My main worry Wobb is that he goes West. East I think I can stop him unless he brings all 10 divisions in one mass.
Lavarack will have 5 Divisions to stop him with more coming by sea from New Cal and Suva.
I decided to send (if I do) armour because I get heavies from the US in late 42 and i have plenty of Mediums to hit him with from the East coast bases.
(My main advantage over your juggernaght wobb is the date) it is now August 42 in 7 weeks I get Lightnings and I already have Spitfires in India.
I will avoid Bombardments by not defending in coast hexes its just to difficult. Unfortunatly my CV's are not upgraded so I am holding them out of the fight for now.
I think this is it he has 200k at Mandalay with 10 Diviisons in Australia he cannot have much more left. India is a fortress thanks in part to Wobb unfortunately I was a tad lazy in Australia and am now going to pay for it !!

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
I don't think you have to worry about the West Coast too much mate. If he takes Perth what does he achieve? Stopping US commitment to India - which as you state - is now a fortress.
Fight for Perth if he goes that way but no need to loose to much sleep.

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
Bombardments Hurt and he destroys my AF in north Australia.
Intel reports he is going East. 9 Divisions + identified on the road to Darwin 60 Miles EAST of Wyndham.
I have a Bn sized force of Dutch/Philipine Solddiers digging in and creating Sherman hairpins to try and slow the advance.
I dont think enough of Lavaracks force will get to the junction ahead of the juggernaugt.
The 3rd Aus Div from Darwin and 1 US RCT are digging in now and will be reinforced by at least 1 Philipine Scout Cavalry Regt but the heavy forces of 1st Marines and 6th Aus Divisons are making heavy weather of movement and are still 700+ miles away.
Its a horserace that I dont think I can win.
In which case my decision is do I abandon Darwin or try to hold it I detest abandoning lvl 9 fort but I dont see that I have much choice being trapped in there would be a deathtrap.
Going to make the decison over the next few days.
Spotted KB off of Timor last turn I decided not to send reinforcements from India or to use my US CV's to intercept the landing it would just be sending good money after bad !!

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
Holy Moly. THis is surely the main event 226 Betties! Wow!
Forts are piles of Dirt mate. Leave them be. Get the breathing soldiers out of town and back into a position where he has to extend himself to come after you. Use the awful movement rules to your own advantage and make him attack a unit that retreat from each hex to the next. This should allow you to retreat faster than he advances.
So he is after the East Coast - especially if he gets Darwin easily. Start gathering the forces.
You can loose alot of points for getting men captured. Try and retreat them in good order. You have been outmanouvered but not defeated - live to fight another day.

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
Aye I unfortunately agree Darwin is a sink I am going to pull back I have already stopped the 4 CD units that I had sent to Darwin. I figure 155mm coast guns and 6" CD guns will be pretty usefull in supporting my eventual inland stand.
Darwin is more or less going to be abandoned unless Lavarack gets 4 Divisions or equivalent in a blocking postion beforehe advances.
I am intending on destroying as much of the rail line as I can as I withdraw (to approximate this little units are digging in on every rail hex to force him to attack and use supplies to force a way through.
(im just glad he didnt try to finish Derby 1st 300k supplies stockpiled there I am actually considering If I can get 4 or 5 Divions to Derby (I already have 3 there) then thats a threat to his rear that he has to honour !!!.

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
At Derby thats what I have at mo
5th Australian Division (100/100)
7th Australian Division (75/75)
C Bde 24th US Division (84/86)
A Bde 3rd NZ Division (50/50)
3rd Australian Bde (50/52)
30th Australian Bde (36/42)
Plus One mixed Bn of Dutch and Phillipine troops in small company sized formations
Armour
2nd Aus Tank Regt (98/100) Honeys
192nd USA Tank Bn (85/86) Stuarts
Artillary
101st AT Regt (50/80)
Sarewak force (9/10 effectivenes)
(total AV 1100 of 1st ABDA Corps)
Plus 13th Bde on way from Perth and potentially 2 NZ Bdes and the Hobart Bde plus 2nd Aus Division all heading either to Derby or Perth.
Now thats a lot of firepower in need of a spearhead.
If I could get 3 UK Art Regts and say 1 or 2 Armoured Bdes to Perth then that becomes a fairly powerfull force requiring thre IJA to split its fighting power.
Australia is really a bad place to invade I got to many units out of Java at the end to make it easy and because I was at one point considering reinforcing Java with 7th Aus and 5th Aus Div they were postitioned in the North making his job a lot harder.
As I am not intending an offensive from India in 42 or even really in 43 I may take 3rd Indian Corps and divert it to Australia.
This will require my 3 CV TF at Perth to act as close escort but it could be worth it as it will allow me to not rush reinforcements from the US but to build up a strike force in Pearl/ Suva with the intnention of taking Tarawa and Wake in late 42.
The alternative is to hold my Indian forces in India and reinfoce Australia from the US and try an invasion of either Rangoon or Malaya in early 43 by the British reinforced by US forces after I stabilise Australia.
Having 10 Divisions committed to a long campaign in Australia may be a terrible move for the IJA in late 42/ early 43 as it takes away the ready reserve required to cover key areas in the event of a full scale Allied invasion.

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
I agree with wobbly. You can't wait for some days to decide to leave Darwin or not. If you don't leave it immediatly, you units will be cut by Wyndham forces. So either you move south immediatly or you don't move at all. But you have to decide now.
RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
Decisions decisions....
I have already ordered 3rd Aus Divison and the US RCT south so all that is left are a few base forces and CD units and the Darwin Defence Bde.
I have evacced all the heavy bombers as bombardments make the place useless. ( I lost 100 aircraft on the ground last turn).
I just dont know.
I want to make him have to assault the place but not lose anything vital.
Every day I delay him Lavarack gets closer and stronger.
I may write off the Darwin Bde and hold them in the city to force an assault in strength.

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
Dear humbugged Andy [;)] ,
which steps have you planned to stop him by moving his transports around the globe ?
I mean, if you cannot stop him at land ( my guess ) at the moment, why not going for his ships.
Can you please post a sunk ships list ? I mean, if you stop his ability to move around his army with transports, the mayhem eill end becasue he cannot move anymore. just a guess, but thats I would approach it. How many AP's AK's DD's CL's CA's CV's are sunk ?
I give you my numbers : 2 CV's 4 CL's 15 DD's 1 CA 12 SS's about 20 PG's PC's and PT's about 60 - 70 transports ( AK's & AP's )
is this good or bad ?
And I think he uses always massive forces which leaves the impression to me that he is vulnearble for an attack at other locations
just my guesses & general strategies, I am not a land combat expert.

3 RN BB's and 1 BC (2 R Class and POW) for 3 IJN BB's
11 CA/CL and CLAA's for 1 CA
6 Allied DD's for 15 IJN DD's
160 AK/AP's v 60 IJN AK/AP's

Lavarack is now 690 miles from the road junction and is advancing as fast as he can.

The north Australian defence force is getting into position quickly.
The 1st USMC has moved like greased bloody lightning 480 miles from the junction and moving fast....

RE: Humbugged - Sveint v Andy Mac the Battle of Northern Australia
OK last two days have been very interesting.
Sveint to be blunt has been dwaddling on his thrust West I could not figure out why he wasnt shock attacking and pursuing to clear out my small delaying forces.
He could have advanced so much quicker and beaten Lavarack to the junction with ease. But in the last two days the penny has dropped.
Sveint is playing it clever.
He has shifted his thrust and has moved 7 Divisions West. They just cleared a small blocking force from 60 miles West of Wyndham and I figure he will be advancing on Derby.
Now this thrust is more serious as I had 300k of supplies stockpiled at Derby and I have no way to evac them.
That means my 3.5 divisions on the Derby front need to try and hold on.
I am going to try and and hold a position 120 miles east of Derby where he cannot bombard me.
In addition having figured I was evaccing Darwin he has launched a seabourne invasion.
I aint that bothered about that one actually as the biggest danger I faced was if lavarack was defeated in detail that his Army would retreat to Darwin and be bottled up.
At least if Lavarack loses he will retreat south and Darwin has minimal supplies to be captured.
Lavarack is 10 days from the road junction (1st USMC will be there in 7 days)
At the point that my blocking force is in place I will consider retaining Darwin.

Coup de Main at Darwin
Bugger !!!
In a classic Coup de Main Sveint has captured Darwin intact.
It was expected the thing I forgot was that it had been built to level 9 forts that is a major mistake.
That is going to be very painful for lavarack to retake.
As a direct result of this I am moving 1 US FA Regt from New Cal and 1 from PM as I will need more heavy metal to retake those forts.
I will also need some Engineers.

RE: Coup de Main at Darwin
OK now he has 20,000 men at Darwin, 20,000 moving east from Wyndham (slowly) and about 80,000 heading East towards Derby.
This is nuts.
Lavarack will be in position to attack never mind defend in 9 days or less.
1st USMC have broken the speed of sound in moving north and are now only 250 miles from the junction with the rest of the army close behind.
I will have a force of 6 Divisions ready to move West or North very quickly.
I am now wondering if the oh so clever Sveint has a deeper plan.
General Van Den Bosch (KNIL) and his 2nd (ABDA) Corps HQ with the equivalnet of 3.5 Divisions has to try and slow down the IJA attack heading West and will be reinforced by the composite NZ Div unloading at Perth now (1st/ 5th Inf and a NZ Cav Bde) and the 2nd Aus Div now moving to Perth
Lt General Roosevelt's 4th (PI/US) Corps will be responsible for retaking Darwin after sufficient strength has been brought up.
Lt General Lavarack's 1st Aus Army will take overall command in theatre as of 1200 hours tomorrow and will take personal command of the offensive to retake Derby.
My only worry is that 4th (PI/US) Corps will not be ready to attack for 10 days and will be short of artillary and engineers to overcome the lvl 9 forts at Darwin.
I have decided to not commit forces from India as I dont think I need to I will save it and use it for a 43 offensive.

Oh and PT boats while powerfull are no match for properly constituted light fleet screening TF's
I sent in 2 gps of PT boats and the IJN light CL/DD TF's wiped the floor with them keeping them well away from the Battlewagons.
Very Very nice move by Sveint

RE: Coup de Main at Darwin
Forts are destroyed when a city is taken, even undefended. So Japanese have 0 forts in Darwin and have no thousands of bulldozers to build them quickly.
It seems to me that you will repulse this attack in some weeks.
RE: Coup de Main at Darwin
Hmmm I am now gettign very very suspicious thta I have been suckered.
2nd day in a row that Sveint hasn't pushed on.
I seem to have lost sight of 3 Divisions as well.
I have 7 ish Divisons concentrating on that rail junction in the east I may have over reacted and stripped the east coast to much. I think the US Division coming in from New Cal will be held in the east coast and the 2nd Aus Div that was heading for Perth will stop and head back to garrison the south. The wily IJA commander has me worried that he is up to something sneaky
I mibee over reacted and stripped to much out !!!.
I am also moving a heavy surface action TF with two BB's towards Brisbane but they are slow...
