Rationale for Factory Movement

Post by Rik81 »

I realize doing this (factory movement) is very restrictive, and supply expensive. I am just curious as to the rationale behind even having the ability to move factories? Is there historical precedence for this?

Yes. The massive Soviet effort to relocate factory production from the front lines to the Urals. I can give you details later.

A quick summary can be found in Glantz's "When Titans Clashed: How the Red Army Stopped Hitler", which is essential reading for the East Front buff. A more detailed description can be found in Erickson's "The Road to Stalingrad", but that book can be tough sledding at times.

...and regarding the Soviets and gameplay, if the Germans do not take your frontline factories on the invasion turn, it is a good idea to move them asap, as you will need their production for the long term and they are cheaper to repair than build anew.....

Yep. Very likely the only time factory movement will get used is to save Soviet production and send it East to the Urals. In my current PBEM gold game, Barth failed to take the Kiev & Belorussia factories, so I got those out. Of course, I knuckleheaded the Leningrad defense, so he got that one.

[X(][X(] Moving Chinese factories, that's just crazee [:D]. To get them back to full production he'll have to repair them, it'll suck his very limited supply like there's no tomorow.

This isn't exactly a CHINA thread, but since I didn't start it [:D] I can go ahead and ask:

I decided to play as China in my first game. Only 2 turns so far, so ...! But I am wondering (caused by seeing all that Red in my land and growing, what happens game wise, if all of China is conquered, does the game just continue with the computer doing its thing with the other 4 powers?

IIRC yes, if you get all your factories ocupied by Japan, the game goes on teh chance you get liberated and can rejoin the fight.
