The Ardennes, 1945

Post by Hard Sarge »

Major Sarge joins I/JG 2 in March 1945, taking over command of the 2nd Flight of Staffel number 1, flying FW 190 A9's

early morning brif, our orders are to fly Cap and to protect the ground strike

it's zero dark thirty, so plenty of time to check the maps and intel reports

hmm, best way to protect the slow low flyers, is if there are no bad guys in the area, walk over to the hangers and wake up the crew chief, White 9, load some rockets on it for this mornings mission

Rockets for a AS mission ? thats a lot of weight and drag Major, with a glare, I remind the Chief that the russian front needed riflemen

Rockets, Aye Aye sir

the airfield rumbles with the sounds of engines, flares are fired and the planes start to roll

White 9, where the hell are you going, get back here, see you at the target, White 9 out, 10, close it up, latch onto my tail and stay there

best way to protect the low and slow boys, is to make sure no yanks show up

Heavy Flak, lots of Balloons, and plenty of targets, the Yanks were sleeping this morning

steep dive, high speed, nose up and fire the rockets, oh my, lot of carry on them things, aim and fire, all guns, blast and flames, hit the rudder, keep the plane on the runway

Bank and Rudder, keep the plane under control but lined up with the runway, keep the plane low so your rounds got a chance to hit something and the AA gunners can't fire with out fear of hitting there own planes

so much dust, never seen the last two planes I just went past, hopefully I did some damage anyway

Nose up and lets get out of here

400 mph and there is a P47 lumbering in front of your face, fire, he starts to roll and evage, fire again, no chance to follow, strikes all along the wings and onto it's back it goes, too low, too slow, too much out of luck

the first plane up in now in my sights, fire, strikes in wingroot, engine, tail, rolls onto it back and is smoking, quick glance over my shoulder and am shocked at all the AA fire coming my way, roll and head for the stars, I am out of here

out the top of my cockpit, I see the P47 level out and start to fly away, no way, AA or not, my blood is on fire too, roll and dive, heavy strikes up and down the wings and body, and off to the side the plane slides, plowing into the ground

the Yanks are still rolling, gaining alt and are highly upset, shouldn't of went back, now am in range and in sight of the planes in the air, nose down and head to the target area, the rest of the boys should be in place by the time I get there

29 miles full out on the deck, me and my wingman are chased, see smoke up ahead, hear the buzz in the headset,

want some company down there ?

sure, anytime, we just checking out the sights

the yanks that are chasing, are bounced and surprised, it is a slaughter, the yanks are cleared from the skies, and the target to taken out

JG2 gets 12 kills today, 7 of them belong to me, we lose two 190 F8's to flak, High Command is happy, the CO calls me into his office, and lets me know that the Russian front still needs more riflemen

Aye, Aye Sir

Mar 2nd
we are to excourt some He 111s on a bomb strike, we expect heavy Yank fighters over the target

the CO has left orders that nothing fancy is to happen today. with a glare, so arm my plane with Mk 103 cannons and take off with the unit

we join with the bombers and head towards the target, half way there, we get the report of inbound fighters, and break off to engage

Power dive into the first group of 47s, scoreing strikes on 2 of the massive brutes, pull up and am in the middle of the next group, out of the sun, the Stangs dive in

call for help, Split S out from under a 47, only to pick up a 2nd 47, counter roll and Split S again, shake off that 47, only to pick up two more, HARD bank and pull, sharp turn, strikes on my wing, hit flaps and stall, nose goes up and the plane goes into a spin, but both 47s zoom on by

get the nose down and the spin under control, dive to the deck, then zoom back up, catch a 47 locked onto a FW, the FW starts to smoke, but my cannons knock off a wing of my target

tracers fly past my head and I Split S again, pull my nose up, roll and Split again, the 47 loses the contest and tries for the deck, 30 mm shells rip the wings, both planes are diving full speed towards the deck, strikes against the body, the 47 starts to slow down causeing me to start to over shoot, from point blank range, the 47 bursts into flames

my FW pulls up with less then 100 ft to spare, but am able to use my dive speed to regain Alt, a quick scan and nothing in danger range, above me I see two Stangs, this is going to be a HARD intercept

my zoom is almost used up, and my nose is starting to fall over, tap the trigger for my 50s, but see no tracers, let the nose fall a bit more, then tap the Cannon, and am rewarded with a massive explosin

let the nose fall over, roll upright, and am right behind the other Stang, but got no speed to close the range, feel strikes on the wing, quick glace and see large holes in my wing, look over my shoulder but do not see any planes, plane is too slow, feel more strikes and blow the hood and bail out

as I fall towards the earth, still do not see any US planes but the Stang that is running away, think my own AA took me out

8 planes took off today, none land, we lost 5 KIA and 2 WIA, we knocked down 8 planes, our side got 12, the Yanks caught the bombers as they returned to the airfield, 16 planes are lost today

3 Experten are gone, I/JG2 will never be the same again

Mar 3rd
Protect the Jabos, if there is a gap, help out

no Allied planes sighted, so down on the deck we go, trucks, cars, trains, and arty are left in ruins as we fly away

the Jabos worked over the tanks, large colums of tanks are seen

15 trucks and 6 guns are knocked out for me, we suffer no losses for the JG

Mar 4th

B17s are headed in

climb for alt, a large gap in the fighter cover is found and the attack is begun, the early attacks by the first Gruppen to reach the target has left holes left and right in the bomber formation, great work

do a high side diving pass, have to skid right at the end of the dive, but my 20 mm gun pods work well, and strikes are seen from wingtip to wingtip, engines bust into flames

pull HARD into the skid and start to rake the belly of the next 17, roll onto my back to try and keep the target in my sights, flames are shooting out of the engines on the 2nd bomber, finish off the roll and feel strikes in my tail

crud, tail is locked, and can't control the plane, and am still in the middle of the bomber formation and drawing fire, over the side I go

2 kills for me, 16 17s go down

HQ is pleased

more 17s are on the way, load up my Mk 108s for this mission

again the 109s are murder on the head on pass, see 4 bombers going down in flames, 2nd pass looks almost as good, just as I start to close in, see a cripple dropping behind the formation

dive down on the cripple, fire and see fire begin to bellow out the wing, start my pull out and take a couple of rounds into my belly !, use my speed gained in the dive to climb into the rest of the raid

strikes, belly and tail, fire again, hits on the wing, fire, engines begin to smoke, fire, and the wing snaps, the bomber starts to fill my screen, then a blinding flash, as the whole plane goes up in flames

after trying to climb over top of the exploding plane, the next plane in line is out of sight, barrel roll and begin to fire as I roll onto my back, a sheet of flames cross the wing as my 30mm's find the fuel tanks

finish the barrel roll, and start to climb out of the formation and strikes in the tail again, and again the tail is out of my control, let the plane roll onto it back and dive away, at 6000 ft, break the roll and dive and try to level out, no good, can't get the plane under control to land, over the side I go again

5 mission, I have bailed out 3 times, and have landed a crippled plane once, the JG only has 7 planes left to fly

another 17 raid, very high alt this time, with lots of 38's following

take forever to get to alt, but close in at 28 K

(really would like to see the fanboys, explain how great the flight model is in this sim, nothing like doing 200 mph in a high alt plane, what a joke)

pick a target and start my dive, game a few mph and hammer the first 17, try to zoom backout, but am still in the thick of the raid, closing in on the bomber in front of me, but can't get my nose down, so go back to my old trick of barrel rolling, at the top of the roll, fire, 30mm are great and 2 engines burst into flames

finish the barrel and pull back into the formation, start a slow climb and open fire on the next bomber, but am taking fire from all over the box

engine is sputtering as I close in, start my roll and am rewarded with seeing more fire spead out of the 3rd bomber, show my belly to the bombers and head for the deck

dang, them bombers are unsporting, fireing at me on the way down !

400 mph and 1000 ft off the deck, I level off and head for home, the chief is going to be happy this mission, as long as the engine holds, I should be able to land at the base, if the engine fails, I can still put it down in a field, and we can send out a truck to pick up my bird

oh fudgeknuckles, 6 38's turn and give chase, at least they are staying high, wingman gives out the call, Break, devils are diving, look over my shoulder and see the first two starting to close the range, engine is shot, and my cannons are out of ammo, oh well

nose up into a zoom, kill the engine and hit the flaps, speed drops to 200 Mph and over the side I go, and watch as the first 2 38's zoom by, follow a few seconds later by 2 more, guess the last two stayed high to cover there friends

so close to making it home too !

end of day, I scored 2 kills, one of my mates, picked off my last flamer, we knocked down 6 of the bombers, and we are down to 6 planes

another 17 raid, at least, it is a simi low level raid this time, 18 K

climb to 22 K, and close in, get to the middle of the raid and start my dive, good angle, looks like I got 3 or 4 bombers right in my dive path, as long as I don't take any damage, I shouldn't have to do anything fancy

200 feet and 400 mph, fire, left wing snaps off, keep the dive going and line up on the next bomber, roll to the right some and here comes the rounds, strikes to my engine and wing, fuel tank is hit, return fire, left inboard engine hit, body, tail, right inboard, right out board, 2 engines are fire, finish the roll and pull the nose up and the 3rd bomber is in range, belly strikes, bomb bay hit, body snaps in half, roll out of the formation and start to climb, look back over my shoulder and check out the damage

plane is under control, engine still working and still got ammo left, use my speed to gain as much alt as I can and roll back into formation, the bombers pick this time to start there turn, so get a nice attack run into a number of bombers that are almost sideway

close in and fire, and cannons are out of ammo (I hate that) but get good strikes with my MGs, and see both engines on the left wing burst into flames, but am losing speed, and start to take more hits as I fly though the rest of the formation, roll onto my back and dive for home

engine is sputtering, and fuel is leaking, but I am going back to base, 10 clicks from base and I am home, 5 clicks, and oh crap, give me a break, Stangs diving

Engine stops, the plane is out of gas, both Stang pass over head and start to Split S, time to get out

made it with in 4 clicks of the base this time, I am getting closer

get 3 kills this mission, looks like another mate picked off my last flamer !

the JG has 6 planes left

lost my notes for the 8th and 9th of March, know I bailed out 2 more times, and think I got 1 B-17 each mission, last mission I was really bummed, as I had put rounds into 6 B-17s and had all 6 on fire or smoking badly

March 10th
brif is for a cap mission, cross the front lines, fly over the target for today and cap it ?, okay

one of them missions that the flight path goes off the map, so, put it on Otto pilot and let the puter do some work, turn the world black and wait, been flying for some 5 minutes and rejoin the light, and notice that the dang plane is flying the wrong way, the target is like 286 degrees from our airfield, we still flying at 70, take control of the plane and try to turn back, and find out the the AI had pretty much shut off my engine

that was fun, breaking the low level stall and spin, because the AI can't follow a flight path, oh well, get the plane going where it is suppost to be, and start a slow climb

the A-8s and F-8s reach the target area and go to work, see the commander order the planes to attack 4 times, AA makes a mess of them, and then the 51s dive in to attack, and my flight is still off the map, soon I can see the AA fire and hear the screams and orders filling the air

so, we close the range and I order the flight to attack, smoke trails fill the skies, as our jabo have been hit HARD

see two stang down low, chaseing a FW, try to engage but pick up too much speed and can't make the last turn, use my speed and chase another group of stangs off to the side, quick glance and there are stangs all over the place, high, low and level, this could be fun, or short

using my 470 mph to trade some speed for alt, I close the range on 2 stangs I see crossing my path, roll, pull into a sharp turn and then level my wings and I am right behind the 2nd plane, and my speed brings me to point blank range and I tap the trigger, see strikes on the tail, then see the 30mms hit both wings (man I am close) pull up and over the stang I go, his wingleader started a diving turn as soon as I opened fire and I still got too much speed to follow, so pick out another target farther away

the 1st Stang rolls onto it's back and flys into the ground, his leader must of made a pretty fancy move, he is on my tail and only 300 meters away, but he has no speed, and I pull easily away before he can find the range

as I fly off, I see 3 more stangs and they are following me, see one wingman to the side of me and one following the Stangs, if I keep going the way I am headed, it will lead me out of the battle, but may give one or both of my men, an easy shot

my wingman is looking like he is going to be in trouble, the angles are all wrong for him, and the other FW just does not seem to be closing the range, so I do a climbing turn into the Stangs, all 3 of them just put there noses into the sky and fly past me, I am able to roll and join there formation, but am a long way off as I lost almost all of my speed getting into this place to start with

so follow and gain speed, soon I am the faster plane, and close the gap between me and the 3 stang, open fire and see chucks of his tail fly off and soon his engine is hit and the prop stops spinning, yank the nose up and I am just under the other two planes

get in real close, if I do this right, should have a easy pair of kills, 190 meters and tap the trigger, and dang I missed, the 2nd plane starts a sharp climb, pull my nose up and tap the trigger again and am rewarded with a explodeing target, fly though the flames and see the wingleader has started to roll, fire and miss, he counter rolls, fire again, and miss, again he counters his roll, and I fire and again am rewarded with a explosion

head back towards the battle and see a low flying Stang, dive down and another one bites the dust, turn and see 2 chasing a smoking FW, the FW goes down, but so do both of them of

soon, that my flight is all the left in the skies, well, 3 of us at least, at last we get the call to return to base

the chief is overjoyed to see my plane finally touch down in one piece, as the engine starts to die down, he runs over to my plane and yells so I can hear him, "see, I knew you could do it, landing is not so HARD"

my boys got 2 planes today, but we lost one, I got lucky, and claim 8 kills

the Jabo commander is furious, they lost 15 planes today, over all, we took down 11 and lost 16, we can not win the battle with losses like this

my unit only has 6 planes left

with todays score, I now have 29 kills, since the battle started, my name is in the papers, and Gobbels has started to brag about my skills on the radio, I have even started to get some fan mail, silly kids, but the mess tent only has a few tables in use, and the barracks has way too many empty bunks at night, I am the newest Hero of the Fatherland

why do I feel so sad

rain and low clouds, suppost to clear a path for the Jabo that are coming in later, going to be HARD clearing a path though this muck

plane don't seem to want to fly today, feels sluggish, and wants to wobble, finally break though the clouds and get a little sunshine, when the report comes in, 17s on the way in, hurry

this got to be the lowest 17 Raid I have ever seen, no more then 12 K, clouds and rains must be giveing them trouble too

see other fighters are already in the attack, so hold my flight back, while we try and gain a little more alt and level speed

start my dive after giving the order to attack, close the range and open fire, and am rewarded with heavy smoke pouring out of two engines, fly past and see another bomber lumbering into my path, nose down a little and then open fire

Strikes, all over the left wing, both engine burst into flames and the bomber is rolling onto it's back as I zoom past, almost to the outside of the formation and see I may get another shot in before I run away, got more speed then I need and the plane is HARD to control, it don't want to get its nose down, so start a skid and then roll onto my back and pull back towards the formation

fire as soon as the bomber fills my screen, and see both engines on the right wing start to burn, finish off my roll so it takes me to the outside again and start to climb, look back over my shoulder and see 2 of the huge bombers rolling onto there backs with a wing blazing, and the first bomber is starting to fall out of formation

by the time I am able to level off again, I am up to 18 K, and doing about 170 MPH, bank back towards the bombers and lose even more speed, by the time I get into postion, I am only pushing 140 mph

start my next dive and get some of my speed back, line up and spray 20mm shells into the wingroots of another bomber, and see the fuel tank start to burn, pull up the nose and zoom past the crippled bomber and am right on top of another bomber, I can see the gunners as they fire at me and I fire back at them, 6 20mm, do a lot of damage to planes and bodies, and this time is no different, I see smoke trailing from 2 engines and seen at least 2 of the gunners slump to the floor of there plane

then the top gunner earns his pay as he plants 50 cal rounds all across the rear of my plane, and again I lose control of my tail area, I dive a bit to see if I still have control, seems to have a little control to the right, but almost nothing to the left, nose starts to come up, lets see if I can roll, if so, I can try and line up with a single bomber

between fighting with the rudder and trying to see if I can control the plane in a roll, I fly right back into the belly of the raid, and the gunners are happy to see my wollowing bird, and begin using it as target practice

I fight the plane back into a Split S, but am too late, a 50 cal round passes though my body, and I am out of the fight

blow the hood, and try to hold back the blood, I bail out for the last time, by reflex or luck, the chute opens, and I only have a short time to hang there floating in the air that I have grown to love, and in a daze, I am able to watch the battle going on all around me, as if it were being preformed just for me

I land and am taken to a hosp, the Docs do what they can, but I will not fly again, at least not in this war

the CO drops in during the night, tells me my wingman was able to bail out and was wounded, my other section leader was not as lucky, and was killed when his plane crashed in flames, 4 of us went up, only 1 came back down and was able to land his plane, but we got 6 bombers, 3 of them I am able to claim

32 kills, I end the war with, and for a little while, I was a hero, one of golden knights of the sky
