Question about AI agressivity

Post by Pocus »

I wonder if the AI agressivity can be toned down a bit. I have regularly examples of the AI making too bold a move, which result in her having his units destroyed:

- several attacks of the WA fleet, with only 2-3 ships against the whole italian navy.
- germany sending his un-upgraded SUB staying in the atlantic, and being sunk each time by the zealous DDs of the British (I wonder how the AI can think that a 2-evade uboot can live one turn in sea).
- 2-3 Italien milicias staying in Egypt where as in Cairo there is half a dozen Brits infantries ... who rejoyces and kill asap the offenders.

and so on. Perhaps the AI should be less liberal with his troops? Stay grouped! hold the line! if you are riding in a green field, with the sun in your face ... err wrong movie![8|]

Gary has continued to tinker with the AI, and there will be improvements made over time. In some ways we'd rather the computer be too aggressive than not aggressive enough, especially since we think the game should be played at the Hard level against the AI (once the player is used to the game). The first patch we are working on already has an improvement in the AI's activity at sea which might improve the fleet issues in the Med that you mentioned. He's also working on U-boat tactics. As for the Italian militia issue, if you've got a save showing the poor strategy that would help us (it needs to be a save we can load and run a turn and watch the AI making a specific bad move). Send the saves to 2by3@2by3games.com. We're quite willing to try to make improvements in the AI if we can identify some specific things it can do to play better. Thanks for the feedback.

ok, I will reload my autosaves and tell you.

By the way I must confess that there is a thing I dont quite like in you difficulties level: the "absolute" supply advantage (meaning the same for each nation for a given diff.). Even at challenging it basically means that the Soviets swim in supply. Perhaps something like adding 1 time the factory output in supply for each diff level would be more "logical"?

yes I know I can enter my own values [&o] sorry for the remark [;)]

I like using Custom AI settings to produce the challenge I want. See my Japan AAR - I didn't want the Chinese to be titans due to the massed supply, and I wanted a robust Germany. You can do a lot of tweaking like this.

Basically, at the higher difficulty levels, the AI will attempt more complex strategies, but only if you give it the supply help it needs to execute them.

what what what, are you saying that some more complex AI algorithms kick in in higher levels (as in GalCiv to give the only example of this behavior I know of)?

There are some strategies that the computer will use at high difficulty levels that it won't attempt at lower levels. It's not that the computer is "smarter", it's just that it has a few more overall strategies it's willing to try since it has more to work with.
