Patch 1.1 requests

Gary Grigsby's World At War gives you the chance to really run a world war. History is yours to write and things may turn out differently. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances. Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of. Now anything is possible in this new strategic offering from Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games.

Patch 1.1 requests

Post by solops »

After a couple of hours of play I must say that 2x3 and Matrix have a good and interesting product. I ran into two things almost immediately that I would like to see modified:

1. The Neutrals color is too close to the same as Germany's. I'd like to see more color differentiation between ALL of the countries.

2. What phase are we in, Movement or Production? Somewhere there should be a note about this or an indicator. If there is one already, I missed it.

These are both minor cosmetic fixes that I think would add to the game and would not require much effort. With luck, others will have better suggestions as time goes on.

Pretty good looking effort, guys. And the manual is a delight after suffering through some other poor offerings recently.

1. Germany is grey. Neutrals are whitish. I think what is happening must be that you attack a neutral as one of the Allied powers. At that point, control of that territory switches to Germany, so it turns grey (unless you take the territory, in which case it's your color).

2. The indicator for phase is in the top left corner. Arrows for movement, cogs for production.

Glad you like the game. You can modify the color yourself by going into the art.txt file in the dat directory. The next to the last few lines in the file have the colors for the different players (including neutral). You can play around with these colors by just changing the values and saving the file. You probably need some kind of art program (I used Adobe Photoshop Elements) to get the color values for what you want. Maybe an artist out there help you. I see there are two numbers in the file for each player. IIRC the first is the normal color and the second is the frozen color. Be sure to rename the original file so you still have it in case you want to go back to it. Also, leave the ,0 and ,1 at the end of the two UN lines as one is for British and the other is for US colors.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Download "Smart Color" ( http://www.isotton.com/smartcolor ) , it´s free. I use it a lot.

In the next patch I would like you to change the autosave to save at the end of each movement and production phase, rather than at the beginning of each turn.

I have also a request for the next patch:

Please make it possible that you can zoom and unzoom the map with the mouse wheel!

Thanks.

Some more chrome: units names. Totally cosmetic I know, but I like to know I manipulate the Soviet 14th Shock army and not a nameless sprite.

For things not cosmetic-related, I think the devs have their own agendas...

If you can keep those armies alive for any length of time, more power to you. The way I go through units, I would have run out of names by the end of 1942.

just lost my first panzerkorps (tank unit) as the german in fall 44. They are often hit, but it is very rare to loose one.

It reminds me, I ask also for experience [:D] My 7 tanks units from the start are still alive, 4 years after. They should have some bonuses [:'(]

Discussed during alpha testing, but ultimately not something that could be implemented. I'm with you though, if 2by3 ever revisits the game with a sequel, naming my armies & adding elite units are the two things on my wish list.

I think that the land movement between 2 regions separated by a double-line is too easy, moving a unit across a double line should cost 2 supply, not only one. else it's way too easy to invade Siberia (for example)

More chrome - the "unit is already here" text that pops up every time you click on a unit. In fact all the text similar to this - "illegal move" etc - be nice to have option to be able to turn this off as it doesn't seem necessary.

The screen is very busy with pop ups, for me it would look better if all this info was presented in the same place on the right hand side of the screen in a semi transparent box.

Minor stuff though - great game!

ah, now I remember, an interface improvement: I would like to be able to move my supply by stacks of 5 (CTRL key, why not), as I generally optimize my railroad usage when on the east front.

I would like a way to turn off all ai-to-ai combat movies but I still want to see them for me unless there is already some way to do that.

I would like to see a way using the stack function to select something less than all the units in a particular region.

Ideally, I would like to be able to "shift" and select all the units of my choosing and create an army or army group, fleet(air or naval) unit. This BG(battlegroup) would then be seen in the unit display as one unit, with a Nato symbol for the group size and then I would designate a commander to this group. I could then move, tactically or strategically, this entire group and force combat just as if it were one unit.

Anytime I would hover my mouse pointer over that Battlegrouping I would see a detailed distribution of what was in that group, supplies, units, perhaps combat values displayed just as it works when hovering over the unit icon in a region.

One more. I want to be able to research "speed" for my infantry so that it can use extended movement, ie. motorize, and keep up with my armor.

Well come to think of it, why not artillery and AA too.

I mean there were self-propelled varieties of each.

dunno, one can consider that armored units embed already infantries, and that the infantries you have are of the footed sort. This would be a major change in gameplay and everybody would want his infantry to speed 2 asap (or you would have to increase 2 to 3 times the cost of the upgrade, and nobody would take it).
