive through the north and south flanks to the Pripyet marsh and trap at least half the entire German army to the east of it in a massive pocket. Some German units managed to plot out of the trap through the marsh, but the rest were destroyed.

The game was basically over from that point on as the Axis did not have enough men to hold a line afterward. Don't know how the numbers compared to your battle though. Sounds like you had a blast.

Well the thing is just keeping up the advance of the frontline as the AI never really tries to breakout of the pocket. Often the AI holds even some cities far behind my line but I couldnt care less.

This is fine with the AI, but if you think you might be playing with someone who will do anything to win, then do NOT allow bypassed enemy units to be on their own. Gary never really thought through the out-of-supply situation clearly, because there is the bizarre ability of a corps with subunits that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in them from continuing to move one square per turn and the ability to take an undefended city with nothing more than ghosts.

And lets not even start with the problem of a full strength panzer corps taking 30 turns, around 7 *MONTHS*, out of supply and moving every turn, to lose all its forces.

And I didn't even name names, just a generic "game against a person" rather than a "game against the neo-Hitler Don". ;) I would have carried the name of the person to the grave with me, but that was my favorite moment in any WIR game so far. :D

Only when I'm the German player. My current role is as "Neo-Stalin". And I hardly think you would have taken that tidbit to you're grave, you would have shared with Paul Simon.
