World at War on Console?
Just curious what others think about this idea.
Once World at War has been out a while to iron out all the kinks and bugs in the game, would fellow gamers like to see World at War ported over to the consoles like PS2 and X-Box?
I personally think it would be great to be able to play a WW2 stratgey game of this type on a big screen TV and go head-to-head with other gamers...
This game could become a real cash cow for Matrix...
It might even spur other turn-based strategy games being done for the consoles...
Any thoughts?

Please, after all the complaining and beating of breasts that Matrix was turning to the devil by taking on a RTS game, do we really need the moaning and gnashing of teeth because Matrix is now going to abandon PC gaming for consoles?
That said, I don't think the market for this game exists on consoles. Too many fighting/racing games to compete with

RE: World at War on Console?
Well i'm new to Matrix games, and I haven't played any of their games yet. (I have downloaded the game today onto CD and can't wait to get home to play it). But generally I think games like this don't port at all well over to consoles.
I remember Civilization came out on the PS1 and although it was good, it wasn't close to the PC version, the very nature of consoles don't lend themselves to statistics, menu navigation and mouse intrices.
Also the console market is a lot different to the PC market, If big PC games like Total War haven't made the switch then I don't think Matrix games which seem to have a dedicated market but are not really seen in the retail sector as much will be able to carry out the transisition.
People buy PC's for this type of game genre and people buy consoles for other reasons and other genres.
Generally I don't think the major stereo-typical genres for the system crossover to the other platform too well.

I could see there being a market for a game like WaW on Xbox live. Waw itself might not be a great choice since it seems built for PBEM instead of network play. However, if someone made a game similiar in feel to WaW but with a WEGO system to lessen downtime, it might have a shot.
I think that the real barrier lies with funding. The expenses associated with publishing an Xbox game are probably of an order of magnitude higher then your typical Matrix release.

Hmmm...
I think certain games tend to work well on consoles...
I remember getting Panzer General 1 for the Playstation and played it for months on end...
And does porting one or two games over to console really mean abandoning PC gaming?
Or can it mean that a gaming company is able to offer something to everybody...?
WaW just might be the game that could bring Matrix more game recognition to a wider audience...
And if it sells in sufficient quantities, it could very well be a cash cow that would allow Matrix to put more money into creating more specific in-depth War strategy games...
Surely, even the RTS crowd is getting tired of all the shallow click-fest console games out there?
Sometimes it takes a trend-setter to alter company/gamers game perceptions.
I rememeber not too long ago that BIG WW2 strategy games could rarely be found...
And now... many of them are being produced...

You could always just go and buy a data projector. Then you can play it as big as you want on the wall where you keep your computer. (Or anywhere if you have a laptop)

More and more DLP and Plasma TVs come with digital PC input connections so you can plug them into a PC and use them as a minitor. You are usally stuck witht 180 x whatever pixel count of teh HDTV spec, but I was in BEst But a while agoa and they had Farcry playing form a PC on a 50 in Samsung DLP with Bose audio and it drew quite a crowd.

RE: World at War on Console?
Personally I’ll be happy if wargames were on some kind of a consol, to me it would be no more worrying about if I have enough RAM, video, and virtually memory. No more conflicting software that screw up my games. No more upgrading every year, just to play a game. Of course consoles will most defiantly need some kind of email system and wargamers room and maybe a keyboard for the BS that everyone loves. And also a printer hookup to print stuff out. Yes…I know it’s going to be years down the road before something like this happens.
The main two reasons why I feel this way right now is because
1. Consol strategy games like Romance of The Three Kingdoms, Genghis Khan, and Bandit Kings of Ancient China were the games that started me into war/strategy gaming in the first place. And I know if it can get me started then it can get a whole lot of others started to.
2. I gave up looking for GGWaW and decided to download it. You just can’t find any wargames at all in the retail stores anymore. Basically you can't find hardy any computers games at all these days. I get about 90% of my computer games online now. Which means that if your not into hardcore computer wargaming your most likely not going to know about all the games that are out there right now.
When I started wargaming I was about 18 to 20 years old. I'll like to know how many people on these forms are in there early twenty's or late teens.

I remember trying to play Panzer Generals on PS1 and it was clunky and not fun. I imagine if you owned the extremely rare PS2 mouse it would be more workable. That being said, I really enjoyed Dynasty Tactics (PS2) and Risk (PS1).

My thought is that's a stupid idea. unless it's bundled with a mouse.

Well, I think it would all be about designing an intuitive interface for the console handset. Don't you think?
And you can get a mouse for consoles now...

Err... I'm 16?
Just started playing, I thought I'd wouldn't have too much of a problem adjusting since I play Axis and Allies alot, god i was wrong.
I don't think console would work, most of the games bought on consoles now are fps's sports game or movie title cash-ins.

That's what I mean:
It's the same old, same old...
Even click-fest gamers are getting tired of the same games coming out on the consoles...
However, should a company put out a different game on the console, others will jump on the band wagon...
Heck, UBIsoft just announced a return to the Might and Magic games (HoM&M 5 - turn-based mind you) because its popular.

RE: World at War on Console?
My big question is how you would get it developed. The console market is very expensive to get into. You can't just make a game for it like you can on the PC. You have to be an approved developer, buy a development kit, and have a business plan that shows your game will be a "big hit" or the console companies won't even let you sell it. There is a reason there are very few niche console games.

Thoughtful questions.
However, there is a reason why the Axis and Allies board games continue to sell despite us being well into the computer age. Even the A&A computer game is going strong through the use of PBEM.
Do a Google of Axis and Allies and you will find hundreds of websites devoted to that game alone with a ton of variations...
WaW could very well dethrone A&A as the defacto WW2 strategy game...
From 12 to 70 year olds, everyone likes a good, intuitive, easy to play, but hard to master turn-based WW2 strategy game...
There are millions of consoles; there are tons of sports games; there are tons of FPS; and there are tons of these games that have been returned/traded in; but there are currently NO grand turn-based WW2 strategy games for the console...
Show any teenager a screenshot of WaW I'll bet they will want to play the game.
I once showed a 5 year old my boad game of A&A and he immediately opened the box and started to play with the counters and military pieces (even though he had never seen that game before and had no clue as to how to play the game)...
I'll bet when Matrix first started, people were at first surprised that this company was going to put out wargames...
And look at them now...

RE: World at War on Console?
I remember when people said that FPS would never work on a console because you could never get the same movement and accuracy that you can get with a keyboard and a mouse. Now look at all the FPS on the console these days, because of the success of Halo. The same thing could happen to turn base strategy games. Last month I went looking for a new graphics card but decided not to get one because of the price, it was way to much. For the price of a new card (around 300$ ) I could get a new console and still have enough money (150$ for Matrix if their games are on a console ) to buy games with. Someone is going to have to give it a try one of these days and instead of saying it wont work… make it work.
PC games retail sales are declining not rising. It's only a matter of time before PC games will not be in the retail stores anymore. I was really surprise of how small the PC games selection was at EB, Gamestop, and Best Buy. And I didn’t see anyone looking or buying a PC game, ( probably because of how small the PC section is) but there was a lot of people buying console games. With the system requirements rising for games and upgrading costing so much, PC games sales are just going to keep on getting smaller and smaller. I know that I’m not… going to go out and buy a new PC or a new graphic card or more RAM to make my PC a gaming PC to last just one more year and then have to do it all over again. That has to stop. And all I know is that if my 1.6 Ghz, 768 MB of RAM can not run it decently then I’m not getting it. And the way things are going that should be in about a year or so before that happens. Anyways... I will not buy a FPS on the PC anymore. I think Matrix going to DD is a very smart move and hopefully GGWaW at retail will get Matrix some more attention in the general gaming community. Otherwise the strategy/wargaming community will just keep on getting smaller and smaller as the years go by.
End of Rant..
