Torpedo and Ship vs. Ship

Post by JosephL »

Heya everyone, I am actually going to post a question rather than answer one :-)

My brother-in-law brought this to my attention, and I figured since i didn't know the answer and we couldn't figure it out exactly, others would probably wonder the same thing:

Obviously Ship Combat in research is attack vs. naval vessels (non-subs) and sub combat is attack vs subs.

What the heck is Torpedo? When is it used and what is it used for?

-Joe

PS: After three tries, my brother in law playing Germany and I playing Japan we are still yet to defeat the AI on Normal difficulty. We won't give up! We managed to almost destroy russia last time, but the Italian Invasion was coming and the partisans were growing restless and I made a blunder with Japan's navy.

Cool story behind that: I decided rather than a pearl harbor "hope to cripple them" strategy I would focus on building a navy and take the pacific fleet head on. It almost worked, with a 68% chance of victory: Huge naval battle, my 8 battleships and 4 carriers against the Pacific Fleet.... but I lost (I'm not playing roulette) and my entire fleet was destroyed because they could not flee. DOH (I still crippled their ships)

The torpedo values for ships is used in ship to ship torpedoing(sp?). If you watch the battle screen sometimes you'll see a torpedo leave a fleet unit and head towards the unit it just fired at with it's guns. This is most noticable for light Jap fleets.

but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

It is a units Torpedo attack rating... [:D]

Subs use this when attacking ships

Destroyers use this as well as Ship Attack ( ie. They get two attacks in battle ).

Planes ( that have the capability ) use this as well when attacking ships. ex. Carrier air gets two attacks.

Hope that helps

If you watch the battles, you will better see what happens. The torpedos fire off from light fleets at range 1 (or 2, I don't remember). So if a fleet gets into battle at range 3, you won't see torps (or light ships guns) fire off at all.
