Memory leak????

Post by jonpfl »

All,

I was wondering if anyone else is getting a warning from XP because of virtual
memory running out? I have a few things running in the background but nothing
that would chew up alot of memory.

I loaded up the game and did a few turns and then went to do some things around
the house and I alt-tabbed out of the game and there was a virtual memory warning.

Just curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing

Thx

Haven't seen that, but it's a good idea to shut down any background programs if you are seeing any problems. Also, check the FAQ in the support forum for info on known bugs that we're addressing in the upcoming post-release update.

I had that problem but what you can do (besides shutting down all background apps.) is increase your virtual memory so more of your hard drive is used for that purpose:

MyComputer/View System Information/Advanced Tab/Performance Settings/Advanced Tab/Virtual Memory/Change button

Hope this helps..........

I had that come up on my laptop my disk is pretty full, but once it thrashed a bit, I never got it again.

I'll bet you have 512MB of Ram and a disk that has less than 10GB left?

I had that message upon exiting a game but not while it was running.

(also have a 256 MB Video card for graphics)

COuld be you just had a low virtual memory config for some reason. Once it reconfigures itself you should be fine.

I am experiencing the same problem. I hear the hard drive working hard during gameplay, and switching between the screens is very slow. It takes the PC several seconds to build up the new screen. When I exit GGWaW, Windows XP gives a virtual memory warning too.

My system is a Windows XP, AMD Athlon 2600+, 512 Mb Memory and a 120 Gb (25 Gb left) hard drive, which should be more than sufficient. I have set the virtual memory to 2 Gb, but that does not help either. BTW, this is the only game which gives this problem.

Can anyone give more tips to make the game run faster, cause this can get annoying after a while.

I do like the game itself a lot!!!!!!

Perhaps defragging your hardrive will help. This is a recommended maintenance action anyway. Every few weeks / months depending on how muchyou use your PC you should have it defrag the HD.

I found on my "memory challenged" machines that turning the combat anaimation delay to 0 (turning them off) hlelped a LOT with performance.

While extreme - rebuilding my laptop did wonders (not just for this game - but performance in general seems to to have impoved at least 25-30%

I'm sure all of that is true, however I have noticed that after two or three hour sessions, the game definitely lags a bit... scrolling the map by moving the mouse I start to see hiccups and jitters that weren't there an hour before... and it's not my eyes, (<grin>), I got up and walked for an hour or so and returned just to make sure... great game here!

It might be something to look for anyway, there does seem to be something causing the system complain..

Everyone who has posted about memory/performance issues in this thread, I can't emphasize this enough...

Please try the low graphics (16 bit) setting. Change it in the game options, exit the game and start it up again for it to take effect. You should notice a significant memory use and performance improvement. Recell that the most important elements for this title are System Memory and Video Memory, so if you are near the minimum requirements on either of those, it's worth trying the 16 bit graphics mode to see if it helps.

I experienced the same problems.
I have one 1GB of ram and a superfast video card, anyway sometimes it happens that the game eats too many resources.

This is obviously an anomaly, not the game's normal behavoir, as 90% of the times this problem doesn't occur. I cant understand why and when it happens, anyway it sometimes does happen.

I will check the memory leak issue in the next day or two when i have a chance (loaded up at work) I have become adept at finding these. I do know that some software code when written has a bad habit of not releasing memory for graphics once it is not needed (animations ect..).

after playing for 5 hrs last night, i did have hd whirring a lot, which slowed the game, and then i crashed due to the 64 unit thing, my computer had 1140M committed which is a lot more than i've seen from any game (my RAM is 768MB)

I take no responsibility if you run into issues using these since they are microsofts tools not mine.

I did 6-7 hours last night and everything runs fine, in fact i am experimenting with the preferences because the ai units fly across the map at default settings. I had to laugh when a Japanese TF "flashed" across the screen before the battle started[X(]. i can see from the quality of animations and effects that it doesn't hurt to have a powerful PC, there is alot going on at once.

Just to reiterate for comparison, when I run this on an older 512Mb machine without setting graphics to "Low", it performs MUCH worse, with plenty of delays and disk activity. When I set graphics to "Low", it performs great and is wonderful to play. Note that the default setting is to have the graphics set to "High" so if you are seeing any performance issues, try the other setting and let us know if it helps. In testing, it made a huge difference for lower spec systems.
